The "W" Word

Guilford, CT(Zone 7a)

The days are becoming shorter, the shadows are steeper... it is coming - I can feel it! With Winter comes the sadness of seeing my beautiful annuals die. I just thought perhaps others in warmer areas may want some of my more tender plants to grow out their way, rather than let them die. Is there any demand for this? I have the basics: Coleus, Impatiens, Geraniums, and some plants that I will have to cut way back for, like Brugmansia & hybrid Begonia. Or am I just refusing to accept the inevitable? I would love seeds or bulbs for trade. This is my Momma Begonia 'My Special Angel" that will have to be cut WAY back.

Do you take cuttings from that and root them for next year, or do you just cut the plant back and keep it that way???

I am really new to trying to keep some of my annuals and I am trying to figue out the best way to do things.

Well what a dork I am, I just completely missed reading part of your post!!!!

What kind of bulbs are you looking for???? What kind of plants are you looking for???

JRush...that's a beautiful begonia. If it were mine, I'd be looking into wintering that plant over...or at least taking cuttings so I'd have it for next season. Last night I gave in and took, get this, ONE cutting from my yellow NonStop tuberous begonia. LOL I have several more in containers but the flowers are so beautiful, I just couldn't bring myself to snip even one branch. Guess I'll have to take that leap within the next day or so or I'll be risking not seeing my flowers at all until until next year.

If you're willing to trade (SASE for ) cuttings, I'd be interested in trying to keep a piece of "My Special Angel" over winter. Can't guarantee, but I'd be willing to try a slip and send it back in spring if I don't kill it. :-D

I would love to try some different brugmansias. What kind do you have or what bloom colors? I have a few crocosmia, daffodil, lycoris 'radiata' bulbs I could exchange.

Archer/Bronson, FL(Zone 8b)

Julie,

Do you have any inky fingers coleus left? I really love that plant you sent to me and would like some more. Begonia would be very nice as well.

I can send you some lilium bulbs. They are done blooming for this year. I left them at the old place but will go back to dig them up tomorrow if you'd like some. There's a variety of colors and types. I got them in the spring Lilium Coop this year.

LMK

Thanks,

JRush,

Your Begonia is beautiful, I already have too many but always want more varities, do you know the name of this plant?

Down here, the Angelwings winter-over very well if given protection. Do you have a porch with a roof that you could wrap in clear plastic. I am fortunate that I have double french doors leading to the front porch and we only use the back door.

When you cut them back I would like some cuttings of some, except the brugs. I will have plenty of cuttings of those.

Guilford, CT(Zone 7a)

Alice - I guess I am looking for anything new... I would love to try some Hostas, as I just have the plain green & 1 variegated. I love annual flower seeds, too. This Begonia can take at least 10 good cuttings to share... I also have small babies that are rooted & growing in my yard. This plant roots easily in peat moss, but not water. (a hard lesson this year) The seeds are sterile. Julie - If you want a rooted one instead of a cutting, I can send it to you. This one does very well in a bright window indoors & makes an attractive houseplant. Kooger- I would love geum, Allium Star of Persia, Centauria or Scabiosa. You'll have to let me know now many Coleus you would like...

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

JRush...I'd *love* to have a rooted cutting (I hope I'm the only "julie" who asked. :-)) If not, then...uh...I'll take one TOO! :-D Thank you!

Sending email now.

Guilford, CT(Zone 7a)

Country Bumpkin - I have Species that must be cut way back... a real show stopper. I would love some lycoris. Molly - I have SO many Inky Fingers! You have mail! Judy - this one is "My Special Angel." I kept it under lights last year, but it is so much larger now. It is just so pretty with its spotted leaves and graceful blossoms! I don't think it could handle our cold Winters here outside... I am so partial to French doors - the epitomy of Summer, to me. TA Rogers - do you want the Begonia, Coleus & Geraniums? I am so happy folks want to "adopt" these plants - they have much to offer yet, & I am glad others appreciate plants as much as I do. I cannot let ANYTHING die! To all - email me with addresses so I can get these out in the mail...

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

JRush - you have mail.

Kingston, GA(Zone 7b)

JRush--you have more mail. :)

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

What are the brugs you have? Did you get enough orange crocosmia? Not sure what else I have till I get out to weed.
Sandy

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Yes J Rush I want them. Have a brand new green house (Half of my Garage, that I added windows too) that is waiting for them. Will send postage required. Ted

(Zone 7a)

JRush, just caught your thread. Can you use cuttings of the following to overwinter for next spring?
Salvia 'Purple Majesty' - a rooted cutting planted after last spring frost here makes 6' tall bushy plants with long, velvety purple tubes that are in constant motion with hummingbirds.
Pineapple sage - grow it for fragrance of leaves - not much of its red flowers before frost here
Double impatiens - white
" " - variegated red-purple and cream flowers

I can send plants of following with soil washed off roots:
Hosta elegans - mislabeled by van Bourgandien; both are very glaucous blue, one monster the other small
Hosta 'Frances Williams'
Hosta subcordata (syn. H. plantaginea (spelling?) - this is the victorian hosta loved by Gertrude Jekyll with very long, white trumpets of intense perfume that blooms for several weeks for us. I think Ms. Jekyll referred to this as "funkia".

We have a wonderfully self-sowed carpet of snowdrops if anyone would like some

We have an abundance of seed of following:
Lobelia cardinalis
Clematis 'Polish Spirit', 'Etoile violette', 'Ernst Markham'

In exchange - I would love:
any night-fragrant brug not of the D. meteloides persuasion. White most, but other color fine
love dark red geraniums, I have pink ivy, other colors welcome
Begonia Special Agent
Coleus - Inky Fingers sounds gorgeous

Thank you JRush

I would love one, but I am not even going to ask after reading all of your responses. I just want to ask why you are cutting it back instead of just moving it into the house??? Those are house plants!!!

Jeanette

Guilford, CT(Zone 7a)

Errrgh - I forgot that I have 2 other Brugs to cut back - Peaches & Cream & Isabelle. Plus the Species. Sandy - the orange Crocosmias are still blooming & they are beautiful! I can't get enough of them. Let me know if you would like any Brug cuttings. Ted - I am green with envy. Some day, I hope to have a greenhouse too! I hate to see everything die back & leave nothing but brown all around me. I think I would live in it. Jeanette - I have so many plants that there is NO available window space in Winter. Many will lose their leaves anyhow due to lack of sunlight. The Brugs I place in dormancy for the season. Let me know what you are interested in! To all - email me with addresses...

Guilford, CT(Zone 7a)

Blue Spiral - I would love any Hostas you have to offer. I just have 2 varieties, & I am interested in more. Email me your address!

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

I have many hosta varieties. I always think of Granny when I see angel wings.
I have never raised it. Do you have a rooted piece for me?
Teresa in KY

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I'd like some of the Angel Wing Begonia too, rooted or not. You have mail. I'd like some coleus, too.

Yes, you have even more mail!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

And some more!! Jeanette

(Zone 7a)

And 2 more - one with plants and one with address - let's hope there's not a third asking if you've seen my glasses - LOL

Muscoda, WI(Zone 4b)

LOL @ bluesprial!! (Reminds me OF *me*!) :-D

~julie~

Guilford, CT(Zone 7a)

Teresa- I may still have a rooted Begonia- if not, it is easy to root in peat moss. This one is pretty tough!
To all - bear with me - I have a chronic illness that turns my mind to mush at times... I want to be sure I get everyone taken care of! I will be doing most of the Brugs & Coleus in a week or two as the weather becomes cooler. My Species is now in full bloom - cutting this plant back before the WInter is the hardest thing I have to do each Autumn. It does very well going dormant, but I think it hurts me more than it hurts the plant to do the nasty deed!

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

I could want until next spring.
Teresa

(Zone 7a)

Me too - don't be attacking anything with nippers on my account.

Guilford, CT(Zone 7a)

I have to cut all of these back anyhow, or let them die. The Brugs are placed in my cellar to go dormant for the Winter. The rest of the plants are placed in windows or under florescent lamps, but I can't fit them all in. I will take cuttings of the Coleus & Impatiens for next year, but the plants have to either go to a new home or die in the cold. I welcome all who would like some!

Homosassa, FL(Zone 9a)

JRush,
If still available, I'd love cuttings of the Brugs, especially the Peaches & Cream and Isabelle. I would be glad to pay postage, plus include a few seeds of 'Star of Persia' and also some bulbils of Peacock Orchid. I don't have many seeds of the 'Star of Persia' (they were given to me in a trade), but I only want a few to try, as I'm not sure they'll do well here in my heat anyway, so would be willing to give you the majority of them. I'm sure they'll enjoy your cooler zone much better.
I want to start a Brug Garden, and those two would be perfect additions to it.
LMK if you're interested.

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

What is a double white brug called?
Thanks

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Changed my mind I would like some show stoppers. Brugs that will turn your head. LOL Have double white, BL, EP, EW, VO and DS

Guilford, CT(Zone 7a)

Beth - you're on! Send me your address & I will add you to the list for cuttings.
Bluegrass- I think there are several varieties of double whites - mine is Species, which has large blossoms that last about 4 days. TARogers5 I have yet to see the blossoms from Peaches & Cream, but the Isabelle is really pretty. Species is my treasure - the blossoms are a foot long and nearly as wide. I also have a cross that I grew from seed, Jessie Noel x? that should be a variation of orange.

I have a friend that is very sick but still trys to garden. She had mentioned to me that she loves ATs. Can I root the sprouts off the trunk for her or should I cut off a branch? She was thrilled I mentioned giving her a start. Please help.
And of all things her neighbor's Pit Bull jumped on her and bite her last week.
She had a garden hoe and made it to the house. The dog had gotten out!
She has such a bad time. I would love to make her smile with these.
Teresa

Premont, TX(Zone 9b)

I would love some cuttings of the burgs if you still have some have all kinds of seeds and have some bulbs I can send

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Julie, I still need your address. I have your package ready to go. I know, I tried your email but you are so deluged that you don't have time. Jeanette.

Guilford, CT(Zone 7a)

Teresa - big duh for me - I don't know what an "AT" is! The Brugs, perhaps? I have tried to root some of the small sprouts off the trunk, with little success. The best ones are big cuttings... it seems the larger cuttings have a greater chance of rooting instead of rotting.
emh48- I think you will have to be the last one for Brugs! I will have to see what is left when I do the deed...I can definitely send you a Species. (and a rooted Jessie Noel cross if you would like one)
Jnette - I think emailed you...lol
Lots of emails from folks, but so nice that my plants will go to new homes. Thanks to everyone!
Sandy, Teresa, Beth - let me know if you are interested & email me with details...

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi, I read back thru the thread, I have hosta / daylilies that I can dig. They are my passion. Also I have some sedums/ yellow flag iris/ Henryi clematis cuttings/ect.
Thanks,
Teresa
