Brugmansia Abbreviation List Jan 05

Doris, this list is just a drop in the bucket. LOL! Anymore it is easier for me just to type the names than to try to remember all the abreviations.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

I agree Brugie......it would take me so much more time looking at the "sticky" at the top of the brug forum to find a correct abbreviation than to go ahead and type the name out. For me, it is just too easy to write the complete name and there will be no misunderstanding of what it is and no one will have to refer to a list. I guess abbreviations serve a purpose but they are something that I don't find beneficiary and I am not sure of the real reason why one would want to use them all the time. As time goes on and more brugs are named, it will get more complicated than it already is. There are just too many and the names are easier for me to know and remember than the abbreviations.

I see that many people on the brug forum appear to be for it and feel that it will be a benefit. I am not being critical of the abbreviation list ........I am just not sure of the reason for it.

I can remember when we could use abbreviations and we knew what they meant at a glance. Unfortunately I believe those days are gone forever.
We have so many naming Brugs with similar spelling that using abbreviations would only be confusing.
There is a Chrissy, Christine, and a Christmas. There's an Alicia and a Alyse just to name a few.
I guess I just need to see the whole name spelled out so I know exactly what it is. JMHO

I've heard of Chrissy, but I don't think I've heard of the others, maybe and I've forgotten, but my question is this: Why don't we hear of lots of the others here?? It seems, and I may be, and am likely wrong, but we generally, hear of the 'standards', with, of course, some exceptions. When I say 'standards', I mean brugs like Dr. Suess, Frosty, Becca Lynn, etc. I've only been here 18 months, and I don't read everything, but, with exception of Monika's brugs, generally we chat about pretty much the same brugs most of the time.

The problem I have is, someone will post using an abbreviation, then I have to go find the dang list either on my computer or on the forum. I would love to see people do away with the abbreviations all together but I don't think that will happen, cause they are easier to use.

Another thing ... I surely wouldn't want any Brug I created and named referred to by an abbreviation, seems to demean it. Peope have spend a lot of time and money to create these fine Brugs and many names have special meaning therefore I feel we should show respect by using the proper name!!!

Just my 2 cents.

You are so right Terry, Lists like this have outlived their usefulness .

And yet newbies need to ask the questions when they have no idea which brug is being talked about ..................

Which could be helpful as a learning tool to decipher posted abbreviated descriptions .

I have a list of over 160 brug names (working names included unless the name has changed to a permanent one). At this point LOL I think the abbr list would be way to hard for me to remember. I also only know a few common abbreviations for brugs. For the most part, I usually type them out too.

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

I think abbreviations are useful, but what I typically do is if I am writing about a particular brug, the first time I write it, I write out the name. After that, I'll abbreviate it. If I'm writing about a Charles Grimaldi/Mountain Mist cross, I'd write it out completely the first time, and after that, I'd just write it as "CGxMM". Even though both initials could stand for other brugs, since in my paragraph I'm specifically talking about that cross, I assume people will understand (and to my knowledge, they typically do).

And for the record, I don't have either of those brugs or the cross - it's purely used as an example. ;)

This list now has a new page:

whoever needs access to edit it - please email me a list of names.

Carter, I tend to do that too. I figure if I used the whole name in a post in that thread, folks should be able to figure out the abbreviation in a later post. I also have abbreviations that I use myself in my own records and trying to remember a whole new list gets too much to handle.

Thanks Dave. I like the easy way to access the page too.

I thought it was a good time
