Morning Glory

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

I received MG seeds, can I sow those now or in spring? If I sow now then in winters, plants will die?

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

here in the usa its best to sow in the spring. as i have tried to over winter some and they never make it. since thay are annuals any ways its best to wait till spring unless you have warm weather year round.

Thank you. Is this vine die in winter ?

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

yes they will die in the winter time. they seed greatly so you will have seeds but here the die and dont come back. seeds are very easy to start though.

Thank you very much, It means better for me to sow in the spring.

gumlla, there a some that are annual and some perrennial morning glories too. I don't want to confuse you, but there are some that form a tuber and will live for more than a year. I know that the ones I sent you are annual, so they need to be planted when the danger of all frost is past. You know, I throw some into the ground sometimes at the end of Jan/Feb and they come up as long as there is moisture in the ground. But, if you have only a few seeds, it is best to soak them overnight and then plant them where you can take care of them.

Thank you very much, your detailed reply satisfy me.Today I soak the seeds of cup and saucer, Hycinth Beans and Coral vine seeds. Is it okay, I mean can I sow now or these will also in Feb.?

Oh Boy, if you are like me, I sow seeds all year round, but in the winter, I use lots of lights and heat mats, and a room or area where they can be protected. Do you have a greenhouse or room/enclosed porch where you can start them now? If not, I would wait till Feb to start them indoors, on a kitchen window or something. I use my sewing room in the winter and use a shelf with several lights. I can take a photo of it and e-mail it to you if you want.

Great ideas, yes I want to see the photos.

Okay Kaleem, you asked for it.. here are some pictures I took this morning. The area is not clean completely.. it is so full of dust.. I carve (woodburn also in there) so I leave the windows open to get the smoke smell out, but then the dust comes in).

Here you can see the white PVC piping (that is what the shelf is made out of), and then lights are hung from that. You can also see the plastic domes that I have ready for this coming winter. I start saving supplies all year long..lol. I should call this the sowing room instead.

The lights above give the light needed for the top shelf, I just move the pvc around and also those metal shelves have wheels so I drag them around too. This is one side of the room.

Here is photo 2. A closer shot of the PVC piping, I just use thick cardboard on top of lights to place trays. They do fine, they do get wet, but I just replace at the end of the season. On the top, I have some lightweight plastic and put taller plants up there and on the floor.

#3 this is the other side of the room, there are two windows and I use these on flats that need natural light if there is some and also gets some good warm sun for the seeds, if I dont' have enough heating mats, this works really well.

#4 closer shot of the dome trays. This year I am going to try more passionvines, this time I will use a dome, and try to root cuttings in the other domes.

#6 this is one of the metal trays and I hung lights on the second shelf, the window provides light for the top.. I just wheel them around.

#7 up in those boxes are my heating mats. I store them there for the summer. That house you see crochet, I made that about 9 years ago. And guess what? My house that we bought 4 years ago, looks just like that. Only we changed the fence this year.

Kaleem,
Here is one of my other friends, this is Harley... I am going to spray those pigs, they are piggy banks but instead of dumping them, I am going to spray them and fill them with sand, then put them out in the garden if they look ok..

You have quite a setup there for growing. Wish I had a place for something like that.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow, Gourd, quite a setup you have there. It looks great.

Thank you guys for the compliments. Boy I sure do miss sewing. I haven't had a chance to do that at all the past two years. This room is behind a recently built detached garage, it is fairly close to the our house, maybe 100 feet. After discovering that I could grow seeds and root things, well, it seems thats been the priority here..lol.

You can basically make a one shelf unit, check out the propagation forum. There were neat set ups last year there, that is where I think I got the idea for the PVC rack. But, those metal shelves from costco have wheels and are so easy to move. Especially if you have a nice day, you can wheel them out side to get some fresh air and natural sun for the day.

Yours racks are beautiful and the setting of goods is fantastic, I have a kitchen, which we are not using these days, actually we have two kitchens .So I will make arrangements for containers in the kitchen. This arrangement will not be like yours, but First I will start with four containers. Hope will have good seedlings.
