Moonlighting's 'Caprice'

Hey Moonlighting...

I think the link you posted to Mr. Fothergill's 'Caprice' MG is the exact same one I bought off eBay as 'Sydney'...

She says they were sent to her by a friend in the UK, so I'm pretty sure they're the very same ones. The seeds are white, rather than black or brown.

BTW, the seeds are listed as Ipomoea tricolor, but it's very obvious when you see the seeds that they're Ipomoea purpurea ('Joyce Cobb', etc.).

Stacey...IMHO the vines are slightly different and that you got the prettier and more interesting of the two :) ! MHO comes only from the item descriptions given for both...also sad that Mr. Fothergills picture sorely lacks the finer detail as found on the Ebay MG in order to get a good "visual" detail of the bloom for the compare :( . I really like your "Sydney" MG, makes me wanna go bid!.....lol.

I think and am hoping that this one on the bottom is "Caprice", it has the white seeds and I did not have a name for it. the one on top, the darker one has black seeds. I don't know where that one came from, only white seeds were planted in this pot. It sure was a prolific bloomer, the pods are not dry yet.

Do you all agree that it is Ipomoea Tricolor "Caprice"? It will be fantastic to finally have a name for it.

Actually, the species has been mislabled--it is in fact, Ipomoea purpurea. Ipomoea tricolor has the cultivars 'Heavenly Blue', 'Pearly Gates', etc. I've been told by a friend who's an expert on MG's that the 'Caprice' cultivar has been around for awhile, and that there are both white and black seeds for it. I'm thinking it's probably a genetic throwback when it's making black seeds from a group of white seeds, which is not unusual. I'd like a few of your black seeds if you're willing to trade.

I emailed the woman I got my seeds from the same photo, and she agreed that they're probably the same ones, but she'd ask her friend to make sure. I'm pretty sure they are, given the differences in cameras and lighting, and taking into consideration the age of the flower when the photo was taken.

QueenB, sorry I did not get back here sooner.. sure thing about the black seeds, send me your addy. There are not that many but can send you at least a dozen or more. The flowers came out dark blue on that vine they were blooming at the same time, I don't think they were dated and the age of the flowers were the same, but who knows. There was only one vine with the dark colored ones, the rest of the vines were the lighter blue mgs. There are so many interesting MGs that it is so hard to tell the differences in some and I am just learning more about them this year. This one in particular was such a good prolific bloomer that I will definitely plant again this coming year, it is still blooming some here even though we got some cold fronts here lately. The buds are having trouble opening up now with the cold, but the seed pods are drying ever so slowly.
