Magpye,
WOW!!! Awesome photos! Am glad I finally made the time to catch up looking at posts. I really enjoy those close up shots...you can see just about every detail on those butterflies.
I think that photo of the Empress Leilia is a hackberry though. The hackberry can be distinguished because the lower bar on the forewing is broken...as opposed to empress leilia and tawny emperors which have both bars complete. ALTHOUGH, your butterfly appears to have the coloration markings of the Empress Leilia on the hind wing. Maybe you have a cross? I went to a seminar on "Emperors" and there are gobs and gobs of sub-species of these guys. All kinds of variations and crosses - quite confusing and very hard to call out in the field.
The main thing I look for is the broken cell bar on the forewing to tell which is a hackberry out here. We get inundated with tawny emperors but they are easy to spot as they don't have forewing submarginal spots.
Every once in a while I find an Empress in the tawny mix.
Here's a photo of an Empress Leilia from down in the south tip of Texas. Note: Both forewing bars are complete.
...but again...maybe you have one of the crosses - guess you can try looking up information to see if the empress leilia has been recorded as having a broken forewing cell bar.
Howdy to all .. and much appreciation for the sweet comments and sweetest of praises. Thank you ..
No one's mentioned it .. so, I'm curiuos .. did any of you see the lil pink hearts I'd mentioned?
(sounds like I'm the leprechaun, from one of the 'Lucky Charms' commercials!) .. LOL ..
PuddyPrint .. I think Ken got me straitened out about my 'Empress Leilia', being a Hackberry Emperor, in a prior post. Albeit, your supplementary take and confirmation, is most surely appreciated! I shall be most content tho', in my feeling that " it jes had to have some connotation of 'royalty'! " .. hee ..
You guys are some of the true sweeties! Gives me mile-wide smiles, to 'read' that you folks enjoy viewing them ..

Magpye,
Love those little pink hearts!!! Amazing how the markings and coloration can take on certain shapes. That reminded me of that poster print and book of the butterfly alphabet. Someone went out and photographed parts of the butterfly wings showing the letters of the alphabet and some numbers as well as shapes.
All the ones I've photographed down here just squooshy ovals and jagged shapes.

Ohhh .. TexasPuddyPrint/'Cat' .. Please, forgive me for leaving this thread 'dangle' like this ...
For I can only imagine what may have crossed your mind .. with my {edited} post below yours. I need a swift boot to the hind-end, for sure. Please .. know, that it was nothing negatively associated to your sweet post!!
Gosh doggit, ^ even my comment, above ^ .. seems to only add insult to injury. (my 'foot-in-mouth' and 'mending attempts' needs treatment and much improvement - - bad!!) .. LOL

...I was googling my nickname - puddyprint - and got a link to this post!!! HA! HA! Started re-reading it again. Love that Sandved website. I have a book by Kjell Sandved that has extraordinary butterfly photos!!! Lots of zoom ins on wing designs and markings. I love thumbing through it.
