I went to a kitchen/bath place w/ a friend the other day. she is looking for a new kitchen double sink. I need a new sink but not right now $$. Well, there was a guy there who was looking at the same sink as us and mentioned he is replacing his 1 yr old kitchen sink because they are installing granite counter tops. He said he plans to sell it on ebay. UH??? the cost of shipping a used sink? I told him I may be interested. It is a kohler exec. chef self rimming double white. The current retail $355. I overheard him telling the salesman that it has a scratch. He just emailed me inquiring if I am still interested. He lives in Portland, OR just 20 min from me. What do you think my top $ should be? I was not going to go over $100. But think even less is reasonable? Thank you all you bargain authorities.
price a used sink
Mmm ... seems that just 20 minutes away .. is just too TOO close .. to risk
passing up a possible golden opportunity .. to at least go look at it !
Inquire as to what price he is currently asking for it .. and if his price comes somewhere
within your budget - you know yourself, you're at least interested at this point! Naturally... no commiting,
even verbally ... until you follow up on on making the appt to go to see it !!
Check the sink thoroughly, and make your own determination about the supposed scratch,
and make what you feel is a worthy 'offer' .. Just see what flies after that.
But at any rate .. I wish you the best !!
I think you should go look at the sink and see how you like it. To some people, it wouldn't be worth a nickel if it has a highly-visible scratch in it. Others wouldn't mind. If the scratch isn't noticable and doesn't bother you, $75 -$100 sounds like a very reasonable offer for a used sink. Plus the guy wouldn't have to pay any Ebay and Paypal fees and box up and ship the thing if you bought it directly from him.
Also, plan to do something fun in Portland while you are there, so the trip isn't a total loss, in case you don't like the sink or don't like his price.

Depends on the sink. Cast iron Kohler sinks are great and I'd pay more for them than porcelain on steel or even a really good quality stainless steel (hard to come by... too many cheapies out there). I've seen Kohler cast iron sinks for as little as $25 used and in good condition, but not in a very popular color.
Can't scratches be repaired? I seem to remember doing that many years ago. Wasn't great results, but surely the products have improved by now. And him shipping a cast iron sink would NOT be cheap to the buyer, which would lower it's value on ebay I would think.
I would check in out, as already said; and definately have some fun stuff planned. I don't think he will get many bids on e-Bay-due to the packaging (unless he can wrap it himself!!) and shipping charges. You also could check e-Bay and just see what stuff is going for. We have a place in town, where builders bring stuff that they cannot use..I AM going to get there soon..also have a sink to replace.
Good luck.
I am going to make an appt to go see it. going on the assumption that it is a small scratch and in good shape my price will not exceed $100. BTW, at the retail outlet the salesman, a young man, overhearing our discussion re: purchasing a used sink, was flabergasted that anyone would "purchase someones old plumbing" and not just "pay the extra $250" for new.
ha .. That's this lil fellas 'commission' talkin' there !! ...
Call him! Go .. and have fun!!
Best wishes on the sink - that it will be what you're wanting, the scratch will be so vague you've
gotta 'look' fer it .. and he only wants $75 for it .. and you offer $50 and he bites ! ! ! .. hee hee

I am not a good barterer. wish a few of you guys were here and I'd drive you. Then we could do lunch.
did you go look at the sink yet? and what did you think?
No Pebble, I have not gone to assess the sink. I just emailed him last night to let him know what my price range limit was so if he has dreams of more $ I won't waste my time. If he tries to get more then $100 and doesn't he can always email me again. Waiting for his reply.
anastatia .. Just checkin' .. and wonderin' .. to see how things went - if, at all ? ... - mags
We just sold the original metal cabinets from our kitchen, plus the countertop -- Everything but the kitchen sink, LOL.
Yay ! ! ! .. GOOD .. for ya guys gw! ..
I've just went and visited your website the other day, to take a look-peek at your pics, of those ol' vintage metal cabinets !! Quite a variety of them!
Looked like a lil sanding and some re-painting and a replacement counter top .. would've certainly put 'em in tip-top shape!!
Sure you guys have gotta be some kind of pleased ... And, am certainly very happy fer ye!

I drove over to the guys house Friday to look at the sink. Heck, he hasn't even taken it out of the kitchen yet and won't for another 3 weeks!!!! I gave him a $75 quote and he hemmed and hawwed & kept telling me "this is a really good sink". Finally, I gently said "there really isn't much of a demand for used sinks" so he OK'd $75. Walked my friend and I to the door and told me what a great deal I was getting. It was getting weird. . .like he was parting w/ some old family jewel. Then as we are getting into car he says " I have another good sink you may want" from replacing this 1 year old sink. It is a 3 year old sink. I told him if he wants "to throw it in w/ the other" and left. He is suppose to call me when his granite arrives and the sink is pulled out.
Alrighty then !! .. Do you feel like it was worth the trip tho' ? What about the scratch - can live with it?
Were you utterly disappointed when you saw the sink ? .. Or, do jes feel somewhat 'taken for a ride .... ?
Albeit a bit premature for we're waiting your reply.. (and although it's still IN the counter top @ HIS place!) Just from my view from on this end of things .- it 'sounds' like you did okay!

Magpye et al, Yes, I did OK. The scratch was minimal and I am not sure I would have noticed it had not Kate, my friend, overheard him refer to the scratch in conversation w/ salesman. It retails from $270 - $335. I had only seen the $330 price in one shop but on Friday saw it for $270 in another retail outlet. Glad I did not stick with my original $100. Now to get a deal on a faucet. My gosh those things are $$$$!!
That was a great price. Hopefully he doesn't have any problems removing it.
We purchased a new sink and faucet last year, they were really expensive, together more than the new stove. But, I figured I will never have to replace them again and they have a life time warranty. And, if we move, I have no problem removing and replacing with ones not so nice.
The sales person thought I was nuts because I took my gardening basket in with us and had to make sure that it would fit into one side of the sink so I can just bring the veggies in and wash them in the basket in the sink. Works great and I love it.
Good faucets are relatively expensive, but having lived with cheap and not-so-cheap faucets, I would say it's one of those items that you get what you pay for. I have a Delta pull-out sprayer kitchen faucet, and I love it - worth every penny of the $175 or so I paid for it four years ago. (I wouldn't pay $400 for a designer faucet, but I wouldn't cut corners and buy a $39 model one, either.) You can always try to find a discontinued/overstocked model on eBay, but even if you pay full-retail, you'll have saved quite a bit on the sink, and a good faucet will be a pleasure to use for a looooong time ;o)
Yep, I too .. can certainly attest to the (cheap $39) kitchen faucets. We've been in our 'new' home .. for all of 7 years .. and have already put in our 3rd kitchen faucet! But the one we have currently .. was in the $80 - $100 range ... So far, it's holding up quite well. When/if this one goes
defunct tho' - I'm definitely gonna look more closely .. and be prepared to pay more.
Ha .. the 2nd sink, too btw!! .. But our kitchen sinks are subjected to some tuff stuff - with gardening, chemicals, and grand & grt grands washing dishes and getting baths in them too! .. hee
Edited .. to fix a some text boo-boos! hee hee

The apartment I'm moving into has a cheap stainless steel double sink, very shallow... and an even cheaper faucet. There's no way I could get a spaghetti pot in there to wash, much less my big canner. Guess I will be in the market for a good used sink and maybe spring for a high curved-neck faucet.
gw .. is that a lil shot of you guys' .. new counter tops, etc. ?
Ahhh, mitey purtee blue !!!!!!!!
That's my MIL's countertop - we bought the same sink and faucet for our kitchen, but it was easier locating the shot of my MIL's since we documented the remodel.
ok .. gw, I see
(my apologies, anastatia .. I've not intended to risk hi-jacking your thread)
Please, continue to keep us updated on your 'sink seeking success story' .. hee

GW, that's the one - or pretty close to it. I love the fact I can set my canning kettle next to the sink, fill'er about half-way up, and scootch it to the stove without excessive sloshing or strain on my back (lifting it out of the sink is not fun!)
hi-jacking my thread? this is all sooooo good for my efforts at humility reminding me once again that I am not the center of the universe.
How can you be at the center of the Universe if I am?... LOL.
darius, you are obviously delusional!
LOL!
[bump]
anastatia .. Merely curious ...
From October 4th ..
Ref: ' He is suppose to call me when his granite arrives and the sink is pulled out. ' .. and ..
Ref: ' Now to get a deal on a faucet.' ...
Did ya ever get the call, to come fetch the sink ? .. Or, you perhaps decided other wise .. or found something better ? .. ... Also, hows the faucet shoppin' comin' along ? Please let us know ... soon .. ok ? hee

AND we want a picture!!! Let the moths out of your wallet for a good faucet, the cheapies aren't worth the powder to blow them to...well, you get the picture. The one our builder put in is ok, but I'm still lusting for the Delta....but then what would I do with the hole in my nice Kohler sink that accomodates the sprayer?? (Oh, never mind, I know, just leave the sprayer thingy in there. We could have water fights in the kitchen......)
I would have chuckled at seeing a sink on Ebay until yesterday. I was looking up info on showers and baths and actually say a clawfoot tub for sale in Michigan but you have to pick it up. Wouldn't you love to see the postage on that one??
You can put a soap dispenser in the other hole, Meezers! We have one and it's so handy. :) And if you already have a soap dispenser, make the other one a lotion dispenser. Problem solved!
Super idea! Now all I have to do is convince DH that a four year old faucet that works fine needs replacing....wanna help?? LOL
Yes, I did get the sink, just last week end. $75 one tiny scratch. It is in my garage waiting for the inspiration to get started on painting our dark worn wood (once beautiful)cupboards, replacing 30 year old white formica w/ ?, etc. I am really grateful for the sink and how the deal turned out. Ya know how I found it was such a fluke that I keep hopin' that such a fluke will present itself re: faucets. $350 faucet for $75 used for 1 year. I am going to have to pull this kitchen update off w/ little $. I quit dreaming of granite etc counter tops. I saw a kitchen in a book with "solid core laminate" which means the color is all the way thru and eliminates the dark line seen on the edge, are you following me? And my friend Kate wants me to take the cupboards that face the dining area down so the small kitchen open up to dining room. Remember, this is a 1940 cape cod house. I would loose some upper cupboards but she insists with installing those pull out drawers in my ceiling to floor cupboard I would increase efficiency. That is another subj I would love to discuss w/ you highly organized people. Making kitchen space efficient. Advise me til you can't type anymore. Thank you for your advice and help. You guys are keepers!
The solid surface counters are really neat, but so pricey. We figured we could replace laminate counters ten times for what we would have paid for the same solid-surface. That way we can update the counter easily for a quick change of color, too.
Drawers are *wonderful* in a kitchen. I really miss the two big drawer units we lost by incorporating the range and a dishwasher into our configuration. Still I would not change a thing!
Remember on the colored laminate not to use a 'scratchy scrubber'...use one like you would for Teflon if you've got something that needs scrubbing. It will forever mar your countertops if you use the wrong scrubber...got a good friend who is heartbroken about her beautiful burgundy tops that show every scrub mark ever made on them.
We don't plan on scrubbing them (hahahahaha!), but if we do that's great to know. So, a sponge with a gentle scrubber on the other side would be good?
That would be fine...I use one of the blue scrubber/sponge combo on my tops...there's always a bit of something that gets missed. My tops are white though....and I can use bleach on them if something stains(mustard)
