What interesting Spring Bulbs did you plant?

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Just wondered what bulbs everybody was planting this fall (and how many?).

Are you finished planting?

My most interesting is probably the (10) Frittilaria persicaria (sp?)...planted them to help keep the deer away in spring! They say it has a 'skunkish' aroma. Lovely.

Also planted (200) miniature daffodil mix.

And tried some bulbs in containers--Mona Lisa lilies (10) which is an experiment...Mmmm...

What's new for you?!

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Tulipa Clusiana (species Tulip) and Allliums are new spring bloomers for me. I need to get the one Fritt I bought in the ground asap too. These aren't Spring blooming, but I also put in Both pink & red Lycoris and put some Autumn Crocus in too late for this year's bloom. I have another Species Tulip and Crocus Tomass-something on the way from the Old House Garden's sale along with some Jonquills and Narcissus that should do much better around here than most found in the Big Box stores. I just could not resist ordering them Wednesday though I have no idea where they will go. They are coming to work because I think my husband would die if another box came in the mail at home. I know I am terrible!!

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

I put in all kinds of bulbs this fall. Between the coop's and late summer orders I placed for fall deliveries I went a bit overboard. I did finally get everything in and finished up a couple of weekends ago.

Here's the damage report:

I bought a total of 938 bulbs. I probably gave away or traded about 20 or so. Here's the breakdown by Genus (I kept a spreadsheet of what I was ordering because every year I duplicate buy things because I'm so disorganized. Not this year!)

Allium Total 60
Anemone Total 86
Calochortus Total 20
Colchicum Total 8
Crocus-Fall Total 11
Crocus-Spring Total 115
Daffodil Total 30
Daylily Total 30
Hyacinth Total 4
Hyacinthoides Total 30
Ipheion Total 50
Iris Total 29
Lily Total 158
Muscari Total 100
Triteleia Total 50
Tulip Total 157
Grand Total 938

There's probably a handful 20 or 30 others that haven't made it on to my spreadsheet from auctions I bid on and trades.

Of all of these I'm most looking forward to some of the lilies I planted and also some of the species tulips.

I also put in some bare root and potted plants......
Helleborus 3
Poppy Total 6

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

158 lilies! I hope you post pictures next summer! Very impressive bookkeeping, by the way!

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Langbr, you're as bad as I am with the spreadsheet ...I planted about 2/3 of the following, and gave the rest away. Actually not done planting!

50 Muscari
150 Crocus
341 Lilium
575 Hyacinths
577 Narcissus
690 Tulips
36 Hemerocallis (Daylily)
11 Hardy Hibiscus
35 Peonies - early singles

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Good golly, Steve! At least there's someone with a worse addiction than me! :-D Good thing for you is that you still have planting time ahead of you. Hard freeze last night and another tonight. I'm about done although I keep eyeing daffs and narcissus in the end of season sale emails! *sigh*

You sure must have some gardening space. My little ole suburban lot is full up. Fenced in the backyard a couple of months ago and so I'll be busy next year putting a new bed along the fence on the West side. South bed was always there since we bought the house 5 yrs ago and I put the East bed in this year along with another on the East side of the house. After that it's sod removal time and then make 3-foot pathways between them. DH says I have to leave a sizable patch of green for the dogs to do their business. Then it's on to the front yard where I'm really running out of room. Is there a way to garden UP??? LOL

Tabasco - I can hardly wait for the photographs to begin!!

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Sweezel, Well, I confess I just went to the garden center and bought a few more daffodils--am hiding them in the trunk of my car for fear that my family will have me committed for bulbmania! I have some mixed allium from vanengelen still to plant...they are new for me, too, although I grew the giant ones last year and they were a huge hit with the neighbors.

Wish I could plant the daffs my bulbless neighbors' yards. I think bulbs (especially daffodils) are easy and fun and I wish everyone would have a few in their front yards to chase away the late winter gray and welcome springtime for all the passersby! A civic duty kind of thing!

Langbr, I have a book on Vertical Gardening, but it doesn't say much about bulbs!

Am going to put in a few more today...take care. t.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Brenda,

I am in the same predicament you are in.....it's FULL in back especially so I added a couple more beds. This will have to be it, though. It seems OK when you're ordering the stuff and it's different when you have all of it siting there in front of you! I have a friend's house that needs some help, so I'm putting a lot of the overflow there. I guess I need to cool it! LOL

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

I've decided that I'll start doing like Wanda when it gets to the point that I don't have anymore leeway with DH to dig up more lawn......start giving it away and dividing it up to make room for more varieties. A sad lot we are.

Southern, NH(Zone 5b)

I must confess - I hit the Van Engelen sale. We only got 1" of snow - it will be melted before they arrive.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

People.....we MUST start a support group for this obvious addiction we have to gardening! Oh...yeah.....we already have it........Dave's Garden!!! LOL!!

What really gets me is that so many of us have everything....names, qtys (and you have to assume price paid, date, purchase source, etc) handy and organized. I think that's great!

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL! ---maybe YOU have them organized! My 'leftovers' are in a big pile by my garage steps.... I made a promise to myself that every time I go outside I have to plant 30 or 40 of something no matter what the weather! that's as organized as I am!

Now, ownedbycats, are you goingt to hit the Brent and Becky's Sale, too!?

I am intriques by Steve's 575 Hyacinths and Langbr and Ownedbycats huge lily collections...Sounds like you will have elegant and stunning gardens next year.

I wish everyone would get even just a little interest in Spring Bulbs...some of them are so easy (like daffs) and a few daffodil bulbs make such a difference come spring when the skies are gloomy. And you don't necessarily have to become addicted (but it's fun!)

We must see some pictures of these plantings in April. I'm sure they will be fabulous!

Now, who else is still planting, buying, cataloging bulbs? And who's finished? It's time to confess!

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Hi, again, everybody! Well--it's about time for some bulb bloom...is anything coming up? I have some green tips from the daffs but no color expected for several weeks, I suppose--but what about our gardener friends to the South?

Steve planted several hundred hyacinths and daffs---any pics of your garden for us??? Steve, I would like to see how you combined and arranged all of your bulb varieties together with your perennials (or if you dedicated certain beds to bulbs only). You have a lot of bulb material to work with!

Happy gardening. t.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Ownedbycats--just went into plant files photos and saw some of your beautiful tulip postings--Fabulous...(and lucky me I am growing some of the same varieties!)

I am wondering what the different kinds of little blue flowers are that you underplanted with them...is it forgetmenots and phlox subulata? Mmm...wonderful...Wonder if I can start some of whatever you've got going there from seed now?...

Can't wait for your bulb garden to bloom...any signs of life?

Take care. t.

Southern, NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks Tabasco

We just got a foot of snow - so blooms are at least a month away.

Which tulip? I've underplanted phlox near my veggie garden (Bestseller Tulips) and Chinodoxia by the side of the driveway, and muscari (see below) under some trees.

Here's a close-up.

The weather is a lot warmer, so now, tulips
just don't grow right any more. Last year they
were all stunted. A few I missed when I was
digging up bulbs last summer are coming up
now. Maybe they'll bloom OK this year since
we had a freak snow storm in Nov. I can't wait
to see. I love Tulips & Hyacinths. I'm sooo
jealous of you who are in colder regions. Thanks
to DG I can now enjoy them vicariously!! So, keep
those beautful pics coming!!

I've planted lots of new bulbs this year. When
I have the time, I'll compile a list, with pics, to
share.

Glorius pictures! Thanks for posting. Just a couple monthwait 'til a wonderful bloom-fest!

Well, now I'm really excited--I interplanted blue chinodoxia, muscari and some phlox subulata with my bulbs...so I'm hoping for a show even half as stunning!

Because of the tulip pests, I put in just a few t. bulbs (75)--most of those in pots for extra protection, but I have a full season of daffodils from v. early miniatures to v. late poeticus whose bloom time I hope will coincide with the variety of little blue flowers.

Also have some d. poeticus companion planted with spanish bluebells in the woodland garden---and camassia.

K. I am forgetting where yucaipa CA is--somewhere near gold country (or Tahoe?), perhaps? I am surprised that you have luck with tulips at all--they are so touchy in CA with the warmish weather and the temperature fluctuations.

Very cold here today--20 degrees. I am hoping my little green sprouts do not freeze--Oh, my, this bulb mania is making me neurotic! ;-)

Have a good day (and post some more pics please!) t.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

There are red tulips in full bloom outside my office and I saw quite a few early daffodils blooming this weekend, but none at my house yet.

I have lots of Green but no flowers yet. The few crocus I put down have quite a a bit of green. The tulip leaves are as high as 6 inches and a couple seem about ready to send up blooms. Many of the daffodils have leaves about 10 inches high but no blooms starting yet. I did put a few hyacinth in a pot and the blooms are starting to form on those. Yay! I think the species Tulipa is coming up in a completely different place than I remembered planting them. Either that or I have no idea what it is coming up. I did not have a tag at the time so I will just have to wait and see.

Only one of the three Alium types I bought seems to be coming up though. Hoping it'll pop up soon. The pink Lycoris is finally sending up leaves though I thought they had not made it since the red Lycoris sent leaves up last fall after I planted them.

All the stuff I ordered from Old House Gardens came in in December but I never planted it because I was too crushed for time. :/ Does anyone know what the best thing to do is? Plant them anyway? It's all stuff that's supposed to be planted in the fall but I just never got around to it until last month and was not sure if I should then. I have checked them and they all are still nice and firm.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Sweez--So too bad about your Old House Gardens bulbs. But others have found themselves in a similar plight--there are a couple of threads under 'bulbs' which have some ideas for you--

http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/486186/ and http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/479346/

If you have an extra refridgerator you are a lucky girl. t.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks. I think I am going to find a dry spot to plant them for now. It looks like we will probably be moving this summer or soon after so I will probably just put them in the ground and mark them. Hopefully they will be less likely to rot that way.

Yucaipa, CA(Zone 9a)

Tabasco:

Yucaipa is near SanBernardino, up the hill from Redlands
& on the way to Oak Glen.

Here is a pic of missed Tulip bulbs. I'll keep an eye on them
& post what happens. Hope that freak snow storm will do the
trick & these will bloom nicely. The bulbs have been coming
up, but cuz of the too warm weather they're deformed. If they
do bloom at all, the blooms are also deformed.

I think I have a thread in Photos (I think it's Bulb Surprises),
that shows the progress of a basket full of bulbs I dug up last
summer & didn't get into the ground until Jan I think.

Speaking of weather, they've just issued a flood warning for
all of So. CA!! We're kinda of high here, the street slopes
away from us & we have a natural gully behind us, so my DH
says we should be safe. Not so for other parts of Yucaipa.

I can't believe the rain CA is having. Makes our Cincy weather look whoosie! Hope your plants make it thru. OK. now I know where Yucaipa is...thank you for the info. Until last year we lived in Pasadena CA...

Oh, Glory be, Steve! Your yard could be an ad for OHG! And I love that heirloom hyacinth. I bet it has a wonderful fragrance, too. Thank you so much for posting all of the photos of the blooms in your garden. Just beautiful. t.

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

You have a very lovely back yard, Steve. Enjoying your pictures of the flowers blooming, as I am looking at around 6" of the white stuff on our ground!!

SOON, we will have color all over.

Maxine

Savannah, MO(Zone 5b)

tabasco I planted a big bag full of miscellaneous tulips enclosed in a plastic pumpkin that my wife gave to me last fall(from Walmart). I planted them out front by our road. Tulips don't thrive very well in northwest Missouri and generally go down hill each year. Many other bulbs that you plant here do better than tulips but they sure will be pretty I hope this spring.

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Guess what! I am beginning to see some blooms--especially the jaunty little daffodils--

I think these are 'Jetfire', a Grant Mitsch hybrid introduced in 1966. I am going to plant more for next year.

Thumbnail by tabasco
Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Also, 'tete a tete' is coming up... which I think is this one...

an early little one that is easy to force, too.

Thumbnail by tabasco
Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

And here's our 'pimpernel' (I think) from years past...and I think I have to dig and divide these soon...but they are definitely striking flowers, even if their heads dip a little...

And I am also spying some green threadlike foliage--which I think will be the Hawera and perhaps some of the little allium we planted...

Ooooh...so exciting! (for us, at least!) ;-) t.

Very pretty, tabasco - nice to see how your yard is coming to life!!! Maxine, be sure to post yours when they bloom!

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

I took this about 3 weeks ago. First time growing spring bulbs. Planted a bunch of hyacinths, iris reticulatas, a couple daffodils, and a bunch of tulips (not visible in this pic). All I know is I want to plant a lot more next fall.
