Datura seed pods cracking before seeds are ready

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

I hope this is the right place to post this - I know datura are not brugs, but maybe someone here can give me some advice . .. I have double yellow and double purple devils trumpets (datura) and both are having this problem. The seed pods are cracking before the seeds inside are really 'ripe' or ready and I'm losing tons of seeds. The other thing that is happening is the pods are just rotting on the plant and never even forming seeds.

I'm in Florida and we have had above average rainfall this year, is that the problem? Too much moisture? I thought that during the summer with all the rain, but lately we haven't had so much and it's still happening.

I thought I'd ask to see if there was something I should be adding to the soil / some nutrient they are missing? or is it just the weather? I didn't have this problem last year. My neighbor is having the same problem with hers - - actually, worse because almost all of hers are just rotting on the plant.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Onalee

My guess would be moisture. The stuff inside around the seeds looks really wet. Can you leave some pods on the plant and just put a piece of nylon stocking around each one so that the pods can remain on the plant as long as possible? It might give the seed a little more time to mature.

onalee mine are doing the same this year and i am in south carolina. i think it is because of all the rain we have had. these are my first ones this year besides the white one i previously had but it didnt bloom at all either. (thinking rain)

i hope someone can give you a definate answer but i believe its all the rain and moisture.

MIne have done that too. I was trying to leave them on the plant as long as I could, but when I actually really looked at them, the pods were rotting and had mildew on them. Most of them went in the garbage, but I salvaged some seeds. My seeds looked a little more mature than yours did so I am hoping they will be okay. I am drying them and will see what they look like. We have had tons of rain this fall too, so I expect that is the problem.

Well phooey!! This is the first time I have ever had a datura. As soon as the pods split I cut them off and brought them in to dry. Sure do hope I've got viable seeds and not just trash! Anyone I've sent seeds to, I hope they are ok...if not,I'm sorry...definately new at this.

Only my Lg white dats did this, the purples and Lilacs have held up and matured on the plant.
I have picked a few of the green pods that hadn't split, in hopes they would ripen indoors with some warmth and dryness.

Thanks everyone for all the responses - at least I'm not alone !

Brugie - I tried that on some of the moonflower datura's this year and that just seemed to hold the moisture in and rotted it quicker . . .

Ok, well, I guess there's not too much I can do - pray for dry weather!? Of course, the weather man said it would be dry all week and what happened last night? It rained hard for at least an hour here! I don't know where they get these weathermen!

If anyone has any other suggestions - -- I'm all ears!

Thanks, again!

i am thinking of buying cheap umbrellas for mine. LOL shoot its raining here right now. i dont want anymore rain. rain rain go away and come agian another day!!!!!!!

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

A few of mine did the same thing but they split open but was still a little mushy inside but I read someplace I pour mine in a cup of water and the ones that sink will do ok, so the ones that float I discard and the others I clean and dry and store in a container..this is my first year to grow these also so I am just winging it....
I have a bunch with stocking wrapped around them but I ran out so and trying to watch the rest and see when they pop open, which I miss a lot of seeds that I can't pick up..
Maybe someone will give better advise.. I like the umbrella idea imzadi I might have to try that...

Thanks

Look out, there's gonna be a shortage of umbrella's ! Get 'em while their hot!

Vickei, yes, that probably works, since I've had these a couple of years, I can pretty much tell which ones are good and which are bad by just looking at their color. But, I wash them anyway, so I can check when I'm doing that for floaters. I wash them because they don't stick together so bad if you do that, it gets that film or slime or whatever that is, off of them .. .

Thanks,

My purple and Lilac Dat seeds are blk/brn....the white Dats are beigeish/honey colored, does that mean they are not ripe, or is it that they are just different????

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Hi Rikerbear,
La Fleur Lilac dats (datura tatula) have black or very dark brown seeds. I have also got double purple and triple/double yellow - these are the seeds that are a dark tan in color. If you have seeds from these that are black, they are likely molded and no good. If you have seeds from any of these that are very light/white, they are likely no good.

Here's a picture of the seeds I got out of the pod pictured above. The light ones are no good, the darker tan ones are.

Thanks Onalee, my lilac and purples are indeed blk and brn so I think I'm safe there....my white flowered ones are very similar to what you picture here, so I think I'm save there too.
Thanks for posting :-)

Rikerbear my white dat seeds are a light cream color. some dats seeds are light colored. the yellows i have seen with tanish colored seeds. so dont throw out just try them and see.

Thanks....this is my first year collecting my own Dat seed....last year it was ll gotten in SASE and trades. I was pretty sure of the seed colors being different for different varieties.
Thanks everyone for clearing that up for me. ;-)

Cleaning them does get rid of the goo on them and when they are dried they don't stick together but I hope my so called method works, I guess I will find out to see which ones come up but I know I missed a ton and maybe will have allot of seedling growing under the mother plan..Most of the seeds I have collected from my white Datura was been dark brown..

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

One question I had and maybe I can find out how do you all store your Datura seeds..I just stored mine under the counter and wondering if I should be storing them in the cooler.

Thanks

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

I don't store any seeds in the fridge, some people I think store all seeds in the fridge or freezer . . .

Mine have been fine being stored at 'room' temp for about a year now and I still have good germination on them . ..

Maybe storing in fridge or freezer would make them last longer, I don't know. I would have to buy a whole new fridge if I kept all my seeds in there! (you think I'm joking! I'm not!)

I always just stored my dry seeds in regular white envelopes in my seed box in normal house temps. Never had any trouble with them germinating.

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Great thats is where I have mine in a shoe box since my collection is still very small and I guess if I had the seeds you do onalee I would have to put them in my cooler at school and I don't think that would go over real well..Just kidding I would never do that a definite no no with the health inspector..
I removed my Datura seeds that were looking a little grayish out of the bottle I had them stored in and soaked to see if they still sank to the bottom and they did and the gray went away, so I am really drying them again to make sure all the moisture is out..How long do you suggest they need to dry, I had only been waiting 24 hrs but maybe not enough time..

Thanks y'all

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

I usually try to air dry mine a few days before I close them up . . . especially if they have already tried to mold on me. . .

they mold really easily!

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

thanks I have learned my lesson..i have them drying now and will wait a few days before I close them up..
Thanks

PNW, WA(Zone 8a)

what would happen if you had one that had tried to mold on you and you put it in proxide for a bit then let it dry? Do you think that would help stop that mold process better?

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

I honestly don't know what peroxide would do to the mold or the seeds . .. .

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

i dont know either
