This is my first brug- and as you can see, it turned out to be a winner. Over 100 blooms opened during its second flush. Almost worth the 15 gallons of water a day. Next year, this rascal is going in the ground!! I've really enjoyed it, and I have a couple of its babies in the ground already.
Aurora the Magnificent
Awesome picture. Bet that smells good at night.
Amazing picture!! Now that is a flush!!!!!
Wow, thats a beautiful brug tree. I wish mine were as big and flowerful as yours. You've done very well.
Totally awesome flush of blooms!
Are you saying that in Zone 7a you are able to get Brugs to over winter outdoors? What light exposure are you giving them? Do you get snow or ice storms during the winter?
Wow that is one awesome sight!
Just beautiful....
Could you tell me, when did you get it and how big was it when you got it?
What else did you do except water?
Thanks, Margie
WOW!!!!! Awesome!
Thanks everyone for the kind comments. Brugs have overwintered here covered in lots of mulch-pine needles etc. and with a lot of luck. For the last few years, it has not gotten down below zero here-very near it, but around zero, and I guess we've just been lucky. My friend has overwintered three plants successfully for two years. We'll see what happens this year. When I got this plant, it had 3 prongs about 18 inches long from one central trunk which was about 24 inches tall. It has grown and grown to be a monster. I feritilize it with Miracle Gro every 3 days, and it's also had osmocote, and aluminum sulfate in a tiny amount. I also gave it a good dose of epsom salts a couple of times.
very nice flush!! I like the statue too!
What a beautiful display. It has rewarded you for all your hard work in taking care of it.
Oh gosh!! Thats amazing!
Very, very nice!!
Do you recall who named it Aurora?
Thanks so much for telling us about your gorgeous "Aurora the Magnificent". I hope you don't mind if I ask you a couple of more questions about over wintering your Brugs outdoors, since we both live in Zone 7a. I'm just totally fascinated that tropical trees can survive cold temperatures for a prolonged period of time.
Are you growing your Brugs in acidic soil since your mulch heavily with Pine needles? Do you mulch year around with Pine needles? What is the reason to use aluminum sulfate? Does your friend cover her Brugs to protect them from ice and snow weighing to heavily on the branches or does she cut her Brugs down before Winter sets in? Are the Brugs growing in shade, part-shade, part-sun or full sun?
Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your thread.
Now that's a Brug! It's beautiful!
Awesome .... great photo!!!
Wow, lots of beautiful blooms.
Very nice plant!! :-)
The soil where I live is very acidic, but the soil I used in the pot for the brug was about half sand, 1/4 potting soil, and 1/4 composted cow manure mixed with my own compost. My friend cuts the brugs in the ground back to about two feet tall, and then just throws the loose pine needles all around the base until it's about 18 inches tall. She uses this primarily just to keep the roots warm. As I said, I think we've just been lucky that they've lived-if it gets cold enough, they'll go. We also didn't have much ice last year, but we had quite a bit of snow. I used aluminum sulfate (about 1/2 teaspoon) mixed in 5 gallons of water because it is a powerful fertilize that will burn plants quickly if you use too much. I forgot that I also use Superthrive every month also. My brug was having lots of its leaves turn yellow and fall off back in the first week of August. The combination of the alum. sulfate, epsom salts, and osmocote (the second round of osmocote) seems to have given it a burst of energy and it hasn't dropped leaves in about a month and is making many more buds. This brug has never stopped blooming. During the first flush, it had over 100 blooms also, and it has never had less that 20 blooms all summer long. It has been blooming continuously since May 28th. It received full sun for about 7 hours a day, then very bright shade until dark. I have a baby brug in the ground that gets only about 4 hours of direct sun a day, and it has about 15 blooms on it. It is only 27 inches tall. I'm still learning about brugs so if I don't kill it before frost I'll be lucky. lol I hope some of this info help you, Shirley. Thanks for your interest.
Dang...what a beauty! I wish I had that monster growing in my yard! How many people stop by to ask about it?
what an incredible site. You have the magic touch
Oh my goodness! That is one gorgeous plant! It makes me want one even that much more! I'm just gonna HAVE to find a way to get a brug over here!
-Julie
Oh thats lovely. Wish I could get one to bloom like that. I have 2 brugs for 1st time I was tickled pink with 10 blooms.
Holy Cow - t hat is one great bloomer. I think I need a hunk of it here just to see if it will bloom for me!! LOL I' m incredibly jealous!!!! Beautiful...
WOW WOW WOW I can hardly believe my eyes at the amount of blooms that plant has, I have a LOT of starts in a mini greenhouse in my computer room, I hope I just get 1 that will do good and give me blooms. Congratulations
What a great success story. Your Aurora is just gorgeous. Thanks for posting and good luck to carrying it over winter. Donna
WOW!!! What a beautiful sight!
Fantastic! Wish we could all have that many blooms on ours.
Wow!!!
That is gorgeous! Congratulations on all those blooms! A huge plant in such a small container... Thanks for sharing the picture!
It's beautiful ! This is my first year with Brugs and I apparently didn't feed them enough. I've had 3-4 blooms off and on this summer. They are getting full sun 5-6 hrs per day and bright light other time. The clay pots dry out so easily so I water often. Not sure what I can do next summer but I'll be on DG looking for advice.
Congratulations!!!! I too have my first ..I live in southeast mo. so many people here even leave their dahlias in the ground. My brugs are so beautiful ,, 6 ft. tall and two are close together from one planting.. then lo and behold the wind broke the top off one. !! ...the other has ten beautiful blooms..and I have 4 pink ,,just pods ;: such a late start blooming...I got them late from a catalog...12 inches..... yours is truly an example of the importance of fertilizing constantly.. I heard a wise gardener say "fertilize every week while blooming" that's a lot of fertilizer and can get expensive when you have as many flowers as I have ..but it is true....everyone including the local successful farmers want to know my secret...a farmer wanting to know my secret....duh.............good dirt....good weather and fertilize .....a lady at wal-mart told me yesterday to be sure and put epsom salt with the bone meal when I plant my bulbs...I try anything when I hear it..... YOU HAVE A GIFT AND HAVE BEEN BLESSED..GREAT JOB! What other successes I wonder that you have had???!!!

Thanks to everyone for such lovely compliments. I can't tell you how much they mean to me. It has been hard to keep that huge plant watered every 4 to 5 hours, but it sure has been worth the effort when it does this. I enjoy DG so much, and hearing from all of you has been a great joy. I am going to do my best to overwinter this plant in my garage. Who knows if I'll have any luck. I can only hope.
WOW!!!! LGW728.....that is one fantastic brug!!!
WOW! Just beautiful...
How ols is your plant?
Do you leave planting outside in winter?
Yumiko-I just bought the plant from a nursery back in March-it was only about 24 inches tall when I bought it, and I believe it may have been one year old.
Although the pot does not look big compared to the plant, it holds about 200 pounds of soil, and if I can wrestle it into my garage (after cutting it way back), I'm going to try and leave it in the garage over the winter. I have one of this plants babies in the ground and it is also covered in blooms. I am going to cover the one in the ground with mulch and hope it will live. I'll have to wait till spring and see!!
It's just beautiful!
What kind of pot do you have it in? I've found that clay pots dry out very fast and now only use plastic. One year I had one that I couldn't keep watered so I put a tiny nail hole on the side and at the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket and would sit the bucket near the base of the brug and fill it with water as well as water the brug at the same time. The water from the bucket would trickle onto the brug roots and keep it from wilting all day. Otherwise, I probably was doing like you.....spending lots of time dragging the garden hose and praying for a rainy day so I could get away for a while.
LGW728
One year!
DId you give them streroid or something?LOL
Your care and soil must be special.
Plants looks very happy.
I must admit I don't see how it got so big and has so many blooms in one year. But you apparently fed it everything, lol.
