I caught this huge, nasty looking fly yesterday on a trumpet vine flower, and after a trip to the refrigerator, it was quite a cooperative subject hehe.
The first pic is to show how big it is in comparison to my finger, pretty big for a fly.
CLOSED: Disgusting giant fly
Geez - I don't need any flies like that! We have plenty of the little biting ones here, don't need giant ones!
:-)
Actually he is a good fly, a tachinid fly.
Thanks Cala:-) They can have all the passiflora eating caterpillars they want.
Indigoez are the cats eating your passifloras to little nubs like they did mine? Incense couldnt' even grow fast enough to stay ahead of the cats! Lady Margaret seems to be holding her own now though.
Is that one of those chewing, blood sucker flies?
No, these are not blood suckers. They lay their eggs on caterpillars. The adults eat nectar I think.
Oh... so they would be welcome in my garden, if I ever have one.
If it wouldn't be so big & hairy, it wouldn't be disgusting. It is probably very handsome to a fly of the opposite gender. LOL.
