First frost

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I awakened to our first frost -- a heavy, killing frost of 25 degrees. It was gorgeous. I took a few pictures then spent the entire day helping decorate our church for Christmas. Needless to say, there is nothing photo-worthy at this point -- LOL! Its all looking rather "melted", and will all have to come out as soon as I have a free minute...

Enjoyed your pics. We have already had our frost long ago. To have snow all this week, guess winter is coming whether we want it or not!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Definitely a little frosty, Gretchen. You are so lucky to live where you get a little more nice weather than we do up north. We have all enjoyed your extended summer. I'm sorry it is over now.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Great pictures, Gretchen. We've already had our killing frost. You're right, the server is awfully slow tonight.

Beautiful photos Gretchen.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

I love your pictures Gretchen...sorry about your frost. We got some too over the last 3 nights. So glad I have my brugs in the GH and my little propane heater going. It has kept it to 47 degrees or so, while it is 28 degrees outdoors. Brugs still blooming in there.

When I saw your frosted flowers I thought of sugared flowers that they put on a cake! Really beautiful!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I like the way the frost looks on the plants first thing in the morning but boy does it take it's toll on the plants!!
We had our first early last month. Yesterday I awoke to some lite rain ,very cloudy skies and some wind. The high got up to around 65. Went to bed and when i got up this morning guess what? Heavy frost outside again.
The temps have been so crazy hear, ranging anywhere from the 50's up to the 80's for daytime temps and going down to anywhere from 60 to the low 30's at night. Our first hard killing frost came thanksgiving week.

Austell, GA(Zone 7a)

Great pics Gretchen! Although, I sure hate what the blooms probably looked like later in the day. We got frost last night so I'm sure I will have melted impatiens this afternoon.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

they look rather lovely with the frost on them, but sorry you may lose them now.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Thank you all!!! It really was a beautiful sight yesterday morning, but today.......................ugh! Every brug and papaya looks like they have melted! All the lantana (over 200 plants that are 3' x 3') are black and look as though they've been burned. Unfortunately this couldn't have happened at a worse time for me, as I've got so much going on, I can't get out there and cut it all back. Hopefully next week, because its pretty disgusting... LOL!

We have been blessed with a very warm Fall, but like David, temps all over the place. Its supposed to warm back up now. That's so hard on the plants!!!

Margie, I'm glad your GH is working out for you :)

I hope each and everyone of you have a wonderful, blessed day!!!

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

They look so pretty all frosted up. Too bad they're going to melt now. I've had my first frost, but did not have any flowers blooming, they were long gone. About the only thing still looking good is the Persian Shield and several coleus.

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

Wow..........Beautiful pictures.

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

Beautiful pictures Gretchen

Franklin, NC(Zone 6b)

Kauffman, are you able to overwinter your Brugs outdoors? I live in a similar USDA zone and would like to try some, but don't have much indoor space to overwinter them.

Wait a minute, I take that back. I live in 6b.

Gretchen, your pictures are just beautiful. They look like they are either crystal or sugar frosted. Even though you live just a few miles from me, the temps evidently got much lower. Luckily, my daughter and grandson came over day before yesterday and helped me move all my plants onto my covered patio. I covered everything with sheets and everything looks just fine today. The only thing that got nipped just on the top were the brugs in the ground and the top of my arbor that is covered in Blue Dawn morning glories.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Beautiful pictures however, they are "frozen in time"!

The server was extremely slow for EVERYONE last night. It took forever to open up pictures!

Very pretty pictures Gretchen.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I also thought flowers looked like sugar coated candy. Yum

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I have to agree with everyone about the sugar coating. When I walked out the door on the way to start my car, the first thing that caught my eye was the little vinca, and I thought she looked just like a cake decoration! Then I took a few minutes to walk around while the car was warming, and found these other shots. Of course its all terrible looking now! Except the Copper Canyon Daisy in the top picture, still looks fine...

Sylvia, I believe because we live in this very low area along the creek, that we have our own little micro-climate. Its always cooler here by 5-10 degrees, than even a mile up the road at our friend's home in River Crossing! Glad that your's are all okay!

Cala, know you must be happy to be in your new location!

Thank you all for your sweet comments and, I hope everyone has a lovely evening!!!

GeeMan, you are joking, right? If not, a frost is when precipitation (or dew) freezes - ices over. It destroys plants or puts hardier ones into dormancy. I thought it frosts occasionally down in Florida - haven't they had orange crops destroyed by it before? Maybe you are very far south.

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

Thank-x It was very interesting frost wasn't it?
It's 21 right now, but not as much frost.
