It took 2 years for one of these to bloom and it sent up a pup which I hope will bloom next year. Not being a bulb grower and living in Florida, I am faced with some problems (to me).I've always heard you let the foliage die down....this one hasn't even begun after 3-4 months after blooming. Should I cut it back? Next, it was terribly root bound and you "bulbers" told me to wait until after it bloomed. When I seperate them, how deep should I plant it? It also has flourishing foliage. And last, it was knocked over by one of the hurricanes and not flound for a bit so it is growing at an angle...please see photo. If I should keep the foliage should I stake it to try and straighten it out? Or just yell at? Sorry, couldn't resist.......I've loved the blooms and want to do the best for it and this is the place to find out how to do this! Thanks in advance!
Advice on blood lily please!
Hi Dale,
Where we're at, these won't die back until a freeze comes through, which may or may not happen. At this point, you can cut them back whenever you're ready, and re-plant them, after dividing. These are ground hardy where you are, and can handle a wide range from full sun to partial shade. The can grow in full shade, but I've found they tend to stretch.
When you re-plant them, plant so the tip of the bulb is at soil level.
Hope things are going well for you on the key.
Chris
Thanks Chris! My Cannas are starting to bloom! How did you make out with Jeanne? We had stronger winds, not as much rain as with Charley and Frances, but I think Frances cleaned out the trees of little twigs et al as I didn't have near as much raking to do. Beaches took a real beating though!
Chris,
Should I treat my asiatic lilies the same way? I don't have many places to keep these bulbs dry...the blood lily just sat in the back of the garden, rain or shine, and when I noticed growth, I brought it forward...is this OK?
Dale
