New to Japanese Morning Glories

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I've been enjoying looking at the many photos of gorgeous morning glories on the forum and have ordered some from eBay for next summer. Here's what I'm getting:

Pink Mt Fuji
Blue Mt Fuji
Purple Shibouri
Yamatoji
Aksuka
Blue Silk
Gypsy Bride
Fujimusume
Heian Akathuki

The only morning glory I have now is Granpa Otts which reseeds a little too freely each year, but it is pretty. I'm excited about seeing the larger Japanese ones. Do you think it's best to start them ouside or will they be OK to start in Peat Pots under lights? Does anyone know the English translation for any of the Japanese named ones? I will hopefully have lots of photos to share next summerr.

You will like the seeds from Cynda. They germinate pretty well. The only one I have had a problem germinating is the blue silk. I'm in Florida so my growing is different from yours. I've ready that they don't like to be transplanted but I have never had a problem and always start mine in pots after germinating with the baggie method. I have about 15 varieties growing outside currently and about half are in bloom.

Do the morning glories just continue growing all year in your zone 9b? I'm am excited to see how they will do here. I don't think I have seen any this large growing here. Sure hope Blue Silk germinates. It looks like one of the nicest.

If you do a search of Japanese Morning Glories in the forums, you'll find a lesson in Japanese from one of our illustrious members. :-)
