Maybe we could create some chaffapillars.
Worms in Seeds Packets...
LOL LOL LOL...............!!!! You're good! LOL
Down in the seed packets, early in the morning
See the little chaffapillars all in a row
See the happy gardener, smile with satisfaction
Munch, munch, chew, chew, off they go!
I'm dying! My daughter keeps asking what's so funny?????? HA HA HA
We laugh out loud alot here in the Garden!
This thread got me thinking since I pack my seeds in paper coin envelopes. I opened some Morning glory bush seeds and there were weevils in them, so you guys that just got these.......open the pack slowly! I put the whole pack in the freezer last night. Now, how long do I leave it there, do they need spread out to dry and can I put other seeds in the freezer... like hyacinth bean? Did I ruin the MGB seeds by freezing them since it's a tropical plant? Is there any seed that can't be frozen?
Poppysue, I know the moths you're talking about. I bought sunflower bird seed at Walmart and it had them in it. They got all over my garage.
those are all good questions, Calalily. I don't grow morning glory here, so I haven't run into it. Since our climate has a winter, most all my seeds benefit from some freezer time, but I can't speak for seeds that may come from climate that never freeze. If morning glory are native to a tropical area, it may not be good for them. Maybe someone else will come along with better information.
Calalily: Almost all seeds will do fine with a stay in the freezer, I always try to make sure the seeds are dry before their freezer time. 2 or 3 days in the freezer would do, or whenever you think about removing them. Upon removing them from the freezer, let them come to room temp. before removing from packet.
Morning Glory, Hyacinth Bean seeds would do fine in freezer. I even have some reseed themselves out in the garden and it gets below Zero here. BRRRR..
Joseph! Ewwwwwww you know how I feel about bugs...especially those darn newts!
There's your answer, Calalily. If anyone who has freezing temps has MG's from reseeding, you are going to be OK!
Calalily
Most if not all common garden seeds (veggies and flowers) can be frozen if and only if the seeds are completely dry. I keep alot of seeds including MG's in the freezer. Some for more than 15 years.
They are all fine. They keep longer and never any bugs....
Debby makes a great point about letting them come to room temp first before you open them. You do not want condensation on the inside of the bag/baggies/container with your seeds!!
When I harvest seed, I always take to my greenhouse, spred out the seed on a paper plate to dry out more. Once the seed or pod is dry, I put in I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S BUTTER containers....and just mark the top of the container what the seed is. Once in a while I find some creepy crawlee things, but for the most part, this works for me. Only when I give my seed away, do I put them in those coin envelopes...
Deann
Well, I know in some seeds I have seen tiny, tiny, critters, barely visible with the human eye. I don't know about weevils up here in Michigan. So far I haven't had the experience with bugs in my Morning glory seeds. Hope I don't either. LOL
"Watch Out or the Bug Police will catch you sending bugs through the mail..........and you could get in bug trouble.............LOL
They'd let me out on bail because I'm not a fly-ht risk! LOL!
EWWWWW! When you said you were in bed and the worms fell out, I definably shuddered. Gee, I really hope they weren't anything I sent you!
Interesting amusing and frightning thread yall got here.
I have a wicker basket I throw my seed packets into until I'm ready to try to grow them. When I pulled my MG seeds I put them in a gallon baggie with a paper towel to absorb any moisture they may have. They stayed there about a month or so then I put them into the coin envelopes. I'm not gonna look in there until I need them. Ewyuk.
I have three parrots so buy a lot of bird feed. I learned a long time ago to freeze the food for at least 24 hours before putting into their feed bin. Lots of moths flying around otherwise. I open the plastic bags and wait for it to thaw and dry before dumping into the bin. Sure don't want to feed my birds mildewy food and I don't want bugs flying in the house.
Kim, take some crackers and cheese to bed with you next time, (heehee)
Molly
:^)))))))
ha ha ha LOL..crackers sound more tastey :-D
I had never thought of the bird seed carrying critters. That's kind of creepy, considering how much of it travels around the world. It's a wonder we don't have a real problem with all these little imported guys... illegal aliens!
Weeze,
It may just be the sunflower seeds that attract the moths. I have large hookbill birds so they go for the larger food, sunflower seeds, peanuts, walnuts etc.
I buy a combo mixture that I scoop myself from the bins at the supply store. You should see the moths flying around there!!
Molly
I have a horror story about those seeds moths but it's too disgusting to post here.
Pelleted food doesn't seem to have the bugs problems for some reason...
Molly, maybe you need to get a lizard or two to snap up the moths!
That seems like a superb idea Weeze. We have lots of lizards down here anyway, and they do sneak in the house occasionally.
Problem there, my greyhound is a hunter and she manages to keep critter population back.......now if she would just catch those moths that would do the trick.
Molly
:^)))
LIZARDS??!!??!!
Someone would have to pick me up off the floor (from fainting), if I saw a lizard in the house. I live in the woods we get mice inside...they are sooo cute. But they are asking for a death wish when they come inside. My cats terrorize them, then snaps their necks :-/ Poor little miceys..
My girls are terrified of the mice. Therefore they don't feel sorry for them when this happens. But
Lizzards??!!?? Argghhhhhh I've just somewhat gotten use to the newts in my garden.
Shaking my head Joseph.....
Lizards are very common down here, but the ones that get in the house are small and don't take up much room. If you can catch a baby to put him out, it only takes a minute for him to get your scent and if you haven't killed him yet, he likes you and won't let go when you take him out side to release him.
I had one fall in my paint pan once. I washed him off and let him go. For the rest of the paint job he hung around and would let me pick him up any time. (I knew him because he had a spot of yellow paint left on his forehead.) I admit though, they are no longer cute when they get slammed in the door jamb.
I do so miss my tree frogs. There were always "surprising me in the hanging baskets or the tool shed. I need to get another pond put in.
Just rambling on a Sunday morning.
Molly
:^)))
Arrrghhhh! You can have my Frogs...they sit and wait for me on the back porch!!! I think they are just trying to torture me! LOL LOL
He's actually kinda cute :-D
I have a soft spot for frogs and toads... don't have either here in Seward. I think there are some little frogs north of us. I miss the sound of them, too.
MollyMc......oh wow....that was more information that I needed to know....LOL @ you.....I am afaird I too just don't have the heart to harm these critters. They are all God's creatures...
Deann
Hey Deann, I have been through your town, nice little town. I bought daylilies once at that farm in your town.
Cindy
Molly, I'll trade you a pink Gecko for a yellow frog!
I put my seeds in the freezer for three days, brought them out to warm up to room temp. The weevils are dead.
Do weevils only live in warm climates? If not, don't you think the eggs could survive a freezer vacation?
Eek, now I will have to keep a close eye on them!
oh boy oh boy - now you've got 'em thinkin', Weez. LOL -put that in your pipe and smoke it!!!!!!!
Maybe you should just put them weevils in yer pipe an' smoke em! (Don't inhale!)
ROTFL!!
