Mg's in a hanging basket?

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Has anyone tried this planting method? If so, can you post your experience (and maybe some off some pictures) on the varieties that were done this way? I am wondering if all the mg's can handle this method of growing or are some varieties better than others planted this way.....

I didn't get a picture, but had the dwarf picotee's in a basket this summer and they did very well.

I grew the orange noah in a hanging basket for the hummers this year, did ok, but did not want to hang very well, just kept climbing itself... Next year I am going to put a ring of chickenwire around the bottom so I can train it down. Sorry no pics.

Thanks Shirley....I will most definately keep that variety in mind.

Donna....It will be interesting to see the end result of your setup....

I am thinking I will have to be picky about the varitey I choose to grow in a basket......

I would think that there must be a dwarf type. My tower is 8ft tall and the vines grew all the way up and then down on it. I have noticed that the MG's flower more when they hang and grow down. I get 25+ a day . The hanging basket idea sounds good . I was thinking of making a long planter to hang from the eve and let the plants grow down like they did on the tower. Then I could look out the window through the flowers, which would bloom and change each day.

Thanks monterey - your picture is beautiful! I know what you mean about more flowers as it grows down because I have a mg in a big pot without support sitting on a table...the flowers cascade down and do not really tangle, but then again they are somewhat protected by the roundness of the container and the width of the table...I like the effect.

Would this be kinda like Donna's idea?

I saw these seeds called ensigns, it's a dwarf MG and it doesn't climb, more of a trailing variety. It says, for hanging baskets , comes in 4 colors. I think those will be the ones I use.

Well it's says they only grow 18 in .I don't think the planter idea is right for them.Maybe I'll go with Grandpa Ott( is that the name?).

Yes, Grandpa Ott's....

I was just thinking of this also. I have window boxes lining the railing of my deck and I was thinking that different color MG going all the way around would be pretty but now I'm not so sure as they would have to hang down.

Also I'm kind of worried about planting MG. I live in the PNW and we have that nasty white stuff that gets in and choks out every thing it can and I'm worried that if I plant these and they drop seeds I'm just asking for trouble. Does any one know if there is a difference between the white invasive stuff we have here and the pretty colored ones you buy?

Yes, there is a difference. The very invasive wild stuff that grows is called bindweed....
