Crimson King Maple (Acer platanoides)

Salem, OR(Zone 8a)

I just planted the above in my front yard this weekend. At least that's what I think it is, it has the maroon foliage all summer. It was growing wild in my parent's garden. We dug it up and it came up bare root. We planted it, watered it and staked it. My first question is, does it have a good chance at survival? My other question is, it is sort of "S" shaped, especially at the top, will it ever be straight or should i cut some off of the top? I don't want to do anything that will stunt it's growth or affect it's ability to survive the winter. The tree is about 8' tall I would guess and it has very small branches (3"-5" at most) coming out from the main branch. Thanks for any advice.

I wouldn't cut the top. That will effect the eventual height of the tree. If the "S" area is still thin and "whip-like" you can straighten it by taping it to a straight stick or stake. Only un-bend it as it allows, forcing could cause it to snap, you may or may not be able to completely straighten it. As for whether it will make it or not, it depends on how much of the root came with it, and time will tell. You should know by next spring....when it leafs out (or not!). Do you have a pic of the "S" area and some leaves? K

No, I don't have any pictures and my computer isn't cooperating with my pictures lately. The leaves are all gone now as there weren't very many on the small tree. Thanks for the advice, I'll try straightening with the stick and tape method you mentioned.

Place it on the identification or shrubs & trees forum next spring....you'll get an ID pretty quickly! K
