The big stinky--don't do this!!!

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

I read one time in one of my gardening books that when you boil corn use the water(after it cools) to water your houseplants. Good nutrients for your plants. I've always done that since. Well, the other night I steamed some broccoli and the water was nice and green, fresh broccoli from out the garden water. So "why not" I thought. After the water cooled I watered my plant with it. Now it is 2 days later and boy does it stink in here!!! P.U. Don't do this....duhhh, Bye, Lisa

Don't use that deodorized fish fertilizer indoors either. It isn't that deodorized! Your cat will love it and try to find the fish. Very messy and a great excuse to repot all your houseplants. I do use vegie water on outdoor plants but only if I have not salted the water. Lisa, I wouldn't try cabbage water either, but carrot would be nice I think. This reminds me of something that happened when we lived in Alaska. A neighbor just through the trees told us a bear had wrecked his greenhouse because he was using fish fertilizer (the kind you delute with about 1 tbsp of concentrate to 1 gallon of water) on his vegie plants. Bears do come in handy sometimes if you want your garden rototilled just bury some fish cleanings in several places and the bears will do the rest. Unfortunately this sometimes makes the bears mad when they don't find enough fish, or want more the next day and then they will also go after your garbage can and come into your house. An Alaska joke is "What do you call a bear in your garden? A rototiller!"

Best I've found...have your friends with fish tanks save the water they when they clean the tanks.let site outdoors for atleast two days.add just a touch of tea(reg.NO SUGAR)the tea seems to help distroy the smell. Then water your indoor plants.
Try it...

Reminds me of the time I saw that baking dirt in your oven would kill all the old seeds and pest. OMG, my house stunk so bad for days... we slept outside on the porch... thank goodness it was summer!

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

I too have heard of baking dirt and that it stinks! I know I will not be trying that anytime soon! Bye, Lisa

I'm going to be baking some dirt this spring, but the good news is that we have two houses, so I'll just stink up my garden house and the main house will be safe. :-)

Just wondering if microwaving would do the same job without the smell. Have heard of women micro-ing their panties...why not dirt?
Anyone?

(LOL) Oh my.... can't say as I've ever nuked my undies... (giggling) how interesting!

As for the microwave, I wouldn't suggest it unless you get a small microwave that is especially for that. And also, if your pile o'dirt has some little pieces of metal in it, that wouldn't be good a'tall...

nuked undies... heheheh

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Best laugh I've had all day. Nuked undies, sheeeesh, what next?

Kennedy, NY(Zone 4a)

oh... there's the maxi pads in the Hanging Plants thread... :)

Yes Nuking undies. It happens. Supposed to get rid of bacteria. Personally I think if you have to nuke your panties perhaps you should consult your GYN.

Hhahahahaaha... oh man...

Nepthys,

Assuming the dirt was in a microwaveable container, small bits of metal will not hurt anything. The metal has to touch the walls of the unit for their to be a reaction. If they are separated from the walls, or insulated (like the metal shelf that came in our first nuke), it is perfectly safe.

So far as nuking undies.....hmmmmm.

Reminds me of the thread on another list. We were discussing growing melons vertically. When you do that, each melon has to be supported individually, or there's a danger of pulling the whole shebang down. One woman suggested using old bras.

I suggested that either she grew rather small melons, or that the women in her town must really be sumpin' else.

ROFL... oh man... this thread is getting to be too much... I can just imagine a pair of melons in a bra... and I better shut up now... hehehe

The panties in the microwave, wet cotton panties, to hot for the synethic fabrics, supposely the high heat and moisture kill the yeast infection germ that normal washing with hot water and bleach well not kill.
I bake my dirt for seed starting, and it does have a ordor, but I am bakeing dirt so what should I expect.Well worth the ordor which doesn't last that long.
