Well, certainly glad to be here, thank you. And yes, quite a few months don't give us a lot to talk about when it comes to gardening, eh?
And happy that you have figured out where you can find the formula. I was going to suggest calling the building science department of the closest U.
But even happier that you're interested
Environmental improvements are kind of a hobby-horse of mine. When I put the extension on the house, I made a flat "green" roof that has plants that are filling in nicely - though I will be posting a couple of things on the Unidentified forum I think.
I have wild strawberries, 'pinks', thyme and a few things that I forget what the names are but know they were planted, and a few things I can't remember planting and don't know what they are.
Just gotta get my camera up there.
From Fire to Rebirth...my Parent's house
Cybercrone you are going to LOVE Inanda from Winnipeg.......she shares a number of similiar interests to yours. Not saying a lot of us don't but she, like you, does what she says.
I posted some of the pics of my roof garden on the "Welcome Cybercrone" thread.
What do you think?
It's the only 'cottage' I can afford
Still a number of finishing touches to do.....the kitchen also has glass French doors (not in pic) which adds a lot more light. The house also has 3 light wells......they bring in an incredible amount of light (esp the one in the basment). Lynn I'll try to get a pic of them next time.

Looks wonderful. I know it nust have been a long struggle.
That it has been Darius and it will be a while yet before the dust settles (as I'm sure you are also in the midst of ;). DH and I are busy now putting together shelving units for them(instruments of torture) like the one in my childhood bedroom, sanding the floors in the two bedrooms (where the original flooring wasn't burnt) and eyeing what of theirs can be moved over soon. Of course after will be emptying the house they are in and preparing it for selling.
Next year their yard will need major work......large vehicles really did a job on the grass/gardens and sections of the backyard fence will have to be rebuit.
I really think tho, with Dad's recent battle with cancer, that this helped him fight it.......he sure wasn't ready to give up with all this going on.
This has been a labour of love/hate I'm sure. Great to see more pictgures of what's happening now that they are getting closer to being back home again.
Great progress, great results! I love the window over the kitchen sink. What a wonderful place for plants in the sunshine!
Pati
Hi Pam, It seems to me that you had a posting on the fire and after-effects last year or so and it's easy to see that a lot of progress has been made since then. I can appreciate that an undertaking such as this has such a positive effect on your Dad. Good for him!
What a great kitchen - green with envy here - :)
I for one, will be looking forward to the final update. Hope it's soon.
Joan
Linda (MG99) you've got that right. ;)
Pati that is Dad's plan (re plants).......he wanted a larger Bay window but with the unplanned need to renovate ASAP not all quite was done as he specified. They LOVE the size of the kitchen however and they are busy building a temporary island until a larger one is made.
I agree Joan.........when he was having really bad side effects from the radiation it was tough going but he knew he had to keep it up (looking for what he wanted installed helped). :) Like you (and esp them) I'm soooooooooooooo looking forward to seeing it done too! Must admit I'm a wee bit green over the kitchen as well (wonderful # of cupboards/space and a nice sized pantry in the corner too).......I think I'll start watching for porcelain tiles on sale (or the other ones they had installed). I might be able to afford having the bathroom tiled sometime (sure not holding my breath on my kitchen floor......at least not for a number of years ;).
Dad really wanted Oak cupboards but with new plumbing needed (he had the newer clear plastic pipes put in), furnace (96% effecient) with air exchanger (loses some effiency there tho), and all new windows on the main floor (fire department will break them all) etc., etc., etc. he decided to spend the money on items that were money smart. Must admit it was amazing seeing some of the newer items that I've just seen on Holmes on Homes being installed.
Sounds like he really got involved Pam. How is he doing now?
Joan
Joan he still feels some discomfort from the burning the radiation did to his esophagus but he feeling is much better now (in the latter stages of treatment, and for a number of months after, the onset of the intermittent pain would bring him to his knees). Food became his enemy for a number of months thus causing him to lose 75 pounds. Now an attack is more like a milder case of heartburn. His coloring is back and his stamina is getting better. :)
Too bad he had to go through that Pam, but glad to hear he's on the road back.
My Dad had radiation treatment on his throat/neck area and I well remember the discomfort that he was in - thin soups was about all that would go down and he too lost a lot of weight. But it passed with time and he could eat once again.
My very best to your Dad.
Joan (((hugs)))
Thanks Joan! Ü I'm sorry to read that your Father's experience was very similar :(......very bland/thin soups was what my Dad was also limiting himself to (at one point I purchased him nutrient drinks to try when I saw how quickly he was shedding the pounds).
((Hugs)) to you as well
Pam
Thanks for posting the updates. The original pictures were before I was a DG subscriber; so I didn't see them. So glad the rebuilding is nearly done and also happy that your father is doing better. Hope he continues to do so.
Ann
Thanks Ann :)
We went over to the house last night to admire their lovely new kitchen counter and now Dad is chomping at the bit to get the move started. He really wants to get my mother into her new/old house soon...she also has some health problems and I'm sure getting her home back will make a huge difference in her outlook as well.
