Nicaraguan Brug

Bowie, AZ(Zone 8B)

These pictures were taken in Nicaragua. At the reservation town of Cusmapa, 5280 ft elevation the temps never go to frost, 50 F. is about the lowest. Ideal for brugs? I wasn't able to find out how old this tree is or how long planted there.
The tendrils seem short on the fully opened blooms.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I t looks like it needs some water. I wonder if they gorw all over there. I would love to know if they have any colors we do not have. Like blue. LOL

Westmoreland, TN(Zone 7a)

OK I am new to Burgs and I didn't know they were a tree.
Are all Burgs able to do that?
wow that is so cool i knew they looked like little trees but that thing is big.
Anyone got a good link to a site that will teach me everything about Burgs?
I didn't even know what one was until I joined this site.
And then I saw all the wonderful pictures of them you all were posting and had to have some.
I have a little stick garden now and don't want to kill them so any help will be Great!
Thanks

Wow what a tree. Pretty neat find.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Donna, are you back home now?

Yes Robbie, I have 2 that are approaching that diameter or maybe are already there though they do not look as old as this one. They do it very fast if you leave them in the ground all year round. I know Monika has some fat ones too thogh she digs hers up every winter. Hers are much older than mine.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Wow ... what a great find.

Westmoreland, TN(Zone 7a)

My goodness I can only hope that I can do half as well being I am new to Burgs.
Was it hard to get going or are they as easy to grow as you all seem to make it look?

Well my goodness that is a tree indeed. To bad we had such a spell of bad weather or our brugs could have gotten bigger to. I was wondering just how big they could get. That one is sure pretty.
I love the Nostalgia of the picture to. Reminds me of an old part of town I use to go to with my Grandparants when they made there "weekly" trip to buy grocries and supplies for the farm.
Thanks so much for the post I really enjoyed it.

It could be the photo, but the flesh of the bloom looks very different, doesn't it? Sorta, what, shiny, more substantial, neither one of those adjs are exactly what I'm looking for, but the flesh of the flower looks different, and, IMO, it doesn't matter about the tendrils, which I, too, prefer longer, they are perfect for that blossom...so interesting!!!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

WOW
I wonder if you cut it down, not that I want it cut,but I wonder if they have rings like regular trees do,that tell how old they are

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Any one remember this one that Kell posted a couple years ago ?

I believe it was somewhere in her neighborhood ('-'?)

Scoot, yesterday on the Food Channel, there was an interview with Cheech (Marin), the other half of Chong (Tommy), in CA, and a brug, not quite as HUGE, but very similar to the one in the photo, via Kell, from her neighborhood, and the Cheech brug was also in CA. I cannot remember ever seeing a really giant brug that wasn't yellow. I've seen some big white ones, but nothing like the yellows. Is that because there are more yellows or are the yellows more hardy and better bloomers??? Or am I just off base??

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

We have huge yellows around here. Just huge, as tall as a house and as wide as a double garage door.

The double white one Scoot posted is unusal here for its huge size. There are some big whites and big Frosties, but not as big as the yellows. I have one myself. LOL So I think you are right on Sherry at least around here.

Recently, about Dec 8, we were outside Clinton MS, on the interstate to Vicksburg, and we passed a row of approx 20 yellow brugs (near but not close to a house) in full bloom, and, from our view, they appeared identical. They were planted in full sun, and appeared too far from a watering source to receive regular watering (tho I could be totally wrong about that, they could have a sprinkler, yada, yada). While the brugs would be classified as 'bushes' or shrubs, they were tree like in form, tho multiple trunked, without the classic, arty (if you will) canopy of an alley tree, they appeared to be free growing, not groomed, different from the photo Scoot and Kell sent, I guess I'd call it naturally growing, just not sure. They were lovely. I intend to drive back to see them again this winter and next spring. Brugs are so new to this area, that I'm not sure what we, in the south, should or could be doing with them. If any of you know of any spectacular brugs, or groupings of interesting brugs, in the Arky, MS, LA, GA, MO, TN, FL, AL, TX, in the general Arky area, please advise. My aunt and I are thinking of taking a brug tour in middle spring...

Bowie, AZ(Zone 8B)

If the folks in Cusmapa (Nicaragua) saw the blooms on Kell's Brugs they wouldn't believe their eyes! I wondered how big that tree would be if it got watered regularly. They have a lack of sufficient water there, and it is their dry season now.

That yellow (orange?) brug, Kell, it's a dream,----- sighhhh!!

I did find a photo I took of what at that time I labled Datura Tree, now I know it was a brug. We were staying at the La Marinda Hacienda in Ecuador at 10,000 feet. That was a great trip. Donna

At that time i was using a Pentax camera. D

It doesn't enlarge for me. Sorry.

Bowie, AZ(Zone 8B)

Gordon, I was in Nicaragua for 2 weeks, for the purpose of visiting my niece and her family.
They are in a remote area so we did not travel around a lot. One day we traveled over the border into Honduras, the crossing process is lengthy, I could not have done it myself since I do not speak Spanish (my nephew is native Nicaraguan and he handled the papers for all of us.)
About brugs I saw only this one close up but believe I saw 2 others, same color, at a distance as we drove on a mountain road, and they were near homes.
Advice? Drink bottled water. We did and had no health problems. My sister-in-law got some kind of bites from walking in the wooded areas --worse than chiggers. Hope you can speak Spanish!
The Volcano Park is worth seeing, you can get close. "Parque Nacional Volcan Masaya" is south of Managua.
A sweater or light jacket was adequate for me. Cool evenings.
Got a passport? It is required, but not a visa.
We were on the western side of the country. It is a "third world country".
Oh yes, their money is the Cordoba. 16 Cordobas = $1.00.
Sorry I can't help more on the tourism aspect.

will send a short email..OK?

I don't know why you have to scroll down, it is a small photo and I scanned it but don't know any way to make it larger. Sorry Donna

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

It's fine Donna. I just wasn't smart enough to scroll down.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Farizona, looks like your trip was a success...
that is an awesome tree. girl...did you snap some branches off to bring with you?

Here in Bodrum too, I have seen some that are massive, must be years and years old. and no regular watering either. they are funny here about watering their plants, water shortage and all, they seem to think their plants dont need water. and girl...does it get hot! those poor plants need their aqua.

See yu around
