I mentioned it briefly a few weeks ago...and I've been watching this plant. Doesn't look like it's going to recover by itself. I purchased it as H. rigida but was told it was not. No reverse reticulation in evidence on the backs of the leaves, so it's become another NOID. I think the problem started when I repotted it in the looser potting mix. This little plant loved the beating down afternoon Texas sun and seemed to prefer to be a little drier than most. The main stem which was of the "corky" type is shriveled and just feels funky
It's rotting (?) from the point where the stem meets the leaf. . It just travels down the leaf until it drops off. I am assuming overwatered...Has anyone ever experienced this?
Tomorrow morning I uproot it and start over with cuttings....what a shame....
I always dread this time of year.
Susan
Sick Hoya
When you take it into surgery, Susan, check the roots first. I know...I sound like a one-trick pony, but if the main stem is shriveling up...it too could be rotted and cuttings are the only way to go.
I have had plants do that - and sometimes for NO REASON AT ALL :o{ . It generally has some thing to do with watering/temperature (too cool)/fungus/bugs...LOL. Haven't figured it out. I just cut it apart...but I am going to guess overwatering/root rott.
If the main stem is all mushy and the leaves are getting like that it means that rot has made its way thru either thru the stem or the roots. In any event it does not matter where it started, it's now everywhere:(
The nice vine on the right will make a nice cutting though, but make sure you do it fast and use uncontamianted material. The rot you have seems to be more of a vicious parasitic one rather than an opportunistic one (the one associated with root rot).
Good luck
NB...how is/was your sick plant?
Carol,
She is now two cuttings. The disease, rot, hasn't spread to the saved pieces. I have bigger problems now. It's snowing in Galveston County, which is almost unheard of. I wrapped my in-ground plumeria with pipe wrap, but the brugmansia are taking a hit.
Everyone in the new greenhouse is warm and toasty! It is sooo beautiful!
Merry Christmas everyone!
By the way Carol I've been wondering what kind of Christmas decorations everyone puts up in Hawaii. Surely they don't hang icicle lights from the eaves, huh? I got a kick out of thinking about it the other day!
Totally wierd seeing Chrismas Decorations here...people fighting over 50$ flocked Christmas trees, santas and reindeer on lawns...yes, the icicle lights...Walmart starts with Christmas here around the beginning of October...and we avoid downtown completely! to say nothing of the malls. Folks here go berserk with buying for their kids...and within days the Transfer Station is cholking with plastic!
We have Pointsettias in the house which we plant outdoors later, and that is about the extent....presents, yes. Without family here and little guys, it is different.
Glad your cuttings worked.... Poor Brugs...poor plummies....weather is wierd, no?
Aloha,
Carol
