I am so upset. my son was stuck on a plane in cincinnati for 8 hours on the tarmac, then another 8 hours inthe terminal, then they said that all flights were cancelled, well he had already missed connections on one set of flights, now he missed connection on second set of flights. delta wouldnt help him at all, mind you he is only 16 and handicapped, and they made him find his own hotel, transfer to hotel, I am just going out of my mind thinking of him alone trying to get from airport to hotel, on his own, on slippery pavement, slippery crutches, I am just out of my mind. i am going crazy. i cant do a thing...then when he gets to istanbul, on the 25th - hes been travelling since the 22nd, anyway, there are no flights to bodrum, so i have him on a flight to izmir, then on a bus for 4 hours to bodrum, what a nightmare this is turning into, I rue the day i decided to surprise my husband. i am so distraught, i cant even think
It sucks to be me todya, but worse yet, it sucks to be Alex, traveling all this time alone.
I feel like my brain is going to explode.
and to top it off, I planned this elaborate dinner out for a friend, where then a friend would bring alex and surprise everyone, and I still have to go to this darned dinner thing...and listen to the darned UT player who drives me crazy anyway...
I may just unleash my frustration on him and rip his UT strings out and tell him to just shut up....that classical turkish music sounds like a cat in agony.....trust me....
anyway, I am still hoping that Alex will get here on the night of the 25th...I just cant believe my luck!
sorry, I just wanted to vent.
I had to go to the turkish airlines office to change his ticket for the 3rd time today, and i finally couldnt stand it anymore and just burst out boo hooing.....it got me outta paying for the 3rd penalty charge.....lol.... they add up you know.....
the flight from istanbul to bodrum cost me almost as much as portland to nyk.....and its only a 45 minute flight (istanbul to bodrum)
Hope everyone on Dave's arrives safely and in a timely matter this holiday season.
Merry Christmas to you all
whats happening in Cincinnati??? I am so desolate
So sorry to hear of all your son's traveling problems. I think that big midwestern storm is making a mess out of everything. We're too far north for this one. I heard OH may get 20" in some areas. Is your son out of the states yet? or still stuck in Cinn.? I haven't had the news on so I don't know how they'e doing by now.
Keep your chin up girl. He'll get there eventually. It'll be a story he'll enjoy retelling in the future. And it's amazing how resourceful and adapting 16 yr. olds can be. Please keep us updated, I'll be anxious to hear he gets to you soon.
Laura
Pebble, bless your heart. Hopefully, it will still come together for all. Happy Holidays. Brenda
Pebble, It will be okay and you'll talk about this for a long time. Your son must be a very strong, mature person to be traveling that far alone. I would tell him proud you are of him for enduring such a thing. The weather couldn't be helped and I am grateful that the planes didn't try to leave, it really was terrible and to be a part of it, one would understand. It is still terrible here.
They had a plane that had sat for a while and deiced it and they were getting ready to fly and it iced up again. They made the decision then to cancel flights as long as the sleet and snow were flying, which it did for 24 hours. The sun is out now and the roads should become less hazardous as well as the runways. I pray that your son makes it home in time for Christmas. I believe he will.
Take care of yourself and don't work yourself up so bad that you don't enjoy the time you will have with your son. Can't you postpone the dinner to a night after he gets home? I'm sure everyone would understand.
God Bless you and I'm here if you need me. :) Kathy
I'mm so so so so sad :((
Prayers and positive thoughts are going out to you and your son.
Judy
I know you are Pebble (((((big hugs))))). Peace will be with you when you hold him in your arms. :) Until then, know that God is watching over him. I sure wish I were closer to Cincinnati, I'd go and get him, but he's probably flying now :)
Take care, Kathy
Pebble, I'm not in Cincinnati but I'm only about a mile or two from O'Hare. Let me know if I can do anything if by some chance he gets to O'Hare OK?
Meanwhile, can I help with any phone calls or reservations?
Do you know where he is "right now"? Maybe there is a DG member close by.

This thread is about the snow storm in Ohio
Oh, Pebble! I'm so sorry about your son's delay and the disappointment. It's a mess here. Howie's job has power, but we don't and neither does my mom. There are thousands without power due to this ice storm. My laptop has a charge left on it, and we still have phone service, so I'm dialed up. I wanted to check in at DG! :)
Pebble I am in the next State, 58 miles from that airport. we had over 21" of snow in 24hrs, and Ohio was almost as bad, I know there are several ailines that cannot get out, or planes come in due to drifting, but now snow has stopped hopefully they can get the runways cleared off I sure hope so, and my prayers go out for you and your son to have no more problems.
Doris
pebble - sorry to hear about the delay in getting your son back home. hopefully the snow will stop and they will get everyone home where they belong.
Oh gosh pebble, i am so sorry that this turned out like this!!!
Please know that i'm thinking about you,
Jen
Pebble, I am also in the path of the severe snow/ice storm. Kathy is south west of me about 55/60 miles. Cincinnati is a two hour drive north from me and I live about two miles from Interstate 71 which goes to Cincinnati. Part of Int. 71 between Louisville and Cincin. Int.65 and Int 64 were shut down with no traffic at all for hours. The National Guard was called out in Indianna to Int.65 because folks had been stranded there for fifteen hours.
Your son was not alone in Cincinnati as there were many who were stranded; I am certain he made friends with some of the folks; most times this kind of situation brings people together, and I hope this is the case with your son.
We will all hope and pray for the best. Keep us updated as to hear from him.
Gary/Louisville
Gary, we got 14 inches and it is a real mess out here in Meade County. Ralph just got home from plowing out the country store near our house. 3 other people asked him to plow them too, he had been gone since almost 7 this morning. He said the main roads are impassable out here. My daughter's vehicle is stuck at the end of our driveway. Mail could not be delivered today. Because we are an outlying county, we are one of the last state roads to get plowed. The snow is melting now, but they are saying it is going to freeze. My daughter works at UPS in Louisville and could not get into work today, may not be able to get out of town tomorrow. UPS was the only thing that didn't shut down!
She came home last night and a trip that should have taken her an hour, took her three. She said she prayed all the way home. She went into a snow bank, managed to get out and fish-tailed a lot of the way home (Thankfully, I made her take defensive driving years ago). After getting home, we found out that Interstate 64 had been declared a state of emergency in Harrison County and we know that both directions East and West are now shut down, as well as Interestate 65 North and some parts South.
As horrible as it is Pebble that your son was, perhaps still is, stranded at the airport and especially at his age and condition, believe me when I tell you he is much safer than in the air or on the roads right now.
I do think that Delta deserves a letter from a distraught mother. Wait until you calm down, never write a letter when you're angry. (One thing we learned in business communications!) You almost always say things you regret later. Also, I would see if you find out the name of the CEO of Delta Airlines, that's the person you need to direct everything too, you get nowhere with anyone else. It wouldn't surprise me if they gave him a free ticket sometime. I'm thinking of my son when he was 16, he would probably say "Way Cool Mom!" and think it was an adventure.
BTW, the Cincinnati airport is really in Covington, KY (right on the state line).
Peace be with you Pebble. We're thinking of you and your son today. Kathy
Pebble, I will go back and read the thread in a minute. If your son is stuck at CVG and needs help, please answer right away. I am 20 mins from the airport and can go get him. Someone E'd this to me and I would be glad to help!!
Michele, you are awesome!!!!!!!
Well, I have not done anything yet. :O) I'd like to think if it were one of my kids, one of my DG pals would do the same. And Pebble is a doll!
Yeah, I'd go and fetch a DGer's stranded kid anytime, assuming the roads would let me. (Or even a DGer, LOL)
Good for you to offer, Michele, even though I understand you have ice both below and on top of the snow.
Well it took me about 3 hours to find my driveway but my hubby got right out. Of course he is much more brave (or stupid!!!) in MY car than I am. I am so glad I have that 4 wheel drive! LOLg
Pebble, Dear Heart, you just need to calm down. He will get there, and 16 year old boys (with or without a handicap) are quite resilient.
Pebble--So too bad to hear about your son's travel snafus....I know this probably doesn't do much to reassure you or keep your holiday plans on schedule but I am sure your son is doing 'OK' here in Cincinnati. The people here are very nice and sure to help him out as much as anybody can in this awful weather and the airport is easy to navigate and relatively safe.
Even though there are no doubt lots of other Delta passengers grounded along with him to keep him company, if he is still here when the roads become passable and he needs a place to stay, we will be happy to go get him.
By the time you read this, I hope all is well for you and he is on his way. God bless. Judy
Pebble, things could be worse. Just think, if he had flown into the Raleigh-Durham airport I'd be the one picking him up..and .he'd be eating corn pone and collard greens by now! And a big bowl or two of venison chili! On top of that he'd have to listen to tall tales!
I, too, bet he is on a great adventure. People stick together during these times.
Pebble, I'm really feeling for you. I'm sure it is much harder on you than on your son, that's how moms are.
Sometimes the greatest memories in someone's life start out from an unplanned happening, like this.
I'll be praying that everything will be straightened out and when your hubby sees your son, the look on his face will make all the trouble worthwhile!!
I'll bet he is having quite an adventure and I bet he'll make some friends who'll look out for him!
Huggs,
Bonnie
Please do keep us updated on anything you hear from him, Pebbles.
Pebble, keeping you and your family in my thoughts. Just echoing the sentiments already here. Praying that he has safe travels ahead.
Hopefully, Pebble is well asleep in Turkey right now and not pacing and fretting.
That's a good thing to pray for, too. Pebble's sleep tonight. The Lord has no time zone, though, and He never slumbers or sleeps :) So, let's all keep praying for Pebble's dear son. Hopefully, she'll have good news in the morning.
Does anyone in the Cincinnati area know if the airport is letting flights out now? I saw a few hours ago, they let one plane leave Louisville airport, but not sure if they've let more.
It looks like there are delays just about everywhere.

You guys are awesome, Chele, you are an angel for offering, but yes, I was in bed when all this was been written.
At this time, It's 8:00 am on Christmas eve night, I dont know what the situation is, or if he was able to get out of Cincinnati, or if he is still in the hotel. Apparently he took a taxi to the hotel, (my sister had to fax her credit card front and back to get him in a room)
Its very hard with the time difference. and the not knowing, fox doesnt say anything about the storms.
As it is now, hopefully he will get in to Istanbul tomorrow morning, (christmas day) and then take a flight to Izmir, and a bus to bodrum, will arrive here about 8 or 9 at night...
I am trying to remain calm and not fret, but as you all know, it is very hard....
Mothering is a tough job. and mothering long distance even harder.
I am going to try to keep busy today, I am going to go get my turkey, go to the vegetable market and get some vegetables, wrap presents and try to pass the day.
Again, all you folks out there who have shown your concern and compassion, thank you for making this silly mother feel safe knowing you all are out there and if needed you would go to the airport for me.
Thank you!!!!
no silly mom, pebble. just a mom full to the brim with motherhood :) enjoy the holiday with your dear, dear son :)
Pebble - Bless your heart!!! I totally understand!!! Prayers and positive thoughts.
Judy
huga, are u stillup? whats going on there? are flights taking off in ohio?
Bless your heart, Pebble! This is the best my DH could find for you:
http://www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/usmap.jsp
Click on "CVG" on the map (this is the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airport) and it will give you information about the airport status. You will need a flight number to check on specific flight statuses - though, you may be able to go the airline website (i.e. www.delta.com) to get more information.
I truly do hope all goes well. Take care, and let us know later on!!! BTW, I had too much caffeine too late.LOL. But, now I really am going to bed :) Good night! -- Hugs (Jacci)
Does the rest of the family know he's coming yet, or is it still a surprise?
thanks (Jacci), I will check right now.
GW, no, believe it or not, I have been enduring this frustration alone, the family has no clue....
I think thats why I'm venting here, cause I cant talk about it at home.....
this is what they are saying
Delays by Destination: No destination-specific delays are being reported.
General Departure Delays: Traffic is experiencing gate hold and taxi delays lasting 15 minutes or less.
General Arrival Delays: Arrival traffic is experiencing airborne delays of 15 minutes or less.
This information was last updated: Dec 24, 2004 2:03:03 AM EST
can I assume that his flight is taking off with 15 minute delay??
the thing is, I dont know what flight he is scheduled to fly out with, his itinerary changed about 4-5 times yesterday, I dont know what the final change was.
well, I'm just hping for the best now.
thanks guys for your help and support.
