which boxwood for knot garden - suffructicosa or compacta?

Hi -

I am planning a knot garden for next spring, using boxwood, crimson pygmy barberry and lavender.
The grower I will be getting the boxwood has a choice of suffructicosa or compacta.
I have grown both, but have not trimmed either to the height I will want for the knot garden (12-16 inches?)
Has anyone had experience in trimming compacta and any suggestions?
