Lots of Seed to trade

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

I have a goodly amount of seed to trade or SASE, but am not sure if I should trade it all now, or wait for the bordom of Winter.
If I do it now it would be done and over with.....but if I wait till Winter it will give me something garden related to do while I'm waiting for Spring. Oh what to do what to do..........
What would YOU do????

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

I am putting mine togather now and will wait until I am through. Got too much to gather, winter Etc

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Working on getting mine together too. Will post when ready probably start next month

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Okay...so waiting a bit longer....good, good. :-)

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes, I think waiting until winter when we can't get out and garden would be a great time to trade seeds or do SASE. I really need to go thru my seed box and either list all that I have or just make a post with those I want to trade away.

Having that 'add to my trade list' feature on PDB is such a blessing! Makes adding to your trade list MUCH faster!

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

What????????????? - "add the my trade list feature on the PDB? " oh I have to go check. Sorry Riker I had a whole reply in my head but now I have to go check this!

And so I'm not completely rude, yes I'm holding off on updating my page too. I have LOTS and a lot of seed cleaning to do too. Seed trading is a great way to tick away the minutes of winter..........

k.......now to investigate that thing on PDB!!

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

You crack me up Sue.......I'm easily sidetracked too.....I'm just not so nice as to leave a reply before heading off. :-)

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

we MUST have something to do in Jan. !!!

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

I didn't last January, which is how I found DG to begin with. :-0

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I always figured I could trade over the winter since folks won't need the seeds until spring, but I found out some folks winter sow or plant my cool weather seeds in the winter. I'm busy harvesting, sifting, packaging, and adding to my trade-list, but it won't be done for awhile. Meanwhile I've still got seeds from last year to trade.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

I have a question to those that trade seed. I have many packages that I received from other DGers this Spring. Everyone was so generous I did not have room for everything. Do you think those seeds will be OK. I have a lot of daturas and stuff left.
Thanks,
Teresa

I am still cleaning cleaning cleaning! I bruised my thumb last night cleaning Castor Bean seeds. I am going to have a TON by the way when I am finished not to mention the others..

Look at these guys - I am going to be pulling up Castors all next year out of my tomatoes!!! They still have a ton that aren't even ready to harvest yet... Couse knowing my luck no one wants Castors! LOL

Can't wait to start trading this winter!!!!!! DG is really going to help winter pass quicker.

My vote is for winter, too! I'm alreay hyperventilating just thinking about the looooooooooong cold months! I thing we need to set up some fun swap themes...Secret Santa, January Jamboree, February Free for All - so many creative minds just sittin' atound Jonesin' for a garden fix......

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Just passing through...didn't want to "ignor" R.B. hehehe Then I saw the "Add item to Trade List" comment by Sue...!!! OMG! It's really THERE! And it really WORKS!

But, first I have to do my chores... :-(

Save some Castor beans for me, Nicole!

(I won't have anything to trade until at least....uh...tomorrow? :-D )

Yeah - that new button is killer. Now we can go browsing and shopping at the same time! Certainly appeals to MY lazy self! I may actually get a trade list created in this lifetime!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

I just tried the new button - wow wee!!! Did you see that Black and Blue Sage in the PDB??? I added it to my want list - it's GORGEOUS!!!

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Ummmm, where is this 'new' button.....I'm not seeing it/finding it????

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Whats PDB???

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Plant Data Base

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

It's at the bottom Rikerbear - it took me a while to find it to. Go into a plant and then scroll to the bottom..

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Thanks....I'll go play :-)

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

If you know anyone with that Black and Blue Sage at the top... Yummy!!! I will buy it if I have to!

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

I'll check mine for seed....not sure if it will come true from seed or not.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

NC, most seeds are good for years, if collected and stored properly. Generally, cool, dark conditions are best, in sealed containers. Some seeds do well stored in the refrigerator or freezer. I have petunia seeds collected in 1997 that still germinate for me. On the other hand, some seeds do best planted as soon as harvested. They are the exception rather than the rule.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

well whenever you all get ready to part with seeds I am ready with envelopes, hopefully I can join the "trading" part next year but I just joined DG in July and I do not have many flowers at all yet, so I am hopeing there will be seeds for postage.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

send me a LSASE (with .49 on it) and I'll fill it up! This is my first year doing major collecting and I have MAJOR seeds to give away. I have bubble wrap so just the L(arge)SASE will be fine. :)

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

Always, kareoke...

Did I read right that cleaning out my seed box is ok (and I'll do my best to identify the year the seeds were collected)?

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

It's always a good idea to let folks know the seeds are older, since some people feel it is important. When I add seeds to my tradelist, I list the year gathered, but when I receive them, I'm much more concerned about how they are handled than when they were gathered.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Hey Weezingreens, thanks for the tip!! I asked about sealed containers in the fridge on another forum and never really got an answer. That's what I have been doing for years but wasn't sure if it was the best way! If that's what you say I know it's a fact!!! Course my seeds almost always sprout so I guess I could have figured that out myself - duh! I grew Lobelia this Spring and those seeds are OLD. I try not to trade my older seeds though, unless I am sending an extra pack or something.. PS, I could have kicked myself - I should have sent you some lettuce the other day! I know it is probably too cold now for you but I bet you can grow a bang up crop in the Spring/Summer! I bought a gigantic pack from Pinetree b/c I love their leaf lettuce so much! Let me know, I would love to send you some!

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Lots of great seed saving info in this thread. I'm glad I put it on my 'watch' list. Carole, I'm *very* glad you mentioned having to sow some seeds *with* the chaff. This is my first year saving seeds and, in some cases, I couldn't really tell what was chaff and what was seed. I wouldn't trade with any of those, but I do want to try my hand at growing things from my own collecting, getting that piece of 'advice' really made my outlook much better. Thanks!

Melvindale, MI(Zone 5a)

Boy Weez, you sure have some lovely flowers. I really didn't know one could grow so many different and interesting flowers in Alaska.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

NC, yes, lettuce does very well here. Since the temps never get very hot, the lettuce seldom bolts, so we can pick off the same head almost the whole summer. I'm in the midst of updating my seed trade list, so take a look in the next few days and we'll trade.

Julie, sometimes you can't see the seeds at all, and sometimes the chaff is heavier. Straining it through a tea ball works for most, or a strainer for the ones slightly larger, but you will always get a bit of chaff. I tried blowing on some pyrola seeds to separate the chaff, and 'whoosh' went the pyrola seed! LOL! Of course, it's always a bit difficult to make sure the recipient is getting plenty of seed... particularly when you are shaking the seeds from your envelope to theirs, the chaff may tend to come out first.

Hemlady, once I figured out what grows well here, I found that I can grow some wonderful plants. Sometimes, I get cocky and try to grow things that don't do well here... but I don't photograph those! Generally, none of my plants get as huge or put out as much seed as elsewhere, since the season is mild and short. Often the fall rains mold seed or they actually sprout in the pods before I can harvest them! On the other hand, I have garden friends who live in areas with more sun and along river areas that have lots of gravel. That means good drainage and warm rocks, even after nightfall.

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Carole, I cleared my throat over a paper plate of seeds (I think Nicotiana) and they were in my keyboad in a flash! (Yes, I sort seeds here...I don't want to miss anything! LOL)

~julie~

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Heck, Julie, just add a bit of moisture to the keyboard, and voila! you have a keyboard garden. If your keyboard is anything like mine, you won't need to add soil! LOL!

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Carole! How did you KNOW??? :-D (That one really got a BIG LOL, trust me!)

~julie~

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

We do so much virtual gardening around here that I sometimes get confused. I could see myself pouring seed on a CD-R and stuffing it into the drive. I've considered downloading the Weather Channel forecast page and editing it, too.

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

Cool! I like the idea of editing the Weather Channel...maybe WE could get *it* right! :-D

And if you figure out how to get those seeds on to CD-R it's only a hop skip and a jump to being able to EMAIL them! LOL

~julie~

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Julie! That would be great! We could send them as seedpegs! We could even use a seed editing program to change bloom colors, etc!
