How far back do you want to go? Who really qualifies as a super-heroine? Someone like Joan of Arc?

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

absolutely, that's a great one, how does she dress again? that would be a perfect one for her to play, if we can get her looking like her

Seems lke the movies portrayed her dressed like a Knight (long white tunic over pants), complete with sword and shield. I believe her shield had a cross on it, as hers was a religious fight.

You could do a Google search.

How 'bout two women artists whose contributions constituted major milestones in the evolution of their respective fields:

Gertrude Jekyll for changing the idea of what is beautiful in the domain of garden design.

Helen Allingham for preserving a disappearing style of gardening through her watercolors - just ahead of wrecking balls and builders.

I wrote a partial description of their achievements elsewhere in the General Discussion forum, in the Digital Art thread, in the 9/19/04 post.

These women were not "decorative", nor were Allingham's watercolors (they were meant to be more of a historical record), but they broke out of "a woman's place" in a time when such things were rarely done, and garden design hasn't been the same since.

PS - and then there's Beatrice McFarlane, landscape architect of Dumbarton Oaks in Washington DC...

Bluespiral, I thought about Jekyll, along with Vita sackville-West (Sissinghurst) but ruled them out because her peers would have NO idea who they were.

I know there must be other historical women besides Joan of Arc but my mind is swiss cheese. When I came up with Annie Oakley, I knew it was time to quit, LOL.

(Zone 7a)

Darius, To tell the truth, I didn't think they would know who Jekyll, Allingham, Sackville-West, etc. were, either.

I know I'm being pesky, pedantic and irrelevantly perspicacious here, but I can't resist taking potshots at this boob-tube culture.

If we ever meet, Darius, we'll have to have our own dress-up - I'll be Jekyll, and maybe 'Shoe can be the pint-sized Lutyens, who joked about wheeling Jekyll around in a wheel barrow.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Bluespiral, I often take my pot-shots too. I'll have to decide who I want to be for "dress-up" LOL! No doubt someone obscure but with a great sense of wackiness.

(Zone 7a)

Darius, that would be ourselves - what did Pogo say, "We have met the fool and he is us"?

Mother Theresa

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

My favorite Pogo is Albert saying "Adults. Who do they think they is anyway?" and Pogo says, "Us."

I vote for Florence Nightengale (sp?) and Amelia Earhart (sp?) Frank (I reserve the right to spell thier names correctly later)

Good suggestions, Frank!

Good thing for those young ladies I'm not in charge of the homecoming. A party game called "Super Shrink" comes to mind. It could combine role-playing and problem-solving skills.

Someone could be Stephen King's troubled heroine, Christine, and then the others could be Dr. Joyce Brothers, Dr. Susan Forward, Dr. Ruth Westheimer and so forth. Mother Theresa would be a natural, along with all the aforementioned heroines.

The idea would be to explore all the different ways there are to cope with a bad day, with the Christine character the "advis-ee" and all the others the "advis-ers".

Waddaya think?

I was part of a new years eve game where a famous persons name is taped to your back. You can only guess who by asking yes or no questions. Mine turned out to be Christofer Reeve. My first thoughts were, not that poor man. however, the woman who got Madonna was most upset. "That's not me!"

Miss Manners

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Just found out that they have to be fictional characters, not true to life heros, but super heros kind of like power puff girls, that's a cute one, I liked the joan of ark one, till she shot it down LOL.

I Love Mrs. Pollifax!!! With Xena--there is always Gabrielle; Agent Gracie Hart-FBI (Miss Congeniality), Princess Leia or the newer Star Wars folk--the many ladies of Star Trek (7 of 9, Capt. Janeway etc), The returning Nancy Drew; Guinevere (?), Buffy, the Vampire Slayer and friends, the various witch characters on TV, Glinda, the Good witch from OZ, Samantha, from Bewitched (showing my age now!).then the various Greek, Roman and Norse goddess legends (might not be fun, unless they are into the classic myths though). The star subjects from Dark Angel and the one (cannot remember the show now, but Yancy Butler-the NY cop with the magic bracelet that has brought it's power through time-with women in her family line..
I like to watch non-fiction stuff.......LOL

Electra Woman and Dyna Girl! (For those of you who are old enough to remember the awesome Krofft Supershow that was on on Saturday mornings in the 70's!)

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

well, believe it or not, I think she's decided to go as rogue or storm on the xmen cartoon, LOL go figure. I said kim possible, cause it would be easy to dress like her, but she said there's too many going as kim. so be it LOL

thanks for alll the help

kathy

There's some great ideas here for Halloween costumes, and I've been looking for an idea for this year. Last year I was Morgana La Fey (King Arthur's step-sister), another year Bride of Frankenstein and on and on. (Been going to these parties for 12 years now.) Wish I could do Wonderwoman, or even Red Sonia, but don't think my chunky figure could swing it ...lol (I also thought that was a good movie!). Oh, and bluespiral, Steven King's "troubled heroine Christine" was actually a car - just in case you didn't know. Now Misery, that would be cool, I could do that-well, the Kathy Bates character anyway, got just the right figure too...

WONDER WOMAN!

(Zone 7a)

Hi Ceedub, I knew. I was toying with perspectives in relation to identity.

Bluespiral, I think I missed the perspective because it's also my name...lol.

(Zone 7a)

Ceedub, Kathy Bates' figure in Misery has been the romantic ideal in times gone by.

Take the marriage ceremony in Tunisia, as written about by David Fairchild in The World was my Garden. During the late 19th to early 20th centuries, he was a botanic hunter for economically useful plants and some of his travels took him into North Africa. When the match was decided, the groom's family would give bracelets to the future wife's family. She had to wear them on her ankles. She was fed a diet of honey and fenugreek, and when she fattened up enough that her ankles filled the bracelets, she was ready for marriage.

Personally, I would rather be a misfit in a culture that reveres skininess than a good-fit for those ankle bracelets in Tunisia.
