What is the best time of year and how deep can my father prune his river birch? It is a mature tree - probably 25+ years old...
He does not want to kill it but it's right beside his house..
Thanks!
River Birch Pruning?
The ideal time to prune birch is after they have fully leafed in the spring. They bleed profusely so avoid early spring pruning for sure. Seeing you are in a warmer area, now might work as well. If you were colder, I'd avoid fall as the tree might not get a chance to heal itself over winter, thus would still bleed in spring. Overall, the best time for all birch and maples is after the initial spring flush of growth.
Thanks Todd! I will let him know!
