Will the real 'Heavenly Blue' please stand up?

Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

During my morning inspection, I found this...ain't it a beauty? The dark one comes from a single skinny little vine, all the other lighter ones from everything else. I thought my light colored ones were kind of odd, but now I'm wondering if the dark one is the odd man out...

Wow. I don't know which one I like best! Morning Glorys are illegal here in Arizona. They don't sell the seeds here and no one will ship here. Well almost no one, after many attempts I just recently found an online seller apparently niave to it. I've always loved the color of the Heavenly Blue and can't wait until spring to sow them.

I think your dark one is the odd man out. I had the same exact flower come up in my blue star mg pot. I have been hoping someone would post a pic of it so I would finally find out what it was. You did not happen to get your seeds off ebay? Sure hope someone recognizes it. :~)

Hi, QueenB - I am quite sure the dark one is the "real" Heavenly Blue - I grew them in 4 spots in my yard this year. Here is a pic of mine..

No, I got my seeds in a trade from about two years ago, and just grew some this summer. I think maybe the person that I got them from (like I remember!) probably grew them with 'Pearly Gates' and maybe they crossed. I was thinking that when they started blooming that the flowers were awfully pale compared to what I grew before...I kind of like the aqua/sky blue color, actually. It's really different.

Stacey - I think the dark one is the 'real' Heavenly blue, as well. It looks like the ones growing for me . . .

The others are lovely, though!

So then the dark ones are what the heavenly blues are supposed to look like? My mother & I have both grown heavenly blues on & off for years & they were from store bought seeds, but they have always been like Queens light blue one!

Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

Mine from a few years ago were darker than what I have now. The ones in this photo were from store-bought seed. I thought maybe because I have different soil where I am now (much more acidic) that maybe that's why mine were so light this year.

My Heavenly Blue are also darker like Diane's. I just love them. They were my favorites until I found out about the Japanese morning glories. Now I covet the "Tie Dye" flowers. They are incredible. The Heavenly Blue will always stay at the top of my list though. They remind me of my Grandmother's garden when I was growing up.

These were supposed to be Flying Saucers, this is what I got.

Monterey, can I ask how many seeds you planted in that bucket. I want to do something like that so that when it reaches scorching here I can drag it into the shade. This will be my first attempt at MGs.

Thanks!

Looks like a bunch of 'Blue Star' and 'Heavenly Blue' to me...everything *but* 'Flying Saucers"!

15 seeds, 9 germanated. I am getting seed pods. Some have black seeds and some have beige , are the beige ones not"ripe" or are they the lighter flowers. The pods all look the same.

Monterey, that is great info, I'm trying to grow a pot of MG for inside for winter. I planted 7 seeds in a smaller pot, 6 germinated, but something has eaten one already. I hope it looks something like yours in a few months, just smaller.

I wanted to ask the same thing of QueenB - how close were your seeds/ plants together to get such a beautiful display on your fence? I would love to try that next year.

The beige ones are ready...the 'Blue Star' will make that color, along with 'Pearly Gates'.

As for the fence display (from 2000?), I think I planted several seeds something like 6 in. apart down 8-10 ft. of fence. Not all of them took, but most of them did. It took awhile for the vines to finally cover it, but I think it was because the soil was so hard and dry. We'd probably had some good rainfall when those bloomed.

What are the black ones? The beige had some really big and some smaller more regular size, but they all seemed ripe, as far as seeds go. The black ones look like the original seeds I put in.

Great pics, Monterey - I'm off to the hardware shop right now to get some thicker supports for my pot.
Thanks QueenB, for the info. Is it a nightmare to get the vines off the fence at the end of the season when they die?

Not like it would be for chicken wire. I usually take them off when they start looking kind of raggedy, but it's easier if you wait until they're dead and dry. Then they're brittle and they come off fairly easy.

The black seeds are the 'Heavenly Blue'.

Sweet! Thanks!

I forgot to mention that since the seeds are in the ground, the roots have more room to spread, and the vines are much thicker (most, anyway), and tend to go a little crazy. I'll have to take a photo of my 'Pearly Whites' right now...I've got some vines as big around as my keyboard wire, maybe a little larger, and blossoms easily 4" across. My 'Heavenly Blue' vines aren't as thick, but they've put off a truckload more flowers than 'Pearly Gates', and just as big. It may have to do with the fact that before we planted that side of the garden again, we spread cow manure, and the 'Pearly Gate' roots got a kick of nurishment that they really didn't need.

My first year with Morning Glories. How I love it! I planted them late; is that why I enjoy them still? in a garden almost void of color if it weren't for clemoes.

The puzzle is: what makes them open/when? Apparently rain makes them skip a day. And what makes them say "This day is over." ?? In the middle of the sumemr they sometimes closed as early as 11 a.m. Now, as days are much cooler, they stay open later. Is it the available light? the temperature? Today I came home at 6:15 pm and they were still lovely and fresh looking? I will never be without them again. From your discussions, I seem to have the Heavenly Blue. They came from a friend's travel to Portugal. The shade of the Blue also seems to vary with the available light and/or temperature of that particular day. What is your experience?

Shepherd, TX(Zone 8b)

If you could post a photo, I could tell you if you have the same flowers or not.

Washington, DC(Zone 7a)

Silly question: How do you post a picture here? I only know how to send it an an attachment to an email.

Washington, DC(Zone 7a)

I think I figured it out :>))
