I just called about getting my tank topped off and was stunned to get the quote of $1.72 a gallon! The gal said she'd discount me to $1.69 since I'm an existing customer, but...gasp! Anyone think the prices will go down before the election?
Fuel oil prices in your area?
gosh i hope so its a 1.81 here and rising.
OMG!!! I thought it was expensive when I had to pay $1.35 last spring!
Edited because I didn't read the thread properly!

Having a heart attack here... Is that American Dollars? Do you have to chose between keeping warm and eating??
Oh sorry thought you were talking petrol/gas prices!!! Ooopps mea culpa for not reading properly :)
For heating oil it's a bit cheaper, but I don't recall the prices per gallon from the last time I looked at a house with oil heating.
Baa - $6.60 per gallon of petrol. Now I'm REALLY having a heart attack since one uses so much more of that. I drive 38 miles each way to work - I'd have to sell the car to afford the gas!
Sequee, I used to drive around the same mileage to work a couple of years ago but the car averages about 45 mpg and most of the time we don't need to go all that far for anything. We don't like the prices but if we want to have a car ..... rock and a hard place :)
I paid $2.16 today. Of course, I was in the "upper" part of our county which is a tourism area. But I can't imagine it being all that much lower down the mountain in our county seat. Pooh!
I saw this about 2 weeks ago
Oil prices predicted to keep rising
After hitting $50 per barrel last week, industry analysts expect oil prices to continue to go up, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. Some experts are saying the days of cheap oil prices are gone -- forever.
One major reason is that oil producers can't keep up with the surging world demand. The U.S. uses about 21 million barrels of oil every day, while it is only able to produce about 5.5 million barrels. The recent interruption in domestic production in the Gulf of Mexico by Hurricane Ivan further reduced production and inventories.
Actually, Darius, it was this (on another thread) that got me to starting this thread. Very curious to see where NY stands. What are you paying for fuel oil and gas in NC?
PS - How are you making out with your basement apartment apartment? Has the humidifier helped?
Fuel oil is about $1.75 in Western Massachusetts.
I have no idea about fuel oil prices here. This house I'm in now has a heat pump and my new landlord is putting in a propane heater for me, AND paying the propane bill. I hope to install my woodstove in the next 2 months... there is a chimney pipe for it already. I like a good wood stove and the propane heater is unvented... with an oxygen sensor to shut it off if oxygen levels drop.
I paid $1.89 for regular unleaded gas today, cheapest I could find.
Sequee, I posted that also here because lots of folks don't watch the weather channel.
Part of my new place is coming along well and the dehumidifier is helping somewhat.
Fuel Oil is about $1.89 in Michigan. We have forced air furnaces here at this home so I don't know what fuel oil goes for in Illinois. Gas is about $2.01-$2.05 at the pumps here in Illinois and across the border in Wisconsin it is running at about $2.09 on up to about $2.19 a gallon. I'm buying a hybrid vehicle next time around. I think it's time.
2.2 $ a gallon in Pakistan
4.60$ per gallon for diesel at the pumps here roughly :O
wow, philomel, I'll bet trips are carefully planned out there. I live about 20 miles from town so I try to plan as many errands and other stops, such as the library, all on the same day. Today I have to open our county's archives, buy lime, pay a bill, go to a meeting and get a few grocery items. It's like that every time I go to town. I will be going back to work in November and thank goodness, I can choose my days and hours.
Sequee-I wanted to ask you a couple of questions about your fuel tank if you don't mind. My husband and I may be moving from TN to outside Troy this spring. We're totally unfamiliar with heating with oil since electricity or natural gas is the way to go here. How much does your tank hold? In a "regular" winter (if there are such things), about how much would you use to keep your home warm? I hope you don't mind the questions, but it would be really helpful to me to know. Thanks. Linda
That price is very cheap compared with England
Seem to think it was about $5.60 there
Been doing sums to convert litres to American gallons (which are different to English), and pounds and euros to dollars. So it's anyone's guess as to accurate those figures are LOL
I have a HUGE tank - holds 550 gallons. I think most are about half this size. You can imagine the first time I had it filled!!! At that point (3 years ago) fuel oil was about $1.19 a gallon, so I was expecting to pay around $200 - $250. When the bill came to $620+ I nearly had a stroke! Now I usually top it off several times a year. The local furnace repair man told me that homes with oil burners for heat and hot water run a minimum of 60 gallons a month. I run slightly less than that, but I do live alone and work full time, and I only heat the house when I'm at home, unless the temps drop into the teens...except the sunroom where the fur babies and the plant babies live! That room never goes below about 55 or so.
Hope that helps!
When we bought our new car last Fall, diesel was 72 €-cents / litre. Now it is as much as 95 €-cents per litre.
So after some calculating... One US gallon of diesel costs us 4.24 $! So don't you guys complain.. Petrol costs even more, today we bought some Petrol (E95) for our beetle and it was 5.37 $ / gallon.
:(
I believe we are paying around $2 a gallon for #1 fuel oil around here. We have 4 tanks to fill here, starting at 500 gals. and going down to 150, so needless to say, we probably will hold off as long as possible.
Weez, holding off only means higher prices when you fill. They are going up every day.
well in my town gas is now $1.99 a gal for reg.
I guess no heats with oil around here. I looked and looked on Google and couldn't find anyone selling it. Gasoline was $2.15 a gallon last week, and that was at one of the cheapest places around. They say that gasoline is more expensive in CA because they use a less-polluting formulation and there is not enough refinery capacity to keep up with demand. But I better stop right now before I go off on a tirade about city-dwellers with SUVs and mega pickup trucks.
At least they have good public transportation systems in Europe, or is that just a legend?
From what I've read and the little I've seen, it is not legend. Many people never own a car - literally thousands of bicycles at the trainstation going into Amsterdam.
My DH just called the fuel oil company, and I was mistaken. It's around $1.83 gal... bad, but better than $2!
Good public transportation - yes and no.. They have less and less money every year and buss lines are not always the best. Here in capital region it is still fairly cheap for a student, but if you go to the countryside you need an own car. So it's about the same as there.
Maybe the people who cycle don't have money for fuel ;)
Here cars are the most expensive in the EU countries as well, so talk about high costs of living! We also have high taxes. Too bad.
Most recently, I'd called to check the current price of LP (propane) fuel ... to top-off our 500 gal tank. Since it's our own tank .. it affords us the right to be able to shop around a bit.
The lowest I found was $1.359 per gallon - but that price was applicable .. only with a 200 + tank fill. Otherwise, the price would be $1.649. Also, the gal stated further, that they wouldn't be able to deliver until at least a good full 'work' week, and very possibly longer .. for they were so backlogged. ... Whoa! ... Egaads!
The highest quote, was $1.729 - and, naturally, ruled that one out real quick-like.
However, just on a whim .. I opted to request of one national company, that had theirs priced @ $1.529 - IF they would consider matching the lower price I'd obtained from the 'xyz' company, @ the $1.359 per gal., ... and that I'd be willing to wait a spell, if need be .. on the delivery. I was well prepared that such requests weren't gonna fly well (if, at all!) .. with the gas companies knowing all too well, that all folks are gonna HAFTA pay thru the nose anyway .. if they need and want the propane! I mean, current fuel prices have been skyrocketing ... with no end in site, and seemingly no room to deal and haggle .. you know?!?
Well, bless Pat and Maw Gertrude too - - This lil gal left the phone for all of 3 minutes, and came back to tell me .. that if I'd be willing to wait a couple of days for the delivery - that they'd sure nuff sell me their propane fuel at a penney less than the lowest price I'd requested!! That now would be $1.349!! She assured me that the delivery driver will have the info about the lower price agreement when he came out .. and sure as sunshine - he DID!! I was just all beside myself with all sorts of joy, glee and delight, I tell ya !!! .. hee ..
Things such as this .. may not be a viable option, where any of you other folks reside .. but it sure nuff would seem .. worth taking a shot at! It was certainly a shot in the dark for me, but .. hey .. by golly, I got what I'd asked for !! It surely don't happen often, but it does .. and when it does, I am most thankful .. !!
Oh, incidentally .. the # of gallons it took to fill my tank .. ended up being only 158 gallons! That would've put in that $1.65 per gallon price with that first 'lowest' priced company I'd contacted! Whew ...
Do I feel fortunate and even more blessed? .. Yeppers indeedies I does!! .. hee hee

I'm glad things worked out for you, Magpye. It's just miserable having to be cold in your own house.
"At least they have good public transportation systems in Europe, or is that just a legend?"
Kelli
It depends which country you are in and where you live in those countries, some countries have a great service, others are abysmal. You're ok in most capital and large cities in the UK but ..... don't get me started!!! ;)
Sequee-Thanks so much for your help-those figures do help me a lot!! If you use oil to heat and for hot water, about how much does your electric bill run in the winter assuming you use it for washing clothes, dishes, dryer, etc. Thanks to everyone else for their info also. It really helps!
Here in the Pacific North West and especially here in Tonasket the price of gas is high. Yesterday i drove to Wenatchee 130 miles to get the oil changed in my car and other necessary things to be done. Here the cheapest regular gas is 2.10 per gal. In Wen. at Costco i filled my tank 16 gal (running on empty for last few miles!!!!) for 1.96. So that was .14 savings per gal.
I do heat my house and small gh electrically. Electricity used to be about the cheapest in the nation here, but after several raises we pay about the same here. In the winter gets as hight as almost 500.00 per 2 month billing. The lowest bill I had this summer was 70.00 for 2 months. Donna
Electric heat is far too expensive here. Propane is pretty prohibitive, as well. Fuel oil or wood heat is the cheapest, or perhaps coal, but it smells so bad
No problem - my electric last month was $43, with me home 3/4 days a week - but no A/C or heat running. The month before it was $30 -again, no heat or air, working 5 days. Previous, which was the highest - A/C every night, Aug. 13 bill came in at $74. Priors bill dates: July $56; June $35; May $37; April $37; March 44; Winter months go back up again, of course, but I think this gives you a fair sampling. I think the highest in winter runs about $55-$70, depending on how cold it gets and if I need a heating unit in the bathroom, etc. I do rely on the worlds best firplace most evenings - firewood runs about $125 a chord (which I buy every other year), but I have so many trees that I have natural kindling and fire starter (I've already collected enough pinecones to last my neighbor and I through the winter.
I think that about covers everything. Good luck!
Evert, you have to understand that gas was always plentiful here and cheap. However in just 3 years, it has doubled in price. I knew it was much more expensive in Europe, but it is still a shock to us. And so many of us have lost jobs due to out-sourcing. American Industry has no loyalty to the American workers that made them rich.
There are a lot of disgruntled people here that feel used and cast aside. I am out of work, and my daughter and her fiance lost their jobs too.
Where I live they give a 3 cent per gallonn for paying cash, but the minimum purchase is 200 gallons. Gasline jumped up again yesterday. Last week I payed $2.07, last night I couldn't find it for under $2.17 . Too sad. They are seriously cutting into my wine budget!
Gas prices have gone up here just as much I think. They never were this high, but gas has never been cheap here either. You also have to think of other stuff - food for example is much cheaper there, and you have much larger assortment of anything. Gladly now new products come to the market more often as new countries joined the EU. For example we now use Estonian sugar as it is about 15-20 cents cheaper / bag than Finnish.
Baa - What do you drive that's get 45 MPG?
