Kristi, I've never seen a paper rice plant that big! I've gotta try one of those, too.
I don't think I've seen anyone mention it so I'll congratulate Root for getting his picture on picture forum of the day!
Terrie
Hey, mine is not that big yet! :) That is awesome! Love the pic too. I wonder if mine will get that big next year? The year after??? I wonder if I can just keep that cat out of it this year. LOL
Kristi, the rice paper plant is hardy for you??? Call me jealous! I didn't know that. Your castings are cool!
I think she might have trouble falling for that one Rootdoc!
Geez, I've never even heard of a rice paper plant. I love that leaf shape. Made an awesome cement piece.
Sure Root we believe you. All you have to do is get permission to bring it inside. LOL Ted
Root, what big ears you have . . .
datdog, Rice Paper Plant has been on my want list for a long time. They have it in our Botanical Garden so I know it will survive here but I have never seen it in a garden center. If you have 'tons of it', maybe we can work out a trade? PLMK LindaSC
RootDoctor how long did it take your plant to get this size? If it doesn't grow to fast I may have to get me one.
Also please rootdoctor I would like the name of your plant.
This one is Xanthosoma sagittifolium,I started it as a bulb this year,so they grow pretty quick.
Can anyone tell me more abt ricepaper plant? Does it have another name? Where can it be found? Never heard of it. Like the leaf shape.
I'm starting to look now. If I find it and get it started my husband may throw me out. It is really a very nice plant, and do you use only premier pro-mix? I can't find it anywhere around here, the closes is KC.
I had been using Scotts, but with the volumne I go through, this big bag of Pro mix worked out nice,I just did a search, you are down by the Ok border,if you don't find one, maybe this spring I can fix you up.
Sounds good to me, I hate to order it because shipping would be terrible. I just found a xanthosoma sagittifolium on EBay. It is three ft. tall. Are you going to cut yours back for the winter, I have been looking and some are telling to cut back. I think I am going to make a bid on the one on ebay.
DATDOG is there another name for the Rice Paper Plant?
Here you go 2pugdogs. Tetrapanax papyriferum
Thanks alot Shelly221.

This is the only place I could find, maybe more will come along with ideas.
Thanks Shelly I've not been on the computer much.... 2pugdogs- If I have extra in the spring your welcome to a start. Right now the root system is too large. This plant form runners. It can be purchased at http://www.plantdelights.com/Catalog/Current/page66.html The foliage on my plant is much larger.
FYI, if you don't know already. Click on the photo of each plant on the website datdog listed, you'll get a much larger picture & the plant info. Hope this helps,
Gemila
i need to find Xanthosoma sagittifolium-tell me where to look~~~~~~
QueenB - you're supposed to park the kid in front of it... LOL or maybe 2 or 3 kids with a plant that size!!
What is the difference between Xanthosoma and Alocasia?
Hi Linda,
Aroids can sometimes be pretty tough to differentiate unless you are a botanist.
Beyond saying Xanthosoma and Alocasia are different Genus, I think they are originally from different parts of the world. Xanthosoma are native to South America and I believe Alocasia are native to Southern Asia.
I can usually tell Colocasia from other Elephant Ears; but, getting the Alocasias separated from the Xanthosomas can be tough.
Erik
oops, typo.

Thanks reminds me I have to dig and bring in mine and soon. Sure wish I had that closed in porch you got there, would sure make my life easier, especially when I pull up the majestic palms. Perhaps I should ship them your way for the winter LOL!
Gumlla, I just love your Xan in the picture you posted.
Especially like the way the leaf's ribbing/veining goes off in a different direction on each of the top lobes.
RootDoc
I just wanted to let you know that "the girls" are settling in just fine. They had a bit of "jet lag" (lost a few leaves from traveling in that trailer, but I have new leaves now and even managed to keep a few buds or seed pods through the whole trip. Thanks again and hope you didn't get the freeze that we did last night although no damage was done to my plants in the yard......guess winter is going to come this year after all....Janet
