who says it does not snow in So. Calif.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

around 9 last night, it was raining hard, prior to going to bed. i woke up midnight to find it was beginning to snow. i know it is not a big deal for people in the east coast, but this is rare for this area. light snow normally come in during the months of Feb. -April for this area.

it is 32ºF at 9 a.m. this morning. this is the front gate of the house.

i am not able to get all my brugs off the ground yet. the snow came in as a big surprise. we are not suppose to get our first frost till Dec 8 of this year. somewhere in this pile of snow is one of my cherished brug, a seedling i grew for Cala. most of the canna plants are also burried in there.

How far south are you? We've been pretty lucky up in my part of Washington. No Snow or even freezing weather.....yet....

Robin

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

here is the east area where i still have lots of brugs that need to be dug up. this is the area the brugs get lots of sun during the summer. i hope i can still save some of those brugs. i was too busy sharing, didn't have time to take cuttings for my own stock for next year :(.

Robin,

i am in the upper desert, right below Big Bear Mt..... the winter playground of So. Calif. folk when they like to go skiing. if u are familiar with So. Calif., Hesperia is 8 mi. north east of Cajon Pass.

here is another area where i still have about 8 brug trees to dig up

That's terrible about your brugs. I haven't grown them long enough to know how they do in this kind of weather. I'll cross my fingers that you get your starts out and your plants before all is lost.

Robin

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Oh MaVie -- your poor brugs! Maybe the snow will act as an insulator and they'll be okay! It is beautiful to look at in your pictures, though! Stay warm, my friend :)

Fountain, FL(Zone 8a)

Oh my goodness..what a shame! I sure hope you'll be able to salvage some of your brugs. Looks like a bit more then a light snow to me. Good luck

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

ma vie...it is hard to believe you got that kind of snow in So. Ca. !
Was it even forcasted?
I have some cuttings of yours that I can share back, if you need them. I hope you don't get too much damage.

Robin... i was not able to save all my brugs. one good thing, most of the ones i cherished the most i was able to pot when my sister was visiting last week.

Gretchen... snow is still falling heavy as we speak. it is neat though, like cotton balls falling from the skies. i hope u are right. this is total new experience for me for this time of the year, we normally get very light snow during Feb - April of the following year. not this time of the year thou.

Ginger_H ... if the snow let up some, maybe i can dig some of them off the ground. i see some of my neighbors watering their trees and plants, which i find funny. it is mere 34º F out there!

Margie, there is no warning about the snow, only rain. out in the brugs area several brug trees are buried by the snow.

OM Gosh, how bitter sweet. How fantastic to get snow, but then knowing that babies are buried out there makes it not so fantastic.
MaVie, you have always been good too me. You sent me quite a few cuttings that are all doing well. Please, if you lose any of yours and need replacements, please dont hesitate to ask. I may just have it.

Gorgeous snow. I'll bet that most of your brugs would be okay if you could get cuttings or even the roots. Sounds like a lot of work. This has been a very strange year for weather all over the country.

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Gosh, sorry to hear the news about your brugs MaVie :(

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

The pictures would make great Christmas cards! So pretty! Hope this doesn't mean you will have a harsh winter.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Jen, i was glad my sister came last week. we were able to pot Tiara, Golden Lady, KGG, and others. our burried in the snow are Dr. Suess, Solid Gold, Kyle's Giant White and a few others

Shirley, it sure is very weird weather this year. last night, when i check the forecast it only indicated strong winds and some rain. no indication of snow whatsoever.

i had Cala's seedling... Jean Pasko x Jessie Noel. i had two of them burried in the snow. one has super long tendrils, whereas the other one does not have any tendrils at all. i'll try to find photos and post later.

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

I hope your Brugs will be okay. I bet they were a bit shocked to find a winter blanket of snow on top of them!! At least it was only snow and NOT ice!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

i hope u're right Shirley.

here is the JP x JN seedling, i nursed for two years before it finally decide to bloom. this is the one w/long tendrils. at least to me they are long, about 3" long.

Thumbnail by MaVieRose
High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

another JP x JN seedling without tendrils at all. both seedlings came from the same seed packet that Cala generously shared with me 2 yrs ago. i had the misconception before that if seeds came from the same packet, would produce same type of bloom. well am still learning. this experienced just proves that different blooms will result from what i would assume the same seed pod? live and learn... and i learn each day from blooms i get from brugs i grow.

Ma Vie, hope your brugs survive. Do you get snow often? Interesting difference in the blooms.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

i hope so too Linda. snow is a very rare commodity in Hesperia. if we ever get some, it would be during Spring time of the following year. not, never in the last cycle of the year. we did not even get any warning from the weather channels. it was pouring rain before i retired last night. when i got up in the middle of the night, i was so surprised to see it was so well lighted by my window. when i went outside, there was the thick snow on the tree limbs.

here is Adora open its bloom the other day.

Looks like you've got lots of blooms. Don't ya just love it!!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Mavie, your snow pictures are beautiful. I kind of miss the snow. When we lived in Ft. Worth we had snow every year, but it's a rare commodity in San Antonio. lol

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

all i can say Sylvia is be glad u do not have to deal with the snow. it was neat to watch falling snow, but once the clean up begins, it not as much fun. lots of tall trees in the property broke their limbs last night. my veggies garden has a 15' trees fallen on it. i hope it stops snowing, not looking forward to the clean up job. i do not know yet how many trees has fallen down or what damages are created by the snow. everything is buried in the snow, about 1-1/2' deep. lucky U!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Hate to say it but better you than me

I'll be buried later.....

Hope it all melts soon for you

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Oh how terrible for you Ma Vie. Hopefully it didn't completely freeze the stems and you can get some cuttings.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

sorry Ada, i miss ur post. yes, u are right i got tons of blooms. unfortunately most are going into shock, leaves are somewhat wilted and am losing lots of buds in the process. the poor potted brugs are in double shock! one from repotting, then the sudden change of cold weather.

i know Karen, at least, the damage that i will be encouring will be super mild compared to what is ahead in the near future in the east coast. i am not wishing this on any one, but at least Y'All in the east can foretell what lies ahead. sure strange weather as each year come. i still do remember last Winter's posting all over the country from last year.

i bet u are so glad Suzie that u move. i'd gather, u do not have any snow in the area where u live now. lucky you!!! well, will see what happens when the weather clears up.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Awww MVR, stay warm!
Sending warm healing thoughts to your brugs :)

Woodville, TX(Zone 8a)

MaVie if your brugs don't survive I will share with you this coming spring. Don't worry I'm sure everyone will help you get back the ones you lost. You have been so generous with others. Jenny

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

hi Vi :), i guess the brugs will be just fine. here look at how they are in the cool 38ºF at 7:30 a.m, the snow finally Stopped!

Jenny, i would guess brugs i grow are as much a survivor as i am. they have been in the cold elements the last 3 nights and 2 days. overnight lows were in the upper 20ish.

edited to add: Dr Suess in front, Kyle's Giant White behind, and on the right is Isabella. the lone one on upper level is an unknown brug that is white with pinkish edges.

Great picture MV.
.................We do not get see something like that very often.

With the brugs looking as if they will survive their Snow Blanket.
Probably helped to keep them warm.

Thanks for sharing (-;

the other Dr. Suess in the yard. almost missed by the fallen 15' tree that could not hold it's weight due to heavy snow on its leaves and branches. the entire tree was uprooted.

ma vie...isn't that quite amazing that your brugs still look good and still have their blossoms, with the 20 degree temps and snow???
Thank God...what a loss it would have been otherwise!
Margie

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Margie, TG these brugs are far sturdier than i thought. guess what? the ones on the ground looked far better than the ones i had repotted. the repotted ones looked so shocked, their leaves and limbs looked so forelorn and heavily wilted. the ones on the ground after i release the top grown from the snow all perked up and looked very much alive. of course some leaves were badly damaged, but those leaves will regrow again. i am glad i do not pamper brugs i grow. they are far more sturdier than what i thought they would be.

here is JP x JN # 1 seedling, the one with long tendrils. i will be right back to take photo of this poor cuttings that came from the limbs that broke, and was buried in the snow.

Margie, here is the same cutting from above. i took them indoors and placed in a vase. see the ones on the table that i just took a few minutes ago. what a difference.

WOW! You have more snow there than we've had all year so far. I saw a few flakes the other night, but they didn't stick, and didn't amount to anything. It is in the forecast though, bummer.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

it was nearly 2' deep Doris. it is so slow to melt. during Spring snow we had, it never last but a couple of hrs. now all the hard work begins. am on my way to HD to pick up chain saw for that huge fallen tree. ttyl... ma vie

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Gosh!!! Just read this thread... she's had a hard winter!!!

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)
