Judy's Jungle Goes Under Wraps....

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you Judy. I think that I can find most of that except for the vermiculite. Can I substitute perlite for vermiculite? The rest of it I think I can get from Walmart, Home Depot or Lowes.

Sure you can substitute

Thank you very much Judy! I really like coming to his thread. It is so relaxing looking at the pictures and talking.

Hi Jesse! I am very sorry things are hard for you. I am sure it will get better soon. I moved countries about 8 months ago. Had to leave my lovely little cottage, my garden and give away all my precious potted flowers and plants.

At the moment I have no plants at all but when I get some going, i can share them with you.

Yes, this is a great thread. I also come here often just to look at all of the wonderful plants.

Spider, I'm sorry that you had to leave all of your plants behind. I have told DH that if we do move to CA that I am not leaving mine behind. I have over 200 babies and I told him that we will just have to rent a UHaul and I'll drive them there myself. I have checked with the CA authorities about what I can and cannot take into the state so I'm okay on that.

It has been so hard not knowing what we are going to do. Back in March of 2005 is when they started telling us we were moving. So that kept me from starting any outside plants or a garden. Now it is almost a year later, and DH has not got a paycheck in weeks. They owe us so much money but they say that they will be able to get caught up in a couple weeks. I hope so. I have not got any new plants for over a month and it is just terrible. (DH is worried about the bills and food but you know how it is to go without a plant for so long. I'm going through new plant withdrawals.) But what can we do other than hope that they pay him soon. Anyway, if we ever do move I will take mine with me. And I also want to be able to share mine with the rest of you. All of them are so young right now so I have not been able to trade yet. And when we first started going to CA, they would tell us that we would be there for no longer than two weeks at tops. But it wound up being a month and I lost a couple hundred plants because of that.

Awwwwwww Judy, they are so beautiful!

Did you grow them from babies?

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Most of them I grew from plugs, starts or cuttings. In 2002 was attacked by a rescue dog and it crushed all the tissue in my right leg. It took a year for it to heal and another 6 months before I could walk without pain. This forced me to let the plants die that I couldn't give away. Some were 30-40 yrs old ... broke my heart but there was no way I could take care of them. All that you see I have collected as babies since then.

Oh, i am so sorry Judy. Are you OK now?

It looks like your did wonderfully well with your cuttings. Do you have new plants ready for Spring?

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I don't need any more plants so I've promised myself not start any. I wonder how long I'll hold out. LOL LOL

Judy,

I would never have known that you went through such a hard time. I have seen it mentioned before that something had happened to you but I did not know what it was and hated to ask. Some people like to keep things like that private. I wish I had been a member of DG back then and I would have helped you with some of your plants. But it looks like you have done a super job and you have so many beautiful plants once again. If you ever need any help, don't hesitate to ask. Great job!

How is your leg doing now? I hope that everything is going well for you and I will keep you in my prayers. I am so amazed at what you have accomplished and you have given me a lot of inspiration. You really do motivate me to do things when I want to just give up. The last month or so has been so hard for me. I am bipolar and suffer from severe depression which I think has been brought on by my birthday. Now that my birthday has passed, (it was yesterday) I hope that I am going to be on the road to healing. It is so nice to have people like you to talk to and share things with. Keep up the good work.

Jesse,

Many people have been diagnosed as being bipolar but actually they are just "normal", life has such a way of twisting us around. I sincerely hope you can overcome that which is bothering you.

I don't know why but there are several hundred people who follow Judy's Journal on a daily basis. www.puppygal.com/judys_journal.html maybe you will enjoy it.

I just write about my life, as it happens. I tell it all; good, bad and ugly. I believe it allows people to realize that life isn't always grand.. sometime it really gets rough, but if we grap hold of our behind and take one step at a time... we win.

Hugs,

Judy I just realized I hadn't thanked you for this thread.

From your posting of the wrap-around shots we did the same thing last Winter.
It was a GREAT sucess.

Such a success we decided to go permanate w/ it this Fall
We have enclosed the porch in double pane glass.
The new Porch GH is great.
What fun to come home from work on a cold day............and have your glasses totally fogged over as you open the door! LOL

Want a taste of Summer.........open the Livingroom window.
All you smell is growin' green.
It's like FL every time we open the door.

Man now I just wish we had a Porch as big as yours!
Thanks!

Judy, I love your brug pics. I think I like the orange sherbert one best...does it have fragrance ?

I love Whiskers and Creamsickle also. They did great for me this year even though it was my first year with them.

Charlotte,

I didn't make notes in regard to fragrance, but I think I would have remembered if it hadn't had a pleasant one. I hope it lives through the winter in the unheated but enclosed dog run. I didn't take cuttings I just absolutely had too much to do.

Scoot,

This year we aren't going to do this ... matter of fact we haven't done anything!!!! My plants are all still outside. We didn't have frost like everyone around us did. I'm betting on fair weather until Thanksgiving or at least 11/15.

I have health issues that are on the mend but the weather is ahead of me. Whatever happens, just happens. I'm planning on pulling the brugs out of the pots, washing off the soil and putting them in bubblers for the winter. All seedlings that have not bloomed unfortunately will not be kept... I have about 30, nor will I keep the brugs that have not bloomed.

I've given away house plants by the van load and have been so happy to find them good homes. My house is now packed with household "stuff" since we sold a house in Memphis and moved it's contents here. Glory, I can't walk except on the path through the house for all the "stuff" and boxes yet to be unpacked.

I unpacked two boxes of cookbooks today and after the third try, DH finally made the shelves strong enough so I could climb on them if I was of mind to do so. This was all my fault but he said he should have taken "Judy" into consideration at the start. Now isn't he wonderful!!!

Life is GRAND!!

Judy

12/4/04 post: Cockatiels - Judy, do you still have them? They look like they would be a lot of company.

Oh, and another thing... does BigDaddy have a brother ?????????? :)

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Oh Lordy, we have many of everything around here. They are in Bob's shop. Do you want one or two? They are Bob's but he might very well let you have some. We finally figured out I'm allergic to them that is why they are out there with him. lol lol

Bob has a brother but he's in CA, musician and has been in a couple of movies for a few seconds. lol lol

Judy

-South Central-, IL(Zone 6a)

I think Bob is such a swell guy! You can just read into your posts the cherishing you two do of each other. I think that's so wonderful!

I better pass on the birdies right now. But if I ever get a hankering, I might send you a note... :)

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I truly believe we are split-aparts, but he's better to me than I am to him.

Hi Judy, I just spotted this thread, and it's great! I'm not surprised at how industrious, innovative, and team-oriented you and your DH are, since I think of you as the dog rescue person with good ideas/advice! The broken leg incident sounds frightening. I've experienced only two incidences in which I was bit hard enough to injure, they were emotional and enlightening, to say the least. To have a broken leg - wow! Though mine often trip me, and one has knocked me over a few times, cutting in front or pushing her way past me. :-)

I've been working on ways to make my deck and outside areas more winter friendly, and learned (basically) how to add a roof on the house almost anywhere to make a porch, when a 12' length was installed over a 5' wide deck last month. It has a three foot overhang, so it will give the dogs and me more dry space outside. Here it is cold (not freezing, usually) and wet. Last year we had 72" of rain! It's just constant buckets from the sky, so doing anything outside is near impossible. My glasses get too wet!

There will certainly be more roofs and porches added as I become more profficient at handling the tools (especially the ladder!) required to build them, and your ideas will help me do it. You and Big Daddy are motivational! Thank you!
