I have a Redbud in my yard and I noticed pods hanging off it with seeds in them. Can anyone enlighten me if these need to go through a winter before I can try to grow them?

Redbud Tree Seeds
Yes, they need to be cold stratified.
Tricky seed as it is a double dormancy. You will need to scarify it. I did this by using a serrated knife and I jump started the process by soaking the seed in warm water. Every time I remembered, I emptied the old water and added fresh warm water that day. After that, I just let it plump in room temperature water for a few more days before starting stratification.
Don't give up on the seed when you see no growth. This one is going to take 2 years.

You are dealing with Cercis canadensis if you want to search for additional information.
Thanks Equilibrium, I'll follow your instructions. I'm a patient person I can wait 2 years. LOL
I have a tree I grew from seed several years ago. It is about six feet tall now. It feels so good to know I grew that from seed. I can't remember doing anything special to the seed back then.
