hi kniphofia. I have a hippeastrum cybister that looks identical to this but Veronica Read identified it as 'Merengue' not 'La Paz.' I think you may have 'Merengue.' What do you think?

Here is her website for cybister 'Merengue': http://www.veronicareadhippeastrum.com/

Here is 'La Paz': http://www.easytogrowbulbs.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=97
(very light bottom petals)

Here is V. Read's e-mail to me:
I can confirm the picture that you attached is definitely 'Merengue' -
I have grown it for several years and will be mounting a major exhibit
of it at the RHS Westminster Show in February 2005. It is one of the
late Fred Meyer hybrids. You can find full details about it and a large
picture in my book: Hippeastrum - the gardener's amaryllis published by
Timber Press (March 2004). The book is available in the USA. 'Merengue'
is one of the finest Meyer cybister hybrids - often 6 flowers per stem
and 3 stems from 30-32cm bulbs. I am selling top class bulbs of
'Merengue' this autumn together with lots of other Cybisters and
trumpets.
Here are the images I sent her.

On Veronica's website look in the catalogue, then go to her cybister list to see 'Merengue.' Here's another photo of my flowers.

And another. Funny how we have them both on a window sill with white clapboards in the background! At first, I thought I had sent the photo in, not you!

BTW, I got this bulb from a local farm store labeled 'h. papilio'!!!! What was yours labeled?

WOW wow wow, I've not seen those before, just beautifull!!!!! so what are proper names so I can find these? Thanks for the posting, Annie

Thanks for all the information Boojum. Yes I agree that this is Merengue and not La Paz. Thanks also for the link to Veronica's excellent website.

I got mine as a loose Langveld bulb labelled Papilio too! Of course I was disappointed that it was mis-labeled, but not that it turned out to be such a stunner!

So excited that that you are into this flower with me. :)) When I got Veronica's message I went back to the store and got another and gave it to my SIL for a present. It was about to bloom. I was not sure if she would like it, but she loves it. Phew! When I told the store it was labeled wrong, the owner got a bit defensive until I told her I might have gotten a good deal on a rare bulb. She thought I was going to complain. We are the only 3 people I know of (in North America) with this rare cybister!!!!!! I've decided the mix up is a random act of kindness and we are the lucky recipients! I also bought 2 papilios on the lily auction but it will be a while before I find out what they are (no bloom stalks yet). I feel more confident that they are what I paid for, since they were real sellers vs. the open bin. Lucky, lucky us.
