Growing Rose of Sharon Shrub from Seeds

Milton, VT(Zone 4a)

Does anyone know if I will need to stratify the seeds or do anything special to grow such seeds?

(Zone 7a)

All depended on who's sowing them...LOL Mine germinate without stratification. But then again I've beeen known to play with my seeds! LOL LOL. If you want quick germination...Nick and soak the seeds overnight. Place them in a bag in the fridge or freezer for a few days. Bring them to warmth and whalaa! Don't give up hope..They can be slow to germinate (30 days) Also I pitch the seeds that float after 24 hours..Because they usually wont germinate. Or you can just winter sow and wait. :-D

I just planted some in pots outside,
I'm letting mother nature start them for me.
I sure hope it works.I planted blue bird.Jody

I didn't do anything with mine and they seeded all over my flowerbed. I potted the babies and gave them away at work.

It's funny. Not long after I posed this question, a Rose of Sharon seed I planted as a test sprouted up. I had done no pre treatment. But it did take more than a month to germinate. Some recent ones I planted were nicked and soaked for 24 hours prior to planting. It will be interesting to see how soon these take to germinate.

I nicked and soaked mine last spring. By the end of summer they were a foot tall. I can't believe how fast they grew.
I bought a two foot hybrid a few years ago and it just sat there and barely grew at all. After two years I decided to move it to another part of the yard. It shot up to 4 feet and is now 5 feet tall. Sometimes things just need to be in a certain place to do well.
I always plant my seeds that I want to take special interest in into a pot of potting soil. I have such dense earth here that they all need a healthier start.
My Rose of Sharon seed sprouts faster than the hollyhock seed I plant. I always thought they would be hard so I never tried them for the longest time. But they are almost as easy as marigolds or zinnias.
