Where do you put that beauty in the winter????
aknapp, it's perennial and is planted in ground. You'd be able to grow it as well!
They're quite hardy but they're late sleepers like the butterfly bushes. Something else thats squirrely is that when they first break bud and leaf out, they're kind of yellowish like they were chlorotic. I just recently found out that how they do.
I am just starting to get interested in growing these plants and this is what I have right now:
fifth dimension
the path
snow queen
schizopetalus
erin rachel
jimmy john
morning glory
The 7 plants above range in age from 7 years to 6 months,or this is how long i've had them.
I purchased some liners from Carol Howard on ebay and should be getting them within the next day or so. This is what i'm getting from her:
ocean spray
opening act
pink chiffon
cotton candy
tamibon
banana parfait
gold rain
miss vermont
purple magic
sunshowers
confederate heart
What i'm going to do with them all is another story. I need another plant addiction like I need a hole in the head!!!

LOL David - - I think a lot of us will be wondering what we are going to do with all our new hibiscus pretty soon! I am going to have to do a major reshuffling of plants that are stored in the garage, in order to get all the Tropical Hibiscus away from the garage door(cold air).
My new plants grew so much this year that DH asked me if I wanted pots for Christmas!
you should see my poor little gh. Can you say PACKED!!! All I have is a norrow isle that runs all the way around the inside and it's just narrow enough for me to walk on and that's it. I really need to check myself into a clinic for a thorough checkup I think cause i'm seriously considering building a larger gh this spring.
.
We got new insurance info at work yesterday and they do have a new mental health plan this time which we've never had, maybe they are trying to tell us something . Maybe I should be the first to take advantage of it!!!(LOL)
I never saw so many beautiful Hibiscus in one place until I went to San Diego the past two years..............Seems to love the atmosphere out there!! I gotta get me a Purple Magic!!
"eyes"
Here is the new hibiscus that I am bidding on in EBay. VARIEGATED HIBISCUS SNOW QUEEN RED. Now don't go in and bid against me.
I have got to have Purple Magic also eyesoftexas. They are planning a later coop on Tropical Hibiscus, plan to get it then. I hate to think about receiving to many plants in the mail this time of year. With Kansas weather you never know what you will have one day to the next. The seller of the Snow Queen lives 22 miles from my son in Sugar Land Tx. She said if I win the bid she would ship it to his house and we are going to be there Thanksgiving. Then I will be able to bring it home.
Wow I had just found this tread and just received a few variety of seeds and hoping I will have luck growing them. I have learned a lot just reading all your posts, but is there a trick to starting them from seed.
I know 1 packet is Texas Star, unknown pink and now I am going to have to get a few more.
Any pointers you all can give me will help And I hope to have a few more in the future..I am hooked and have to have them..
Thanks all
Vickie
I have ten. One is nearly 20 years old. I have red, pink, yellow, peach and a couple of red/yellow blends. all are nameless. The Peach is 5 feet tall and trained as a standard. I love them all!
Wow, 20 years old! Gardenmart - - I assume that you keep yours growing inside during the winter?
Yeah....I'd LOVE to know the trick of keeping them over in the winter in cold areas (unless of course you have the luxury of a greenhouse!).
I am able to keep mine alive in my garage - - but it is a lot warmer here than in MA. And even I have to provide supplemental heat if it get too cold, and cannot place them close to the garage door. I did invest in a pop-up greenhouse, which I have placed inside the garage. I bet that just running a utility light inside would provide enough extra heat to keep them happy. http://www.flowerhouses.com/greenhouses/planthouse.shtml
I actually have their StarterHouse!! DH got it for me for Christmas last year to harden off my seedlings. It works very well for that purpose.
I have some pop-up cold frames similar to their StarterHouse that I love! Mine are smaller- -but they work well to put over seedlings in smaller places. And they are great for those "oh my gosh, it's going to frost tonight" moments that can occur when I get overly anxious to get them planted outside.
A recent trip to Hawai'i made me hibiscus-crazy. I have seven wintering inside the cottage right now.
Blue Bayou
Kaua'i Native White (that's the tag it came with)
Salmon with Dark Center (also the tag it came with)
Cloud 9
Hawai'ian Sunset
Kiss & Tell
Sunshower
Here's the smaller file of my Blue Bayou before it lost its leaves.
Very lovely!
Moonglow, welcome to DG.
I am a neighbor to your southeast. Be sure to check out he Hibiscus Co-Op at http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/469189/
Thank you TLC (a).
Thank you for the link, neighbor across the pond =). I'm not much of a gardener either but my recent trip to Kaua'i sparked this interest....
Moonglow,
Looks like you are about 30 minutes from Kell. You should go visit her sometime and see her Brugmansias. When I get to the SF area I will have to plan to visit a bunch of DGers.
DGers, I like that. Diggers LOL, since we [I try to] garden. Hibiscus got me here, and not even a week later, I'm falling for brugmansias already.
Wow, SF DGers meeting. I better get the yard cleaned up. But first, that link George sent. 48 (?) kinds of hibiscus. I am in HEAVEN.
