Mozilla/Firefox

How many Canadians are using this web browser? http://www.mozilla.org/

I was just looking at the Canadian Conversation forum at Gardenweb and noticed that many are pleased with it. I've also been following Gardenwife's threads and have been tempted to try it but am a little nervous that something might go wrong and it will mess up my computer.

Cochrane, ON(Zone 2b)

Hi Lilypon. I have been using the Firefox browser & Thunderbird email for about 6 mo now & I am very satisfied. Haven't had a single problem with either one of them. Whenever there are updates to the program an icon appears up in the corner. You can import all your bookmarks & settings too. I was a Netscape user before & they are very similar.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

How computer savy are you broots???

edited to say I'm wondering because I am very green to it........we've always been happy just to access the internet.

I manage just fine Lilypon. I certainly do not rank up there with GardenWife but I always seem to be able to solve any problem I may have. I would be glad to help you in any way I can.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Well I'll give it a try :) .......I've avoided posting there because I wanted to know if non-Guru's had done it with relative ease.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I'm on it now..saw that the computer did the importing for me. :D Much easier than I thought it be would be (avoided the expert set up option like the plague). ;) Curious now to see these tabs that everyone talks about.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thanks broots! I really wasn't sure how difficult it would be. We've lost our hard drive a couple of times and my experiences with reloading things haven't been as painless as this.

Cochrane, ON(Zone 2b)

It wasn't hard at all was it Lilypon? There is a 'bookmarks toolbar' across the top, just under the address bar that I find handy for easy access to my most used sites. I also make it a habit to regularly back up my bookmarks to floppy or cd. If I ever lost them I don't know what I would do. Should do the same with my address book but I know I have them printed out 'somewhere'. Did you d/l the Thunderbird email client also or just the Firefox browser?

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Haven't done the Thunderbird yet........what's the differences between it and Outlook?

edited to say I found the toolbar and have starting adding my favorites to it. :D

Final question........What are the tabs that everyone is talking about?

I don't use Outlook. Tried it once about 8 yr ago & then switched to Netscape immediately. Then to Thunderbird.

Re: tabs - when you want to open a link in another tab, just right click the link & select 'open link in new tab' & right under your bookmarks toolbar you will see another tab open up. When you want to close it, just right click the tab & select 'close tab'.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thanks broots! I'm at work right now but will be practicing it tonight. :)

Hi Pam

I'm curious why you changed browsers? Were you having trouble with Windows? Bored and wanted something new? Less virus etc attacks with the firefox? Firefox is better? and if so, in what ways?

I'll go and read the thread on Garden web, if I can get on there.

Linda

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I think Gardenwife talks more about Firefox Linda. I've already noticed less pop-ups (in fact haven't had any in Firefox yet) and the viral attacks are supposed to be quite rare too (if I remember correctly). Our older computer had had a number of Trojan Horse infections and the last clean up disabled some of the progams I had on it.

If Panamoncreel comes by he may be able to tell you more. (I find some of the threads in the computer forum can get pretty long and finding a specific answer can be time consuming).

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

I still use IE and OE. I don't have any trouble with pop ups, trojans or viruses. i guess I have enough programs that take care of all that stuff. I'm happy with what I have running, and usually am from the school of if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Of course saying that, I'm always on the look out for new computer/digital 'toys'. I have an old laptop that I don't use, but have just got my second PDA, and am happy with it's ability to be on the internet with a hand held device.

Linda

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I wanted to see what it was about.......the puter we had up till Christmas was somewhat older and it did have protection on it and it did catch the Trojans but the removal caused some problems. I prolly get more problems on mine because I have teens that download things.....Firefox won't stop that but it is cleaner running and I'm not seeing the pop-ups I saw with IE.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Oh you techies, you! IE, OE, PDA's, and of course hand held devices! ????

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

LOL....try reading Panamoncreel's and Gardenwife's messages when they are talking to another techie! There are so many abbreviations that I want a sticky thread with the definitions spelt out in it.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Somedays I wish I was a techie, I seem to get myself into trouble when I bite off more than I can chew when I offer to fix, repair, upgrade friends computers. I was talking to my techie friend today, and he's using Firefox at work (gov't techie) and is so impressed with it, he's getting it for home. Says it's leaner, faster, and takes up less space than IE (IE = internet explorer, OE - outlook express, PDA = personal digital assistant, commonally known as a palm pilot)

I can't even make my type here go bold or italics, that's what kind of techie I am, NOT!

someone tell me how, puu leeeese

Every time you edit Linda you can also erase the previous edit and that way you will have only one showing.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Hey, I like that grin!! She's right, Linda. Every time you edit, just delete all the previous edit messages.

Broots, if you're still checking this thread, what were the differences you noticed between Netscape and Firefox? I'm bound & determined to avoid Microsoft products wherever possible, so no desire to go to Explorer at this point - I've been fairly happy with Netscape but curious about the other alternatives too.

Donna,
"and of course hand held devices! ????"

Naughty, naughty...you're a bad influence on young'uns like me... ;-)

Sigh....If I stay up DG-ing as late as possible, do you suppose I can somehow avoid going back to work tomorrow morning? :-P

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Spklatt

I think you have jet lag, ice stormitis, winter blues, and missmycats syndrome. That's my diagnosis across the miles.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Shannon, I may be a bad inflence most of the time, but this time I am innocent. I really didn't know what they were talking about with "Hand Held devices", Honest! Hate God if I lie! I am just kinda dumb, that's all...

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

BTW Shannon, I heard on the news tonight that one of the 5 Canadian victims of the tsunami was from Gatineau.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Uncanny diagnostic skills, Linda.....that sounds about right. sigh. I'm on an intensive cat-therapy regimen (Scruffy is sleeping on my lap this moment, as the current designated provider), but there's not too much to be done about the rest, except wait it out & take it easy.

Well, ok Donna....I take it back. I'm a bad enough influence on myself sometimes, I shouldn't point fingers! :-) Some of my colleagues are totally dependent on their little electronic gizmos....I'm just not into it. The amount of time it takes to learn how to operate the thing, and then replacing batteries, buying a new version when yours is obsolete....give me a good ol' paper day-timer and address book anyday!

Shannon

Cochrane, ON(Zone 2b)

Shannon when I changed to Firefox I was using Netsc 7.02 & it was starting to crash every so often. I had read how Firefox was more secure & a smaller program that I decided to try it. I'm with you as far as NOT using Internet Explorer. I do still have to use Netsc for my banking though as it doesn't support Firefox even though they are both Mozilla products. I will say that since I have been using Firefox I have not had one single instance of pop-ups or pop-unders. There isn't a whole lot of difference between the two programs. Very similar. I like the bookmarks toolbar but I think that is also available in the newest version of Netsc. Tabbed browsing is great too. I also like the spam filter in Thunderbird.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Woops, sorry Donna, I just saw your post about the man from Gatineau. Maybe our posts crossed in cyberspace...? Anyway, yes I did see on CBC that one of the Canadians who died was Gilles Bouchard, a teacher from Gatineau. I don't know from what school though - perhaps more info will be available in the coming days. I fear the numbers of dead from all places will only rise in the weeks & months to come.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Got the tab thing down broots........this is really neat!! Ü

I'm not sure if I would need Thunderbird tho'.... my Outlook email goes through Sasktel's servers and they catch emails that are spam as well as those that are carrying malicious coding and hold those emails at their server. When they have questionable email for me they send me an email with a link so I can visit their server and see which should be deleted and/or forwarded.

Quoting:
The SaskTel Spam filtering service has detected suspicious e-mail messages and directed them to your SaskTel Message Center.

You may review the suspicious e-mail at:

E-mail is kept for 14 days within the Message Center, after which it will be automatically deleted. Please visit your SaskTel Message Center to delete unwanted messages and check for valid e-mail.

Broot is there any other advantages that Thunderbird has?

Cochrane, ON(Zone 2b)

Lilypon, sounds like SaskTel is right on top of it. Wish my ISP did that. I just don't care for IE or OE because of all the security threats you read about. There was a security threat posted for Firefox & they had it fixed within a day. They seem right on top of things. I can't really think of any advantages to TB, I just figured if I was changing browsers I might as well try the email client also. I still keep Netsc & IE on my computer though. When my son comes over he uses IE. You might come across the odd website that doesn't work properly with Firefox, but you can d/l an extension that will open the site in IE.

Check under Page Display/IE View
http://texturizer.net/firefox/extensions/

There is also a Firefox/Thunderbird forum
http://forums.mozillazine.org/index.php?c=4

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Thanks Broots! Ü I'll be looking at your links tomorrow.

I've hidden the shortcut to IE amongst the other shortcut icons. Firefox is now out front and centre so am hoping that everyone gets used to using it.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

I've been using Mozilla/Firefox for quite a few months and am very happy with it. Only thing I don't like is that it won't open my daily jigsaw so I open and minimize (sp) it on webmail first. Ditto for some mewspapers. So I just read them on web mail first. Oh yes. Takes awhile to download pictures of which there have been so many flying around lately (iris & lily season down under)
Otherthan the above, I'm really happy with it. Feel much more secure about the baddies creeping in.
Inanda

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

I am so impressed with all of you.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

Impressed!!!!!!!!!! What on earth are you all talking about???????????? Goodness, I'm in my own little corner of the world here..just what the heck is Firefox and Mozilla??????????? really curious? E

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

i thought it was going to be some new plants pam found - who knew
but i too loaded firefox last nite and i am amazed at the difference in loading pages - like owning a testa rosa (i wish)

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Elaine Firefox/Mozilla is a web browzer....similar to Netscape and Internet Explorer. It doesn't carry the viruses that the others are susceptible to tho'.

Lynn I think our next step is to find out which extensions we should be loading on to it. Which ones did you load broots? Is Bugzilla on your computer?

Cochrane, ON(Zone 2b)

Lilypon, at the moment I don't have any extensions loaded. I used to have some but when 1.0 was released, the old extensions weren't compatible & had to be redone & I just haven't bothered to check them out. I really should sit down & find the time to do that. Even without ext. Firefox works great. I have the Bugzilla page bookmarked & figure if I have any problems I will go from there. So far, no problems.

One thing I forgot to mention about T-bird that I like is when you receive an email from someone not in your Address Book & it contains images, T-Bird will not open the images. It displays the text part of the email with a message across the top that reads 'To Protect your Privacy, Thunderbird has blocked remote images' & you have to click on a button on the right hand side that reads 'Show Images'.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Don't think I'll worry about the extensions either then.....until something pops up.

I had a program before that blocked images like Thunderbird. I found it was very handy at that time but now with Sasktel's spam filtering I don't get any junk email. It *learned* from ones I've blocked and doesn't allow any spam into my message service centre (it's now at the point where the only email I receive is from people I correspond with). If the spam programers find a way of bypassing it tho I will download T-Bird.

Thanks again Broots! :)
