Deer protection for small trees?

wytheville, VA(Zone 6a)

Does anyone have a good solution for protecting small tree trunks from the deer using them to rub their antlers to clean off the velvet. This happens every fall and is quite distructive. Thank you for your help. Fred

Fred, if they are young saplings you can use the corrugated drain line, or leach line...cut it down the side, open it up and put it around the trunks. Might not look too wonderfull but it can be easily removed after "scrape" season.

Hello Horseshoe,
Thank you very much for you advice. I will give it a try.

Va sure has their share of deer, eh? Very populated up your way, icn2u! (Love your name, by the way!)

Only other thing I can think of is to spray egg solution on the trees...they can't stand that!

PS....deer season is in.

You might also want to try hardware cloth. Home Depot has it with a green, plastic coating that doesn't look too bad. I'm using it mainly for the #&*@!^#^&$ beaver, but it works equally well for deer.

I have pretty much tried every form of tree protection. There are some issues with the black corrugated drain tiles. I ultimately went with a vented Miracle Tube from Tree Pro. These tubes will help during rutting season and helped keep the rabbits from reducing my saplings to nubs throughout the year and definitely helped stop the deer from stripping bark. This is the product being used by many DNR's and this is the product being used by quite a few professional growers, conservationists, restorationists, as well as private homeowners such as myself.

I have also purchased these in the smaller 36" size and cut them in half with a sawzall to use them as protection for perennial plants and seedling shrubs. They have an 18" size available for sale but I felt like I got a bigger bang for my dollar by cutting them down to an even smaller size by myself. I picked up twist ties to attach them to a stake at either Menards or Home Depot.

I do not purchase TreePro's stakes in favor of using much more affordable bamboo.

My only regrets are that I wish I would have found this product before I lost literally hundreds of trees earlier this year. They only ship from the factory on Tuesdays I believe.

My husband is a hunter.....he claims human urine keeps deer away (they always go as far away from where they're hunting as absolutely possible) ...easy enough to try anyway! Get your friends.....fyi.....male urine is supposed to be better! Pleeeaaasse.....no pics! LOL
