Magnolia sieboldii

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

We have a Magnolia sieboldii that is at least 4 yrs in the ground. It's approximately 10' tall by 6' wide with good healthy growth. However, we have yet to get a bloom from it. We have planted numerous cultivars of other Magnolias and all bloom as would be expected. We are experienced gardeners and know that we are not doing anything 'wrong' but it's frustrating because it just won't bloom. We are not over-fertilizing it, thereby getting excess foliage, etc. It has good sun/shade exposure, we're in Zone 6a. We're wondering if perhaps the flowering buds get blasted in the winter months? However, we never see flower bud formation as you do with other Magnolias. Anyone have a similar experience?

I've had M. sieboldii for 6 years. It was about 3 feet tall when first purchased ; now it is 7 feet X 7 feet. I must admit, it has bloomed every year, even when it was only 3 feet! I'm in zone 5b, so would be colder than you...plus we get sooo much wind in winter, if blasting was a problem (which it can be on M. stellata and kobus in my area) I;d never see a bloom. They do not produce an obvious flower bud for overwinter as they don't bloom until June-July (at least in newfoundland)...put it this way, they bloom well after they leaf out. My shrub gets mostly full sun, pH of soil is about 6, and I fertilize very little. For Newfoundland, M. sieboldii is actually one of the most reliable! Go figure. Sorry I can't explain what the problem could be. Here's a pic from mine this year (sorry if I'm inflicting pain).
