Novice Datura Grower Question...

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

Hello All.

I grew several different Daturas this year with stunning success. There were (and still are) beautiful. I know they self-seed in my area. However, do the seeds require the cold treatment of being on the ground over the winter, or can I just bring the mature seeds inside now and store them in a cool, dry place until spring? I'm guessing the latter, but I just want to be sure. I would appreciate any advice you talented folks could provide.

I kept mine in the food cripser of the fridge last winter and planted them in the spring with amazing success.....also grew some seedlings in February thinking I'd have baby plants come Spring. The seeds planted out directly did better than the seedlings (don't know why really).
Aren't they a fun plant to grow? Loved mine this year....I do believe I'm hooked. :-)

Thank you, Marc, for the great advice. I'll take it! They are indeed amazing plants. I can't believe how quickly they grew from seed and produced huge plants with tons of buds. I've had twelve large white flowers blooming on one plant during one night! Next year I hope to try some of the different varieties, e.g. yellow, swirl, etc. if I can find the seeds.

Thanks again,

Erick

Oh lord Erick...send me your address and I'll send you some of the blk current swirl, and some dbl and single purples if you like. These puppies really put out the seeds.

Marc

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

How very kind of you Marc. You've made my day! I believe I just successfully sent you an e-mail.

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

It was nothing I assure you......wasn't sure what I was gonna do with all the seeds I've saved, so your actually doing ME a favor :-)
Each flower produces a seed pod, and each pod contains hundreds of seeds......very prolific plants these datura.
I'll responde to your email and get these seeds off shortly.

I'm delighted to assist you:-) Thank you again!

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

:-) hehehehehehe

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I live in a warm climate and did not cold stratify mine. I got 99% germination on multiple varieties. I think they grow in any condition given them LOL! Just wanted to add that its not necessary. I stored mine in my closet before I planted them.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

i would like to get them started to do you have extra seeds colors trade for ????

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

I have single large white, dbl purple, single purple I can send you Hope43......send me an email with your address and I'll get you some in the mail.

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

Erick

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Your more than welcome Erick.....and thank you for the lovely 'Thank You' card and the overpayment of postage :-)
I hoep your gardens are as gorgeous as you hope for next Spring. :-)

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Okay Erick, so now how would you like a Brugmansia cutting? Or maybe a seedling or two?

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Oooh! Take the seedlings Erick! You will get something no one has! Plus Marc has done the hard part already. Are these already your crosses Marc? WOW! Who are the parents?

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

No not my crosses....yet. These are crosses I recieved in seed trade last winter. If memory serves these are Rosamond and EP (Ecuador Pink) crosses from SpringSong.

Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Those should be just beautiful! I was going to start calling you mighty mouse!!!

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Me mighty mouse...oh no, just busy fingers and to much time on my hands at the computer :-)

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

How could I refuse such a kind and generous offer? I just about fell off my chair when I saw it this morning. I would be honored (and THRILLED!) to get a Brug cutting or seedling from you Marc. Perhaps I should take Shelly's good advice and humbly and respectfully express a preference for a seedling? Of course, I will be grateful for whatever you choose to send. I have a lot to learn about Brugs and can hardly wait to start!

Thank you, Shelly, for contributing to the joy of this offer. You both have made my day, week and month!

Erick

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Once again Erick it is you who do me the favor....this means I have one less to try and over winter in the house. hehehehehehe
I'll do my best to get it (they) out the first part of next week......don't want to risk them sitting in some cold post office over the weekend.

Marc

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

That sounds great Marc. Thank you again. I'll do "favors" like this for you anytime!

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

I have two babies all picked out and repotted for you Erick.....the cuttings I'll be taking in the early part of October, so will send those along later. I should be getting the seedlings out to you on Monday, so you should have them by next Wednesday I would assume.

Hope43, did you still want some dat seeds?

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

Thank you Marc. I will watch for them! Next Wednesday can't get here soon enough...

Erick

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Your not anxious or anything are you Erick??? LOL

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

Noooooooo, not at all...I swear I didn't check on the availabilty of flights to Seattle tonight to come and pick them up ($798 round-trip, flight departs Minnepolis at 8:05 PM, two seats available, limited meal service)....

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh my :-) I'll chill a bottle of wine, and we'll pick you both up at SeaTac....call when you land. LOL

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

If only it were true! We'd promise to be respectful and entertaining guests, and NOT be sneaking around your gardens in the middle of the night taking cuttings of everything in sight...(You don't have an outside dog, right?).

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

:-) Erick I'll personally hand you the pruners and show you where to cut. Would save me from doing it all myself.....oh and the doggy is a ferocious basset hound guarenteed to lick you to death. (Beverly)
When does your flight get in????

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

Not soon enough! I'm sure we'd get along with Beverly just fine. We'll bring her a host gift from our Yorkies!

I won't have access to e-mail again until Monday, unfortunately. Have a good weekend, and give our best to everyone in your household.

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Have a mrvy weekend Erick, and all our best to you and yours :-)

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Your Brug seedlings went out this AM priority mail. I sent ya 4 of the larger seedlings....'larger' being a tad exaggerated as they are only about 6 to 8 inches tall.
Let me know when they arrive and in what condition.....I have never shipped Brug babies before.
I will send the cuttings next month after they finish blooming and I am sure of color.

Marc,
Do you think I could have some of those double purple seeds? I have seeds of a few ordinary things that you might like.
Terrie

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

I'll see what I have left when I get in this evening and will let ya know. :-)

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks. I'll email you with what I have.

Hello Marc.

That's great news! How very generous of you. We can't thank you enough. I'll let you know as soon as they arrive.

Have a good week.

Erick

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

No need to thank me Erick....I'm just "paying it forward". These are seedlings grown from seeds generously given me last Winter. You just enjoy them, and pay it forward later down the line. :-)

St. Paul, MN(Zone 4b)

Hello Marc.

The Brug seedlings arrived today in perfect condition! There were three of them, along with a single green bean (presumably a stowaway). I'm just about to get them potted up into one gallon containers. They look great! Thank you again. They've made for a very exciting evening around here (and many evenings to come as well, I'm sure!).

I'll keep you appraised of their progress. Your kindness and generosity are amazing, and sincerely appreciated.

All the best to your household.

Erick

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh my! I was cleaning out the raised bed containing the green beans...wonder what happened to the 4th seedling....musta tossed it out with the trash :(
Anyway glad they got there in good condition. You enjoy them, and by all means keep me posted on how they're doing.
All our best to you and yours as well.
