Hawthorn Rust

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hi all,

I have rust on my hawthorn 'Winter King'. Been trying daconil each Spring for the last few years. It has not gotten much worse but not better either. Is there a more effective fungicide I should use? Organic alternative? Should it be applied after leaf-out but before bloom? How many times in one season? Thanks much.

Victor

Hi Victor, you might want to give up on using a fungicide. Rust happens. Cedar Hawthorn rust is caused by a fungal pathogen called Gymnosporangium globosum. What I did, which provided tremendous relief, was that I went out and physically removed all of the telial horns and galls that I could get my hands on. Look for the telial horns and galls on juniper, hawthorn, crabapple, and apple, and other rosaceous hosts. The bag them and toss them out with your garbage or burn them.

If you really feel the need to use a fungicide, consider trying a product called Banner or maybe Mancozeb. Read the label and follow the instructions on the label and don't spray this on any day there is any wind. The only time to apply it to your Hawthorn would be pre bloom next spring. All these products do is protect the tree from spores being disseminated from the juniper hosts in your area.
