Trimming Brown Turkey Fig-Help!

Kingston, GA(Zone 7b)

I have a Brown Turkey Fig about 3 years old and 7' tall. It has several large stalks coming up from the base. This was the first year it produced figs. I have left this fig alone to do it's thing but now one side of it is in the way of where I am having to build my new gh. I need someone's advise on how to prune one side of this huge shrub back safely without hurting the whole shrub and I also need to find out if now is too late to take cuttings from the stalks I will have to cut down or cut back? I will have to cut it back some so I hate to waste what I prune when I might could root some of it's cuttings to share with others. Any advise would be most appreciated. Thanks All! :)

Waiting until spring to cut the plant back would be preferable, but if you have to do it now, what choice to you have?

Cuttings taken in the spring will root better/faster than cuttings taken now.

Since you're in Georgia, you may still get cuttings to produce roots fairly easily.

If you are unsure on how to make the cuts properly, go to a local library and get a book on pruning. That way you won't make any unnecessary mistakes.
Good luck,
Mike

I've had pretty good luck rooting fig cuttings. I put them in big plastic tubs like you store things in from wal-mart. Make sure when you cut them you cut either the top or bottom at an angle so you know which way was up. As they are hard to root upside down.Anyway put them in the tub filled with 4" or 5" inches of good potting soil. Mist them several times a day, every day and take the lid off so they can breath at least once a day to prevent mold. You'll be sprouting roots and leaves before you know it. I would like a few cuttings of you Chicago hardy if you have any to spare.Hope this helps. Jody

Mike--Thank you for answering my post for help. I figured spring would be the best time for taking cuttings but I am having to cut part of this fig tree back now due to some of it's long branches stemming out into the backside of my newly built gh. And I know you are probably asking why I had the gh built right there since the fig was there first. Welll, it was the only level ground on my property and the fig just happened to grow bigger than I thought it would get this summer. I am not taking down the whole fig tree but just one side of it which will probably include about 4-6 of the long branches that came up from the base. I just hated to waste them if they could be rooted now. I thank you for your help.

Jody--I will be glad to send you the cuttings if you would like to try them for the postage costs. Email me if you still want them. Thank you for your advise on rooting them. It sounds interesting and I may try a couple of cuttings just to see if I can do it. :)
