I have just converted my kitchen into a 50's bar and grill....Rosie's! Apparently the real Rosies is somewhere in Michigan.....is this true?? E

That brings back memories. We used to have a place in town called Preston's Five and Dime. Haven't thought about it in years. It must be 30 years ago that it closed. Down the street was a drug store with a counter where you could eat and they had a soda fountain. That was back when the town was nice and small and I knew just about everybody, or so it seemed. Simpler times, eh?
Sandy
Sandy, I came from a small town in northern Indiana, just about on the southern tip of Lake Michigan. There was a main street, a railroad running through it, and a nice little park with a gazebo bandstand. We lived on a farm a few miles out of town, but I always loved to come to town with my mother and shop at the dime store. We also had a drug store with an old fashioned soda fountain.
I loved chocolate sodas. I don't know if they are even available these days. As I recall, they were served in those tall pedestal glasses with the fluted edges. The chocolate syrup was in the bottom mulled with a little seltzer water, then a scoop or two of ice cream, followed by enough seltzer to fill the glass and make a lovely foam on the top.
It sounds great! Like a "chocolate pop float", or something. ("pop" being what most Canadians call "soda"...lol) You'd think that someone, somewhere would still be serving them - we have lots of retro-style diners in town these days. Hmmm...
Yes, spklatt, if you make a 'pop' float with a can of chocolate flavored soda, it is quite similar. Of course, all this happened 45 years ago, and my taste buds haven't got a long memory, I'm afraid!
I've had orange floats and root beer floats within the last year, but have never seen chocolate soda (pop) in cans or otherwise. Sounds yummy...someone should bring it back! I'd definitely try it.
Shannon
orange crush floats used to be my favourite
do you all remember the orange crush that came in the dark brown bottle and actually tasted like oranges
it made a float that tasted like creamsicles used to
my word i am getting old
sounds like floats are on the dessert menu one nite
chocolate sauce is an easy thing to make; ice cream and soda are simple too
or we could do coupes with caramel sauce also and whipped cream and toasted almonds yum better go eat now
Speaking of Creamsicles Lynn, was there ever a treat called a Dreamsicle as well, or did I just "dream" that one up?
I'm not sure about the Dreamsicle, but it sounds good. I don't think we had chocolate soda. I loved root beer and orange crush floats and also cream soda floats. When I buy pop it's usually root beer but I never think to make a float.
We used to call root beer floats 'brown cows'. I remember Dreamsicles when I was a girl. They were one of my favorite ice cream treats. I also liked 'push ups'. They were orange sherbet in a paper cylinder with a stick to push them up as you ate them.
I remember those, Weezi! Talk about a walk down Memory Lane. We had a restaurant in our neighbourhood in Edmonton called "The Brown Cow"! The A&W used to sell Brown Cow drinks too, I remember. And Push-ups and Dreamsicles...I wonder why they don't sell those anymore. 'Course you can't even by a decent Popsicle anymore half the time. Sigh
Yeah, they're all gooey now.
The Brown Cow was my favorite too.....really miss it and the dreamsicles. Brings back memories of the old drive-ins.
The Ceamsicle was orange on the outside and vanilla iceream on the inside? What was the Dreamsicle?
Dreamsicle. A mix of orange and vanilla cream. Just like an orange creamsicle from the ice cream man.
Came off the bicycle pushed carts.......remember hearing the bells ringing and racing out to the street.
In Edmonton a few summers ago they had ice cream "carts" (vans, really) that played electronic music - you could hear it from blocks away. It was the most annoying, grating thing - on summer evenings you could literally hear it for hours, as they scoured the neighbourhood. Fortunately that didn't last too long - as far as I know.
Yes, I believe Creamcicles and Dreamcicles are the same thing. They do still make them, but as with most things, they are just not the same. The orange coating is so thin that the vanilla ice cream shows through in spots. As for popcicles, they are anemic. How expensive can syrup be, I ask you?
I used to wonder how they were going to raise the price of a gumball from the machines.. it would have to jump from one cent to 5... quite a leap. Here in the states, they just began making them hollower and hollower until they'd crush between your fingers. I imagine they are up to a nickel or better now.
I lived on a small farm, several miles from town, so we never saw an ice cream truck. We had to make a special trip to town for ice cream. My mother used to love to stop at the local soft ice cream shop... a Dairy Queen, I believe, and have a hot fudge sundae.
Do any of you remember 'frozen custard'. We used to get it at the little stands at our local county fair. It was a soft ice cream with a wonderful custard flavor... a fine treat on a hot August night with the sounds of the midway and the barns of livestock.
ice cream trucks still trolling in edmonton every summer but i kind of enjoy hearing the grating music as it brings back memories of childhood - can i have a dime, mom, can i, can i?
I think it was the electronic aspect of the music that bugged me....I like the kind that's made up of bells. I can still hear that electronic song that they played over and over....darn it - gotta turn on the radio quick & get it out of my head! :-)
