SUPERthrive: Pros & Cons

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Hi Terri, I use ST year round, usually with every watering. I spray my hoyas with Eleanors and Spray n Grow and sometimes add Eleanors to my water. I don't think there is a recommended fertilizer for hoyas, it's whatever works for you. I've used everything from tomato fertilizer to Green Light Super Bloom which is what I'm using now.

Hello Awanda! Thank you so much; however, I see that you live in Arizona, would this year round use apply to all these products, including the fertilizer, for my area - Central North Carolina (colder winters for one)? I had read that one should not fertilize in the winter; is this different in your area becase of the year round warmer temperatures & bright sunlight? My mother lives in Carefree Arizona & my sister in Scottsdale. I just love Arizona with its beautiful landscape, blue sky/sunshine & LOW humidity!! :-) My husband & I were planning a trip to Arizona in March, but my mother is coming here instead (looking forward to showing her my new hoya collection!). My sister said the desert wildflowers are expected to be especially nice this year!
*by the way, my H. lacunosa already looks better after moving it into a shadier location (& a good watering) if that's possible so soon. The leaves seem to be turning to a deeper green, less redness, and the little bud is still hanging on...

Thank you!
Terri

I was wondering if Superthrive can be used on other plants as well as hoyas. How about other tropicals? Or cacti and succulents? I'm just wondering if it works so well on hoyas if it will do the same for other plants.

I use SuperThrive or Hormex year around on all my plants, including hoyas. They all seem very happy, but I've never really tested it.

It would be interesting to put two of the same plants, similar size, next to each other and give one the suppliment and one nothing to see what would happen.

Also, I do not feed any of them, usually at all, with any plant food during the winter. Just the ST or Hormex.

Woodland Park, CO(Zone 4b)

I also use ST on all my plants the same as MaryEv does.
I've never tested it either but I like what I see!!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I use either/or all year round...especially when I transplant or pot up cuttings that have rooted....we also use it when transplanting palms and other ornamentals!!

This is such an informative thread about Super Thrive! I finally bought my first bottle tonight, and went out to water with it right away. I'm not very good at "following the rules" lol and may have completely od'ed my plants on ST. I put probably three splashes, maybe 1-1.5 tbsp.... It won't burn them like fertilizer will it? What do you think will happen? eek! Susanne

Susanne,
I know there are different formulations of ST, but, I think you may have used a bit too much. I use one drop per gallon.

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

I definitely used way too much. Will it hurt anything?

Long Beach, CA

Good grief....we may hear about your plants on the news. Ha.
I thought I was overdoing it by using a a half a capful per gal. (I think that would amount to about a quarter tsp.)
I like that eyedropper idea. I'm going out & get one tomorrow.
I am glad this thread got bumped up again, I had forgot about the eyedropper idea.

Lol...did someone mention Little Shop of Horrors earlier?? So far no one looks to be growing arms yet or talking (back to me that is, they only listen lol)

Marcy, I also read on another thread (maybe this one? I read so many last night in search of an answer) that you can also unscrew the cap a 1/2 turn and squeeze the bottle and out comes one drop. That's what I've done since I found the err in my ways. Although no matter what, I cannot seem to keep that stinky stuff off my fingers!
Thank you for the information yall, this is a great thread. Susanne

Susanne,

I don't think you caused any harm, except in cost (ST is expensive!) I have over used ST and no one seemed to mind.

If you go to a health food store where they sell liquid herbs and supplies for aromatherapy, you should be able to find little glass bottles with eyedroppers. I keep one with superthrive and one with Hormex on my potting bench.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I have never heard of ST burning anything, but let me know. I use a 2 or 3 drops per gallon on my plants on the back patio every time (or so) I water and have never had any problems, however I am really interested to see what happens with the 1 to 1.5 per gallon experiment. Remember, its never a mistake.....Its a learning experience. Just think, if someone had not been CRAZY enough to fly a blasted kyte in a lighting storm....we would be sitting in the dark talking to ourselves

Keep up posted on the on developments.......

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

Lol Mary. No kidding, that price has kept me away for a while. Mel I think I will definitely get one of those bottles...it will keep me accidently doing this again!

Txgeek- lol I'm a great big learning experience then! I will definitely let you know what happens. In fact, I'm going to go take some before pictures right now. Thanks for the encouragement! Susanne

Alright, something funny is going on now. A few of my brugs look like this--
Twisted and funky growth. I'm not 100% positive this is from ST, but I have never seen this before and it's not happening to all my brugs (I may have just od'd in the first batch) and I can't see any other affects in any of my other plants. Geraniums, Plumeria, veggies, some brugs, epi's are all doing fine/great. I'll keep you posted!

art_n_garden - check for mites, webs on the back of the leaves, or bugs. No bugs? Try a little epson salts in the next couple of waterings.

Colorado Springs, CO(Zone 6a)

No mites and I have been using epsom salts for the past 2 months or so....hmmmm. I hope I didn't kill them!

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Not to change the topic, but what does epsom salt do to help?

JesseK

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I had some young plants form those leaves and I just hit them with fert. and put em in the ground. Eventually they saw the light and few straight!!!!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)

I'm with Jesse, why Epsom salt?

League City, TX(Zone 9a)

Epsom salts is magnesium (?). Brugs can be deficient. I've had my leaves do that. Once I found white webs on the back of the leaves. Another time the brug was just plain miserable and the epsom salts helped.

Celaya, Mexico(Zone 10a)

Just note that plants in general only require very small amounts of magnesium of which sufficient amounts are usually present in the soil. Magnesium deficiencies usually only occure with poor/old soil or if the magnesium got leached out with water. Too much magnesium will cause other deficiencies thus one has to be careful not to overdose with the Epsom Salts. Furthermore note that some fertilizers, especially ones formulated for Hydroponics, already contain Magnesium (Mg) thus further supplement with Epsom Salts is not required.
