Sunsmile Mix Japanese Morning Glories from Burpee

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

Wanted to post this here to see if anyone else is growing this mix and if they are getting the same type of blooms:
Each vine is separated so I can pick accurate seeds from them.

deller, when the flower is gone, on that same "stem" there is going to grow the seedpod, wait until it is dry, it will be either round our teardrop shaped (depending upon kind you are growing) but wait till that pod turns brown, then you pick them off and take seed from the pod, let dry on plate or somewhere for a day or two, then packet up, if you just pick and pack, sometimes there is still moisture either in seed or pod and they will mold or get yucky, so make sure you have them dry before you store them. There is a thread I found where someone else had asked this, will see if I can find it quickly. Here it is: shows pictures too :) http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/452840/, if you have any more questions, we will be happy to help ya out!!

Your shots of them are fantastic...I absolutely love them all.

Beautiful glories. I've seen so many pretty ones from this mix that I've just got to purchase some of these next year.

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

Thanks all, but I am still curious if anyone else did grow them this year???? Anyone out there?

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes I did, and I got some of the ones you are showing. I don't know how many others I would have had since this was the bed the Armadillos damaged so badly. I did keep the pink and had several of the dark blue purple blooms. This package of seed is hard to come by and if you have some of these seeds you really need to Share.........hint, hint......LOL....
I got mine at Wal-Mart and they only had them for a little while, I wished now I would have bought more of them since there are so many of the named Japanese Morning Glories in this mix.....That is what I think most of the different mix packets are, over runs when they are filling packets, and when they sweep up after filling, etc so there is not telling what you will get.
I know Moon recognizes this mix, it is the one we are waiting for Wal-Mart to get in again. Burpee Seeds was the distributor........ Wal-Mart stopped selling the seed in April and said they wouldn't have anymore until next season, so here we are almost at the next season....Christmas stuff is already out so spring seeds should be tooo.....right........

thanks laurrie...
some of the blooms have closed and looked
very wilted, so now I just wait for them
to turn brown?
deller

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

Deller ~ Ok the wilted flower that closed, that part of the flower will drop off, then round seed pods will start forming right in there where the flower has dropped from, then they will turn brown, they will hang down in "clusters" if you keep watching you will notice and know what I mean, if you have more questions, I am always happy to help out!!! Just ask!
Have a wonderful holiday weekend!!
Laurrie

Thanks Dee, for the info, Walmart your way is ahead of us, no doubt because your growing season probably starts earlier than ours does here LOL
I plan on keeping them seperate as much as I can (the vines) so this way I can make the mix again, or share certain kinds alone.

Laurrie - We are growing a batch that we received from Burpee this year..... They seem to be various shades of multicolor varieties with some tye dye and some bi-colored shades of red, white, pink and purple. We even had one that was as big as a dinner plate, but it fell apart before a good photo was taken. It was almost as big as moonflower! But all the plants developed the typical Ipomoea nil ivy shaped leaves with most verigated, but unlike you we didn't keep ours separated.....great work on your part. We also grew the Mt. Fuji mix from Burpee. We've harvested tons of seeds for both this year, yipee... but alas they are mixed so we will be offering them as a mixed I. nil selection on our web site come this fall.

Oh that is a lovely one! pretty deep in color too. I didn't start with separating them, at first they were only going to be left alone, but when the first blooms started poppin open, I thought, hey those are sure pretty, I know some people probably would love to have some of this or that - so...... i unwound the vines and tied them each to their own spot and tagged them with photo (address label) with photo printed on it so I would know when picking time comes which was which. Thanks for the info, glad to know you are getting about what I got, and I think that is probably how they do it, take the excess seeds and sell them that way!!

Franklin, WI(Zone 5a)

I've grown the Sunrise Mix in previous years but have never been able to collect seed. Sadly, I've never been able to collect seed from any of the Japanese varieities because frost usually hits before they fully ripen. I planted some of the Sunrise this year but still haven't seen them bloom. It's getting cold here at night and I think its really setting the plants back. Except for the Kaori the blooms I typically saw were different than what you're posting. They've probably changed the mix in the last five years or so. Regardless, they're always beautiful!

Beautiful.

thanks for the info, I like to keep track of what's in a mix :) And Sandy, you are probably right, they do seem to change the "mix"

Ohio I just love your pics - am saving all of them for future ref. Hope you don't mind!!! MG's are gorgeous!!!! I tried a Hatsu but it got eaten by rabbits. Going to try again next year! Moonflowers doing great though.
