Royal Oak

Bradenton, FL(Zone 9b)

Can't find "Royal Oak" in the database, but I see references to it on the web. Anyone know the latin name for it?

Also, I have a choice between a royal oak and a live oak, near the west coast of florida. Any idea which one grows faster and which one grows taller?

Thanks!

Nanette: There is no reference to 'Royal Oak' in Michael Dirr's Manual to Woody Plants...Where or what context have you seen the reference to 'Royal Oak'?...Live Oak, Quercus virginiana is an excellent shade tree, and grows quite well in Fla. Curious to hear where someone refers to 'Royal Oak',,,

i've seen a similar reference throughout the web, and the "royal oak" is available at a nearby nursery, along with live oak. unfortunately, the individuals who answer the phone do not have the latin name available. Ideally, i need to select the one that grows the fastest to cover a roadway, powerlines, etc, but also doesnt spread too much as to lose light to some nearby pygmy palms.

I found this on growit.com Quercus germana - Oak: Mexican Royal Oak
I hope it helps

Royal Oak is a traditional UK name for a pub!! (Public House (Bar)) It derives from the large English Oak Tree that hid the then King, Charles 1st, from the Roundheads back in the English Civil War, he is said to have climbed into its branches and they rode past below without seeing him.

It could be that your references is to the English Oak Tree, Quercus Robor.

Is "Meet you at the Royal Oak" the code the blokes use to keep the missus from knowing where they're really going? LOL

I doubt if it would work! Most of them would know where that really was!!
