Ingrid,
don't get anything from Rockwood. They are the worst people. Terrible plants. Never ship on time. Tiny whatevers. You'll be really upset if you order from them.

Ask the other Canadians. They are total crooks.

Inanda, Thank-you for letting me know. There catalog looks really like something. Well, there has to be other places to buy from then.

Oh, Shannon 'Spklatt" hope you read this for I mentioned to you about there catalog.

Thank, So Very Much for letting us know.
Blessings, Ingrid

Oh Inanda, be careful what you say about plants from Rockwood. You never know, the owners could get very upset and come out of Lurkers Cave.

About RockwoodGardens, something I don't understand is why anyone would buy a company like that after it went bankrupt. What's left to buy? Itty bitty dead plants? Bad reputation? I think I would start my own or at least have a different name. But not to get too far down that road......since it is owned and presumabley run by different people, there have been more possitive comments in the watchdog. It may be safe to try a small order to see what you get. Unless someone has ordered recently?

Actually, I think it is excellent that we can express and notify on different situations regarding any business transactions with different nuseries. For myself, I would of not been for the wiser if no-one would of mentioned they 'Rockwood' had gone bankrupt let alone the plant state of receiving. There are many bankrupt situations where they just go under a 'new -management 'tile but in actually nothing has changed only legal taging same intial owner.

Who knows, maybe things have changed and everything is on the up &up. Hoping the best for them.

Best Regards, Ingrid

My Dear Echoes,

I wouldn't mind one little tiny petite bit if anyone I badmounth comes out of their Lurkers Cave. hmm........ Rockwood can take me to court any time they want .

Because what I say is TRUE!!!!!!!!!

I got a couple of things this year from a nursery in Ont that died. When the nursery was informed, they said they were unable to replace or did I want you refund or they will be able to reship next year. I suggested reshipping next year would be fine. It was something I really wanted, haven't been ableto find anywhere else and NO, I will not say who they are.

A couple of years ago a bunch of us from Manitoba (I was living in Victoria at the time but joined the trip anyway) visited nurseries/RBG etc in Ont.
This particular nursery was one we visited. They had laid out a totally unexpected lunch for us and treated us like honoured guests. So when they say they cannot replace a dead whatever, I'm perfectly willing to wait and in fact have ordered from them again this summer.

Haven't been to the gardenwatchdog for awhile. Think I'll hop over and see if there's anything there about Rockwood.

Inanda - going to get changed and check out the soggy garden.

My Grandmother used to order from Rockwood.......but never very much. Her plants were always very, very tiny and eventually my Aunt starting hiding the catalog.

Well, I know who it isn't.

What I was referring to was in an earlier thread that was just us gardeners chit chatting about plants. Some disappointment was mentioned in passing, and the owner of the company mentioned jumped in and killed the thread with her 'story'. You just have to leave these things alone unless you want to start a big argument on-line, which is not something most of us want to do. It may be entertaining to read, but very upsetting for some. I prefer to laugh it off and get on with my gardening. Can't you just see Home Depot or Botanus jumping in here and protesting.

So I must admit, I wasn't being serious about Rockwood. And I know you could take them on Inanda.

Well, I must say that exploring the sites was wonderful, especially at this time of year. Feels like Spring! Thank you all.

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 2b)

Juststop yes STOP mentioning Botanus. Catalogue is right here beside me. But No. I will not order right now. Passersby pick all my bulbs anyway, so not this year. Maybe will go visit costco one of these days.

Love your ploy about hiding the Rockwood catalogue Lilypon.. My kids used to do that to me, till I told them that it was illegal to fiddle with other peoples mail.

Don't get as many catalogues as I used to get, anyway. Love being able to search for a plant on line.

My only prob. with home despot is that they don't water enuff. - often

Out to garden now.

Just came across this thread..
Welcome Ingrid.

Here is what I do...
I go to the garden centres this time of year and usually they have a lot of plants marked way down...you know the old saying in gardening.."there is always next year"
Just this past week I purchased an Anabelle Hydrangea..(small one) for $5.00
Recently I got four Hosta for only $2.00 each. Now they are small..but I am sure when they come back next year they will be bigger.

Yesterday I got three plants for only $1.00 each...a Magnus coneflower...
a small Sedum and a White Gaura "Bride"..by the way the man told me to mulch it this winter for protection..
I had bought a Gaura Pink Fountains one this spring and enjoyed it..so it was a good tip as I wouldn't have known to mulch.

Cheers,
Carol

You're welcome!

Was just referred to this thread on another list. Just want to say that I'm a great Budd's customer. But I live Beacon Hill way and generally go to their Innes Rd. store. If you ever get a chance to see their own hosta garden (and Don Budd takes people there often), go. I understand it was greatly expanded this fall.

Wow. This thread keeps coming back. Was a mystery to me because I last posted almost a year ago. Was looking at the September dates but not noticing the year.

Anyway, some more comment is due.

Several of us nearly took part in a Hosta co-op until we really did our homework. By the time we got all the paperwork done, and considered what brokerage fees would cost (the whole thing wouldn't be worthwhile unless we bought a lot, but then it would involve expensive brokerage fees), we decided we were better off ordering from local merchants. So, even if you are allowed to participate in any of the American co-ops, it is unlikely that you will save money.

Secondly, while I purchase most of my hostas from Budd, they are not really set up for mail order. Don Budd told me that he occasionaly send plants to people more as a favour than as a regular part of his business. I may be wrong, but I doubt that he would really want to get involved in sending out large quantities.

Thirdly, we are all so spread out that the costs of getting the plants from whomever receives them to all the other people who buy into a co-op is likely to negate any savings you have.

In regard to my comment of a year ago, there is a current thread in the Hosta Forum "Giant Hosta Land" which has many pics of Don Budd's back yard hosta garden. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/639312/

What I think is most valuable is sharing our experiences with various mail-order places in Canada. For instance, I have received lovely Hostas this year from both Hosta Choice and Floral and hardy nursery.
