Looking for rooting cubes

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm looking for rooting cubes... maybe Oasis... I don't really care which brand.

Does anyone know of a good (hopefully cheap!) place to order from?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I don't know about cheap, but you might want to try www.wormsway.com

Tropicman (I don't know the thread) gets his real cheap at Walmart's in the artficial floral department- called a wet sponge. They come in 3 packs and are around $2.00.

Everglades, FL(Zone 10a)

I found the thread for the wet sponge http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/461791/

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

UGH! We don't have Walmarts around here! I wish we did though... those prices are greaaaat!

I'll try the craft stores, one of them should be bound to have it. Thanks!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

You might want to try Walmart online or one of us could get them and send them to you. You probably want to make sure you get enough of them to justify the cost of shipping though. The stuff is really light but I doubt you could keep postage under 1-2 pounds just because of box size.

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Walmart online... what isn't on line now a days? I think there's one by my dad's work. It'll probably be easiest to ask him to pick up a bunch. Thanks for all your help!

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Well, I just bought some of these and I've started about 30 cuttings of various plants. I'll see how it goes.

I want to hear!! I've been watching this thread b/c these things look really cool! Hey Jan - could you try a seed too? :-) Wondering how they would work and if the roots can get out...
Maybe these wouldn't work for seeds but..

I found about 200+ on ebay. That was a little while ago so I need to see if they're up for bidding again. I think it was $6 which isn't bad.

Let us know how they work out!

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Does that wet foam work on starting seeds or just cuttings..I found a block just called wet foam, they did not have any that said wet oasis so I am wondering if this is the same suff....

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Hard shell seeds like sunflowers may work. I'll try a few different ones and see. I got the wet foam.

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

I did try a easter egg plant in a piece of the wet sponge and after just a week it is sprouting, so lets see if it gets to be a real plant because that is where I seem to lose them..

Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 5a)

Have you tried making your own Grow Cubes? I have two devices that allow me to make different sizes and I make them out of a special blend of stuff like peat, sand, green sand bone meal etc. They can take a while to make a bunch of them but they do work. Jessamine

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

hmmmmm - might have to give that a go Jessamine!

(Zone 7a)

Michelle, What are you tring to root? I use Miraclegrow bag soil to root everything...LOL

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Nothing in particular, I get pretty good results, I just wanted to try something new and cool!

(Zone 7a)

Ohhhh LOL LOL

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

I tried the wet foam thing and so far, I got the following to root.
Snail Vine, Cat's Whiskers, Asclepias

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

Ohhhh, which kind of asclepias? I'm always looking for a faster way to grow these.

Everglades, FL(Zone 10a)

CaptMicha,
If you haven't had luck finding the wet sponges, I am at Walmarts close to daily and I will pick them up for you. I owe you a favor anyway! How many do ya want?
carol

Everglades, FL(Zone 10a)

CaptMicha,
I have 6 wet foam sponges that I haven't opened yet that I got at Walmarts and haven't had a chance to use them. I can send them to you and get more for myself.

They are 8 3/4" long, 3 3/4" wide and 3" high- sorta the size of a red brick. I thought they came in "3 packs" but I put my glasses on and each one is a solid brick.

Want more than that?

Oops! Type-o!!

Capt.
I think I have both Silky Gold and curassavica. I'm ging to try Tuberosa as soon as I can figure out which they are since they're not in bloom right now.
They rooted pretty quickly. About 10-14 days for nice roots. Will be potting them up soon. Roots are already 1-2 inches outside the cube which was about 1x1.5 in. I'll take some pics tonight

Don't forget the pics!! Lol. I remember rooting a cutting of swamp milkweed about two years ago. I must have done something wrong or too fast because it kind of up and died on me. I read somewhere that making your cutting underwater will help b/c it prevent the milky sap from clotting.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

OK here come several pics.

Those all look great! How often are you changing the water in those cups?

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Actually,
I haven't changed it all yet. It evaporates quite a bit so I keep adding water every few days.
Some of the cuttings are still green but haven't rooted yet so I'm not giving up. I am also going to bring in some different ones to try and some to replace ones that died to try again.

Do these cubes break down when planted in soil???

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

This is my first experiment with them so I can't answer as yet. I did pot up some of the asclepias and removed a bit of the cube from the outside where there weren't any roots. I will check the roots again in a month or so and see.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Update.
I have roots on a Don Juan Climbing rose started Nov. 30. I haven't done anything special as far as misting or humidity for this cutting. Leaves have fallen of so there is just a green stem.

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

I always have trouble with roses, but I don't think the leaves falling off is a bad thing. Now a days I Iimit any rose cuttings to just a few leaves at the tip of the plan.

Congrats on the roots!

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi,
I always take off all the leaves but the top 2-3 so it can put more energy into root growth. I just took some cutting of 2 different duranta varieties, jatropha, plumbago and firebush so I will see how they do. I'm going to try some clerodendrums and passi's this weekend. It will be nice if I can start cuttings incase I lose anything to a cold snap.

St. Louis, MO(Zone 5b)

budgielover,

Please tell me how you did this :)

Did you stick them in the foam, and then put it in a cup of water? Do you use rooting hormone?

I have several bougainvillea cuttings, a few in rockwool a few in soil, they are in 1x1 plastic cells under a propagation dome which stays very humid. I used rootech gel root hormone. Sometimes the prepunched hole in the rockwool doesn't snugly fit around the cutting. How important is this?

Thanks for any help I have no idea what I'm doing.

Maureen

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

I pretty much dipped the end in RootTone powder and stuck it partway in a pre-moistened cube about 1.5 x 1.5 in. I then put it in a plastic drink cup and kept water in the cup so it was about half the height of the cube. I didn't cover them at all and just occasionally misted them with ahand sprayer.
