Direct sowing of perennial seeds in the fall?

Pickering, ON(Zone 5b)

I have read this forum from the start to finish and it has given me some great information on seeding in the fall.... The boxes with wire over the top is a great idea....I am going to sow some seed this fall. It will be my first attemped. With the imformation you have all supplied I am sure it will be successful.....

Thank you all

Yes, my husband has already volunteered to make me some of those boxes. They will be very helpful for seeds that take awhile to germinate. With the boxes they won't be disturbed.

Yeah, I'm kind of skeptical about the bulbs with the soil thrown over top but I guess if you got them too late, it's either force them or let them rot, or give it a try. I got all my stuff late and didn't get everything in the ground yet. I'll force the daffodils but I still have a bunch of tulips, crocuses, etc. Today was a cold wind so I ran errands instead.
I wish my hubby would make me boxes! I'm going to try cutting the top and bottom out of milk jugs and use those. I want hubby to finish the fence first anyway!

Would someone be kind enough to tell me why Durtcom is classed as a new member today???

Hmm.....
Ginny busily listening to all the silly ways Murricans will leave USA now. Best one was , buy an oil tanker and float around the world. That way you will always be welcomed wherever you go!!!

inanda - That is curious - I did "renew" my subscription yesterday. In September I originally just signed up for 2 months for $5 to check things out. Yesterday I renewed for a year. Does that make me "new"?

Susan

durtcom, sounds like they consider you new since you're now signed on for a year instead of just checking things out.

Anyway, no matter what happened, we're sure glad you signed up to be with us for a whoel year, dirtcom. This DG place is just too good not to invest the most time possible, right? :D

Ginny...you're funny... Murricans!! I love it though!!

Just wanted to report an update to this thread on my fall sowing experiment. Today I noticed that I have stuff sprouting from seed I direct sowed in the garden Oct 30th. I have a couple of Lupin sprouts and a bunch of Siberian Wallfower.

My first attempt at winter sowing is looking good also. I have the following sprouting:

Poppy, Shirley double
Poppy, Shirley mix (Papaver rhoeas Shirley single)
Poppy Surprise Mix
Lupins - Mix
Poppy 'Danish Flag' (Papaver somniferum)
Cornflower, mix (Centaurea cyanus)
Snapdragon, Baby (Toadflax) - Northern Lights
Golden Marguerite (Anthemis tinctoria)
Malva, Zebra (Malva sylvestris mauritiana)

I feel like spring has sprung!

Susan, I'm impressed--how cold did it get there this winter, and how much snow cover? Did you mulch?

Hey Weezi, where you been? Up to your ears in seedlings?

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Up to my ears, and more! I'm trying to get my taxes done and my transplanting is falling behind. It's anxiety time!

I winter sowed three things - prarie coneflowers, purple asters and lychnis. Nothing's come up yet for me. Still hoping.

Rosemary - It is possible that I just got lucky with this because we had a pretty mild winter and not a lot of snow cover. A few good dumps of the white stuff but with the chinook winds and crazy temperature fluctuations sometimes the snow doesn't hang around. Our winter landscape has been more brown than white. We did have a couple of cold snaps where the temps got down a bit below minus 30 but only for a few days and not for an extended period of time. I didn't mulch at all but found that when it did snow those little boxes seem to catch the snow and maybe provided some needed insulation and moisture.

I will be interested to see, now that there are some sprouts, what happens if (and more likely when) the temps plummet again in our crazy spring weather. I suppose I could cover the boxes but I think I will just leave them alone and hope that mother nature or the plants know what they are doing.

Susan, keep us posted--would sure save growing space in the house if those perennials could be started outside here.

Very encouraging news, Susan - thanks a lot. I agree, it's sure good to find out that some plants do ok sown outside in the fall - never enough room in the house this time of year. I'd be interested in updates too, whenever you have the time! :-)

Not much more to report except that the 2 things that sprouted survived a substantial wet snowfall on Thursday morning. I will let you know how things progess.
