It even looks good inside all winter.

I better get one for next year I guess..would be awesome in my tropicals. Thanks for sharing! Great idea.
:-)
Yeah! My picture made someones wallpaper. Thanks root. It's also special because my mom gave it to me. I'm guessing I had it for 5 years or so. The larger the pot, the bigger the plant will get.
Kristi, that is one awesome looking begonia. I'm not generally a begonia person, but I think I've got to find that one. I'm getting into coleus too and never before cared for them. I love them now. Maybe it has something to do with getting older. I like the easy care things. LOL! Great picture. Thanks for sharing.
I hear you Shirley this is why I love my perennials. I did the coleus thing a few years back. Too hard to keep over the winter for me. I'm challenged I guess LOL... My new thing this season is caladiums. I need to snap some pictures. I'm just thrilled with them.
Did you get some from the co-op? Mine look a lot better than I thought they would, but next year I'll have to put them where they get more light. Don't tell my DH, but I just had to go order this begonia. LOL!
Your bad! I'm telling.... LOL I didn't get any from the co-op I didn't think I liked them then. This is new, as in bought a ton of bags of them on sale for 75% off in June planted them and fell in love.
How do you keep the leaves from getting wet? Mine will survive but it looks awful from the leaves getting wet.
I killed mine last year but I loved it
I don't have good luck with begonias
Liz mine stays out all summer and there hasn't been a problem with the leaves getting wet. When I remember I just drop the hose over it. The only problem I have is I let the soil dry out all the time. CC this is the only begonia I can keep alive. Sorry you lost yours.
Obviously you're doing everything right Kristi.Your gardens look marvelous.
Kristi,I will go one better then wallpaper,my 17 year old DD saw it and asked if I would copy the picture so she could use it too!!!
i killed mine-hanging head in shame!
Beautiful begonia! That looks better than some I've seen at the Begonia shows! Way to go !

Now that is Escargot that I wouldn't mind having in the garden! The leaves in the picture look huge. Can you give us an idea of the actual size?
Yes, that is one stunning begonia, I have never seen that variety before. It is just breath-taking!
To the person who recommended water on the leaves: My late mother-in-law grew begonias quite well. She always said they like water on their leaves in the morning, but not the evening.

Love the way the edges swirls in..what a perfect name for it. A real beauty!
Georgeous Looker that escargot... might just try one ... although I'll have to grow them under something tall as the sun is too bright here... found it at Logees.com for 6.99.. small I'm sure .. but a start twards the stature of yours.. I'd passed on it as their catalog picture doesn't compare to yours.. thanks Gordon
Kristi, that is awesome! I had to add that to my wish list after I saw it! People always yell at me for not having much of a want list, but I want everything and don't want to bore anybody. LOL
Love it! I saw it in one of your other posts in the brug forum -- very neat looking begonia! I just got into them this year -- have several varieties of Angel Wings, and some plain old garden varieties, and I love them! I also love Caladiums -- have for years. I buy them every Spring at where ever I can find the varieties I want at the price I will pay LOL! And, mine are pretty much in full shade...
Ooh! A picture with an attitude - er, mood, I mean. Datdog, this makes wonderful wallpaper against which to read a nice, spooky short story from http://www.gutenberg.net/ Just be sure, if you try this, to “save” a book from that site as a “compressed zip file” to disk or file. Only the compressed zip form enables you to read a book in that 2" X 6" (approximately) ‘puter window in order to view it against wallpaper as you read.
The short story your photo reminds me of is “Rappaccini’s Daughter” in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Mosses from an Old Manse and other stories. I am going to develop this idea further in my post today in the Digital Art thread in the General Discussion forum. Having already posted about NASA’s mathematical link between hurricanes and snails, your photo makes it timely to do snails in art.
i'd seen pics before of this one and was never impressed....
after seeing this, I could definatly use a few in the ole fernery.
Eclipse/kyle, Agri-starts has these... might want to drop them a line.

datdog, you need to add your photo to the PDB. I went to have a look and none of them hold a candle to yours.
I agree with Brugie, I never cared much for begonia's until I saw your pic. Posted it as wallpaper so I could show dh. Now I want one.
By the way, PDB lists them to be only 6 to 12 inches, is that right? The pic sure makes it look a lot bigger.
datdog, do you keep your begonia in a pot outdoors or planted in ground? I know you said you bring in at wintertime, but just wanting to make sure. A day later I'm still thinking about about your gorgeous plant and getting myself convinced that I need another plant obsession. I even pulled DH away from his computer to look at this pix in my computer! LOL
Warmer area gardeners: do you grow begonia outside, inground? What do you do for winter protection, if any? There is a nursery in the Dallas galleria (North Haven) and they are really into begonias, the fancy kind. THey had a young escargot the last time I visited an although beautiful it did not compare to datdog's beauty. If I do pursue this obsession, I would definitely be visiting them lots!
I know people grow begonias outside, but I'm referring to the fanciful types, with fancy leaves and colors.

I was referring to North Haven Gardens off Central Expressway in the galleria area, not inside the galleria mall. sorry for misunderstanding.

Thanks everyone! My plant is now blushing. Root I feel like I'm really famous now... Wow!
Cherishlife I'll check it out. Thanks
Vossner it is in a pot and I have to bring mine in. Althought I do have several types of hardy begonias that winter over just fine. I'll snap some pictures for you later.
Amazing and gorgeous!
Wow, I just saw this. What a beautiful and unusual begonia!
Datdog, I didn't know there were any begonias that could be left in the ground in any zone lower than 9. Can you show us pictures of some of your hardy ones? And do you keep them in the ground or in pots?
Also, about your message above, "there is a nursery in the Dallas galleria (North Haven) and they are really into begonias, the fancy kind," do you mean they are in the Galleria Mall? I shop at Northhaven Gardens on Northhaven right off of Central Expressway in Dallas and I'm wondering if the Mall store is a branch store of the main nursery. I'll have to check into that and see what they have.
Again, your escargot is just beautiful!
Terrie
Very cool looking leaves. What a beauty!
That is a very beautiful plant. I have several fancy leafed ones but they don`t hold a candle to yours. I must have it.
I have a one-year-old plant with only 5 leaves...can't wait til it gets 5 years old like yours!!! Absolutely gorgeous, and you MUST post the picture to the plantsdatabase, please! What kind of fertilizer are you giving that plant? Should I repot mine to bigger pots frequently? Any advice to get your results will be appreciated by all of us admirers. Thanks for posting and congratulations!
Susan
I got my plants last week and need to move them into a larger pot now. I'm interested also in the answers to Susan's questions. Also, is that only one plant? If so.........I'm wondering if I can put two or three in one container if it is large enough. I've never grown a begonia in the house before. I hope my attempt isn't a complete failure. LOL!
