Some of my 'entertainment' .. II

What on earth .. is this 'grub' lookin' crawly catepillar ? ... Pic #1 ...

He's got some mighty interesting 'coloration' to him. And, he seems to resemble the underside wing 'patterns/colors', of a few much smaller sized butterflies I've seen earlier this year ..

However .. I'm a wee bit baffled .. by the way he seems to hold his 'day-ree-air' up from what ever he crawls onto. And those two (what
look like) lil bitty black 'beads' on top of his head .. I believe, are his eyes .. (but I haint puttin' no money on it tho'!) .. hee hee

I've been trying to find his ID on the internet .. but have yet to find hide nor hair, nor narry a tid bit about this critter .. He'd been heading toward the already-died-back Astilbe, but I figger the Astilbe just happened to be 'in his path' - when I hoisted him up onto the porch railing, to get a better view of his 'grub-like' appearance. I sortee lost track of him, when I came in to upload the pics I'd taken. He
was long gone when I returned to the porch ...

Magpye, now this is totally a purely completely UNeducated statement here, but....

After hours and hours or perusing caterpillar pics on the internet over the past couple of days, many of the hawkmoth cats that I saw looked a lot like your green cat above. I wonder if it's one of those.

Yep, give me caterpillars, butterflies, moths, preying mantis and the like and I'm happy. Snakes and spiders you can keep LOL (I do like the pics of the latter two though...just don't care for them in real life and up close ;-)

The 'biggest' grasshopper .. that I've ever seen ... ... Pic #1 ...

I spy-balled him, UP under the eave of the front porch.
However, I've rotated the pic, so I could tell more about him .. a lil easier!

He's got all of his leggers here .. but, in the next pic (to follow) .. he opts
to 'tuck' one of his back legs up snug to his body ...

That coral hairstreak is sure a pretty one. Tell me, are the haristreak butterflies all as small as the one I posted here about a week ago? He was only about an inch across with wings fully spread.

And that fuzzy caterpiller!!!! So cute!!!!!!!

How big is that big grasshopper anyway? We have some DOOOZIES for grasshoppers here....as big as small birds some of them (and I don't mean hummers!).

A butterfly pic .. from back when the Zinnias were still bloomin' ... .. Pic #1 ... The Sulphur butterfly ..

Thumbnail by Magpye
Churchill, Victoria, Australia(Zone 10a)

That is a marvellous picture! I find the Sulphurs almost impossible to identify from photos. Have you any idea which sulphut it is?

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

I've looked and looked .. and, have yet to get an identity on the two catepillars I'd posted ... up top, of this thread.
The purply/pinkish hue'd one w/his hind end hoisted up, on October 6th .. and the bright green one, on October 7th.
Both .. were relatively large catepillars: about 2 1/2 - 3 inches long.

Thought surely, that Salvia_lover had me headed in the right general direction, for the
bright green one .. but he doesn't quite 'match' closely enuff .. to any of those, on that link.

Any assistance rendered, would be most appreciated . . .

- Magpye

kennedyh .. I think the Sulphur in that last pic, jes may be the Cloudless Giant Sulphur. What do ya think ken ?

Cape Cod, MA(Zone 7a)

I don't know Magpye, the pink one looks like something out of Alice in Wonderland- very cool but I have no clue. Sorry.
I love your inflight picture of the swallowtail! all of the pics are great. Excellent photography!

Thanks so much oceangirl .. for givin' it a go, tho' .. and, the compliments.

Here it is .. March 12, 2005 ... and today, a feast for these ol eyes .. was my first flutterbye!!

A wee lil tiny thing .. but ohhhh, my .. what a brilliant irredescent blue on the top sides of his wings. And of course, much too flitty a lil flyer .. so I failed miserably, in all attempts to capture a pic of his wings open wide! ..

He looked to be one of those same lil guys that I managed to get a pic of the several of them, near some moisture on the ground, last year! ... And, yep - nachurly .. the name totally escapes me! .. hee .. I was jes so doggone excited to see this lil beauty and get his mug shot posted! I figure if he's out and up and flittin' about - Spring jes cant be too far !!

To give you an idea of how weency teeny he is - the rocks you see in the pic, are our
driveway rocks and gravel!

Great news Magpye....although I'm sorry if you're sad to see the end of the snow season :-).

I've seen lots of butterflies too. And it seems that the flying critters are starting to migrate more to our neighborhood now that the construction is waning and the gardens are waxing :-). I saw 3 new butterflies in the past week that I hadn't seen before. One I recognized from the online butterfly ID hunts I did last summer. But today I saw a black one....quite probably s/he had more color than that, but I only saw black as s/he very quickly fluttered by my head and on to greener pastures. I sure hope s/he likes some of the things I have in my garden this year and comes to visit soon and often....with all of her relatives (close and distant) as well :-)

Thank ye Konkreteblond!! .. Yeppers, I agree!!

(*HeeHee*) .. The ol ugly ghastly booger may be 'jes an ol moth' when he grows up - but his beastly personna and quirky antics sure kept quite a few of us folks (kids & adults alike!) .. quite amused that particular day!!

Them lil bitty 'beady' black balls for eyes, settin' up on top of his head .. were some shockers, to say the least .. And something I don't recollect ever seeing on any 'worms' (or 'cats'!) before!! (*least I thank they wuz his spyballers, anyway)!

Again, much MUCH appreciation .. for ID'ing the ol beast fer me!

Hey Konkrete~
We ought to change the name of this forum to "Moths and Hummers." You really are the "Queen of the Moths." You know them all.
