OK lets get down to scientific methods :-)
a penny is 3/4 inch in Dia. & just a tad bit shy of 1/16 thk
a quart jar is approx 6 & 1/2 inches tall & 4 inches in Dia. with glass thk of 1/8 inch
a one inch tall stack of pennys is 17 pennys
the jar is 4 inches in Dia less 2 X 1/8th thickness is 3 3/4 inches inside Dia.
a drawn circle of 3 3/4 inches will hold 18 pennys
the lid of the jar is using at least the top 1/2 inch leaving 6 inches to fill with pennys
the pict looks like your not using the top 2 inches sooooooo
you have approx a height of 4 inches of pennys
but the bottom 1 inch of the jar is tapered in to approx 3 inch in Dia
a 3 inch circle will only hold 10 1/2 pennys
so first approx 3 inches x 17 = approx 51 pennys high
approx 51 x 18 = approx 917 pennys for the 3 inches
if we average the bottom 1 inch between 18 & 10 1/2 we would average 14 pennys
so the bottom stack of 17 pennys x the average of 14 is 238
917 plus approx 238 = approx 1155
sooooo taking my scientific guess i figure the 4 inches is a tad bit too high
& i will guess 100 pennys less at approx 1055 pennys in the jar

Dick

Hey Moon...you still counting pennies? lol

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

strever - Yep, that would definately be classified as a scientific calculation!!! :)

LOL YTRN! patience little catipillar......

Anyway, this was an interesting thread :). First of all a big thanks goes out to ALL who participated in this contest and made it fun!!! I have to say when I initally counted those pennies it struck me odd how so many pennies could "appear" as not so many. To further confuse and entertain everyone I purposely took the picture of the pennies/jar at a slight angle - hey, it confused me and I knew the count...LOL! I am wondering how many people did a mock penny count with a quart jar :o).

Time for the drumroll!!!!!!!!

Yazoo City, MS(Zone 7b)

The angle was on purpose? I thought you were just a bad shot! LOL
Just kidding!
